What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): small group, relatively high skill level. Lots of dictation and repeat, letting learners then tell their own story a little bit. Was feeling a little sticky, and not sure if it was working, but a good sign was the learners were speaking after class when I left for quite a while! They are drivers, so the hop pass wasn’t as relevant. We then moved to indigenous people’s day, and I couldn’t find a good video. If they come back, we’ll be able to ramp it up for them. We could have just had a conversation really.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Class #3 at this location. Patrik brought lots of different types of apples which were passed around the group to try. This made it really fun for the learners. There were a lot of children that attended with their moms but there was a teenager there who took care of them pretty well. The children actually outnumbered the learners, but it went fine. Learners seemed really engaged and I think they enjoyed the class very much.October 16, 2017 at 3:39 pm #9328Mark GriffinSpectatorLesson Title: ticket to ride

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
First two learners arrived about 10-15 minutes late. Fun tangible lesson! The third learner arrived around 30-40 minutes late and struggled a little bit trying to keep up, as the lesson was well on its way. Since the staff outnumbered the learners we were able to provide a little more one on one attention to assist the slowest learner. Alisa brought in some homemade apple cider as the culminating part of her lesson. It was DELICIOUS!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a complicated class that turned out pretty well. Our largest group yet, for one thing. lots of kids, but we had child care which was great. They all said they liked the ESL class, and didn’t need the computer class to be there, which was cool… but felt weird about it. Lots of requests for the hop pass!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Monica and I spoke for quite a while before the class, and were able to come to a collaboration which worked out better than it could have! everyone touched and turned on their computers, we practiced keyboarding.. there were some level differences and some expectations that may have been a little underwhelming, but tried to make sure everyone was challenged with the keyboard. Everyone was helpful, but Ailis and Sean were really great to be with us. We will continue this throughout the year, and there’s an opportunity to build a really cool curriculum out of it (I guess I’ll be around on Mondays for a while!)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had only one student today. Fedora called a number of students and learned that the lack of attendance appears to be related to busy schedules and the fact that the school schedule is fractured for the week and the month.
We should discuss the student to assistant ratio. We had a DJ and MC today as well as an assistant (Patricia). Two other assistants (both of whom do other volunteer work at the school) did not stay for class, per agreement by all. In most of our class we have had 4-5 students and 5 DJ/MC/ assistants. That ratio may be overbearing or intimidating to the students and may be counterproductive.
Note that because there was only one student, we deviated from the curriculum but concentrated on the alphabet and chorale response.November 8, 2017 at 12:23 pm #9410KilpatrickRelentlessListenerKeymasterLesson Title: Looking for a New Computer

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class was surprisingly large – it’s gone up every monday night, which is validating, and interesting. It’s our 5 week of class, so that’s a good sign that the program will survive. Interesting that there was only one for the daytime. It’s a challenging week, with days off, day after time change, etc. Sean and Sofia were very gracious, I had to make a lot of interventions.. but we used a best buy circular, found out most folks had bought their computers at best buy, but sofia, sean, and I all had bought our last computers online.. very interesting difference! We worked with the keyboard as an alphabet listen and point, but it was a little difficult to see. Given that it’s going well, we’ll need to make sure that our next class gives everyone something that they want, both with computer practice and language practice and level differentiation. Definitely a difficult challenge. We had 3 new people, one who spoke English really well, another that I knew from community work, and another brought by one of the learners. Definitely interesting, and successful, but we’re flying a little without direction, so we’ll see if we can keep the energy through mid December.
