What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was super chatty, which I liked because these wonderful learners haven’t seen each other in a while and they wanted to catch up. I dictated several sentences about food–one food for each color in the rainbow. Not absolutely sure all of the learners got the connection; some were translating RAINBOW on their phones are were confused about how we were going to eat this meteorological phenomenon. There were two new learners assisted by a volunteer with Lutheran Charities. Hopefully, they were not too overwhelmed and will visit again. Class moved a little slowly due to the very low level of one of the newcomers, but everyone helped one another and the class was extremely communal and positive.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was filled with new learners. I don’t think they were used to doing choral responses; the first couple attempts fell flat, then got much better after a few rounds of practice. We did a Round Robin asking “have you ever eaten a winter squash?”, a This is… with a winter squash, Sentence Dictations about squash, and a Document Search comparing various types of squash. It looked like most people did not know each other previously, but were bonding near the end. They also seemed excited to come back, taking pamphlets with them that showed the class and other library event schedules.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Sara’s dress rehearsal went very, very well! One of our learners showed up 15 minutes early, and had a big presence – she asked us to put the two long tables together length wise, which I wasn’t a fan of, but we ended up getting a dozen learners plus two kids, and they exactly fit around the table.

This group clearly knows each other well; there was lots of banter and laughter throughout the lesson. We hit a couple of small snags – none of us knew where the cloth Oregon maps were, but Sara found them later, and she also kindly allowed me to model choral response for her once, which I asked to do after I noticed her rushing through once of the sentences she had dictated. Afterwards, everything went very smoothly!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had a medium-sized group today. Only one or two learners may have been new– the rest appeared comfortable with the activities and one another. This lead to lots of working together and asking questions. It was great!

An opportunity for improvement next week is being mindful of where learners are sitting and redirecting them as needed to better facilitate peer exchange and activity flow.

A highlight from today is that students were interested in the topic– It seems like they felt it was relevant. For example, towards the end of class we had a group conversation about where people could go to vote on Tuesday (initiated by a student question).

Overall, a productive and fun day of learning English!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): First off, Amy did a fantastic job with her dress rehearsal. She was loud and proud and poised. Even though she forgot a few small things, learners were kept on their toes and seemed to enjoy talking about the squash recipe. A few new learners came to the class late, so introductions had to be partially redone. Amy was quick to do a short yell and spell to make sure the new learners were welcomed, edited her longer sentences while gauging the competency of her median learner on the fly and remained upbeat and poised. She also worked one-on-one with a few very low level learners while keeping track of how far along most learners were with their sentences. Two enthusiastic thumbs up for Amy’s dress rehearsal!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today was Oregon Cities and Towns based on a previous lesson on counties. There were 4 new people and new loyalty cards were created for them. Several people came in late, after “Names: Yell and Spell”. Everyone was very helpful to the new people. There wasn’t quite enough material to cover the time on the lesson plan, but the MC and DJ came up with enough content based on the original lesson plan to fill the lesson (a couple of dictations and a couple round robins). After the lesson, Amy and Herb discussed the class and completed the self-evaluation. They called Jake to get some help on how to do attendance, he was super helpful. Amy and Herb figured out how to do the attendance codes. Amy completed the Past Tense journal at the library but had to ask Santiago about Guild Level, so she completed Attendance at home.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): the voting stuff was a little abstract. Many folks were pretty new, and hadn’t really warmed up to the technique yet. It was definitely helpful to have three seasoned learners there.. it’s interesting, because it’s practically a totally new class. Could have used a little shuffling of learners. One learner was pretty frustrated, but I heard he came back, so we’re doing ok. They asked if I was politicising them, but I was just saying, hey, this isn’t my opinion, just what is happening.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started the lesson with few learners, and began with the alphabet. More learners joined as the lesson went on, with us eventually having a total attendance of 13. We did yell and spell with names, and then wrote the title of the day’s lesson, segueing into learning about rights with a simple listen and point. Sara introduced the Know Your Rights Cards, and we did dictations with phrases on the cards. Because we ended up having to do a lot of improvisation (the learners were higher-level today and we went through material quickly), the learners themselves offered a lot of extra support toward each other, such as offering corrections or pointing someone to the right phrase. We practiced asking questions with the learners responding with what they’d learned, and finished off the lesson with pointing toward directions.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was really big–18 learners! And May did a great job with keeping her poise, projecting her voice and pacing the class. We dictated sentences having to do with medical history–some sentences were tricky and learners all helped each other. There was a large disparity between levels. May played a video and dictated sentences we heard on the video. One of the speakers is broken, so the video was barely audible and there might not have been a connection between the video and the subsequent dictated sentences. Maybe we should replace the speakers or come up with a better way to use media. May did a great job having each learner repeat the letter combinations–she seemed like a seasoned teacher! After class, we had a meaningful and productive chat about ways to improve the class. it was a fun and lively class and we had a lot of giggles when we used the word “hemorrhoids.” :)
