What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): the voting stuff was a little abstract. Many folks were pretty new, and hadn’t really warmed up to the technique yet. It was definitely helpful to have three seasoned learners there.. it’s interesting, because it’s practically a totally new class. Could have used a little shuffling of learners. One learner was pretty frustrated, but I heard he came back, so we’re doing ok. They asked if I was politicising them, but I was just saying, hey, this isn’t my opinion, just what is happening.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): report posted very late. all 6 of the learners showed up, and it was very nice to see them, and I can really see improvement, it’s very validating to see, incredible really. we worked on the map of the united states.. a kind of phone it in always relevant lesson that gets some stories out of people where they’ve been. one group had driven across the midwest and the south, that was cool to hear. however, it was a little one note, so I knocked off the technique a little bit.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): a little discombobulated, we had everyone at the one big table instead of multiple tables, which was tight, but it worked. one new person. mixed people up a little bit. Melissa is from lents, and she walked around with images of life hacks. lots of dictation, and it grinded at times.. better preparation would have helped. we also sung a little of let it snow, which could have been better prepared too

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Monica was unable to come, so we did a computer class without turning on the computer. We passed around hardware, and it was funny – it looks like folks haven’t been doing the This is A activity, so it was just familiar enough to not choke, but new enough to be funny and last a long time. All assistants were helpful and flexible, willing to take direction. Learners were writing down stuff without being asked, and helping each other that way. We decided to split the English class and the Computer class. Very pleased with a good turnout!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I prepared a lot by writing out a solid lesson plan, which included keyboard practice, wikipedia, using word. We had a long meeting beforehand where I expressed my concerns about an overview model rather than a figure it out as we go along model. There was a strong feeling among all of us that we should try to make it work. The class seemed quite successful today, particularly for the lower skill learners, who really really enjoyed the typing games. One said “more games!” everyone was into it and it made the time go by fast. There was some of the standard challenges.. computers not being configured the same, people going ahead or falling behind. It helped a lot to have a lot of assistants. A brief moment of concern at the end when people didn’t know ahat to look for in Wikipedia, and I had them look up their hometowns in a flash of inspiration, and this was very successful.. one learner expressing delight at not seeing images of her hometown in more than 20 years… then she cracked a joke which made everyone laugh, and that was it – that class is a community! Next week will be more of an explanatory space and I won’t be there, and they’ll try to see if they want the blended class idea or not.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class was surprisingly large – it’s gone up every monday night, which is validating, and interesting. It’s our 5 week of class, so that’s a good sign that the program will survive. Interesting that there was only one for the daytime. It’s a challenging week, with days off, day after time change, etc. Sean and Sofia were very gracious, I had to make a lot of interventions.. but we used a best buy circular, found out most folks had bought their computers at best buy, but sofia, sean, and I all had bought our last computers online.. very interesting difference! We worked with the keyboard as an alphabet listen and point, but it was a little difficult to see. Given that it’s going well, we’ll need to make sure that our next class gives everyone something that they want, both with computer practice and language practice and level differentiation. Definitely a difficult challenge. We had 3 new people, one who spoke English really well, another that I knew from community work, and another brought by one of the learners. Definitely interesting, and successful, but we’re flying a little without direction, so we’ll see if we can keep the energy through mid December.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): at first thought nobody would show, but had a small group of folks, very nice to connect with them. A lot of the group was in Spanish, we talked about bad words, caribbean vs mexican spanish, we talked about dressing up as, costumes, and played the halloween etymology video. this time, I played it, and interpreted it rather than dictated. It worked, and kind of blew their minds to know that hallows = saints / holy. we also talked about honking horns and don’t touch me, don’t yell at me, leave me alone
