What happened: We did the pest survey/questionnaire that Patrik/Jacob created for the Oregon State University project. I had supporting images, and we dictated the questions and I tallied answers on the board. I’d say they understood at least the majority of them but not all. Also, due to the levels of the 2 learners, we did not quite finish it but we got close! I could tell at least one of them was pretty interested in the content, and the other seemed to be a little lost but we did our best!

What happened: We did the pest survey/questionnaire in this class as well. This group already did the survey but this time it was modified to work better with our learners. Since they already answered all the questions, I didn’t dictate all of them. They took turns reading questions, and I felt like they all comprehended at least the majority. . we had a good 20 minutes left so we played a card game speaking activity that was really fun!

What happened: We started with a short dialogue related to the cold winter weather, Then we did some very focused pronunciation with minimal pairs. This proved to be excellent practice particularly for the somewhat newer learner who’s native language is Vietnamese. She can comprehend and write English very well but her pronunciation of certain sounds makes it very difficult to understand her; I pushed her a lot today but it paid off! There was even a moment where she was having a very hard time pronouncing watch and wash and when I showed her how to use her tongue to pronounce these words, she finally got it and pronounced them almost perfectly. We all cheered and she was oh so delighted to finally get it! It was very sweet ☺

We also practiced pronunciation with minimal pairs and it also proved to be excellent practice for this group. Everyones mouth was tired by the end that’s for sure! We reviewed some winter clothing vocabulary and did some fun memory/listen find type activities with them.. we ended with conversation practice with the cards from last weeks class. Heather came at the end to talk about the next session and we should have that finalized next week!

Next we did a cloze activity about the winter solstice and learners practiced reading/pronunciation by taking turns reading the script with my guidance. Lastly we explored some images and made past tense sentences using the vocabulary (Did you wrap the presents? Did you fill the stockings with gifts?, etc…) Lastly, we finalized the plan for the next session and wished each other happy holidays!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner today, and she was quite late so we didn’t get through much.. still a great class though! We started with a short title about the Flu and asked eachother questions like; ‘Have you ever had the flu and did you get a flu shot this year’. We did a document search that had information about the flu, sort of a guide for parents with a lot of useful information. Next (and last) we reviewed body parts. Since it was just the one woman and I, she took the opportunity to ask me about the vocabulary/pronunciation for all the ‘private’ parts. I’m glad she did this because they are also important words to know and certainly aren’t on any of the ‘body part’ handouts you find on line! She also wanted to know about menopause and estrogen pills so we looked online for something that might work for her. But I also told her to talk to her doctor as I don’t know for sure what she needs :)

We started with the short title about the flu and asked eachother the questions; ‘Have you ever had the flu and did you get a flu shot this year’. One learner was confused about contagious vs. infectious so we practiced a dialogue with the word contagious and talked about the similarity between the words. We quickly reviewed body parts and then learned about other illnesses and their corresponding symptoms and did more dialogue surrounding this topic.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Both learners were a bit late so we only had about an hour total together (they always leave a little early so they have a few minute break before their shift, too). Fun class regardless! We started with a quick dialogue to introduce the topic; Have you ever been hospitalized? I gave an example and then the first learner talked about her experiences in the hospital. The 2nd learner came at the tail end of this activity, so we didn’t hear from her but she got caught up on the topic. It was so great that learner 1 had talked about going to the hospital for appendicitis since one of the activities I had planned was a dialogue between a doctor and patient about this very topic! So although I had planned to do this last, of course, I had to transition into it right then. In this activity, they listened to a dialogue and read along with a transcript. The 2nd time around, they filled in the missing words from the dialogue via a cloze activity. Next, they listened again and lastly, they practiced with eachother. They loved it! For the last activity, we learned vocab words associated with the hospital but didn’t get to dictate sentences to go along with each word. Alas, we will start there next week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): As I entered back into the room as class was about to start, I noticed that almost everyone had a document out from last week that had vocabulary/dialogue practice related to describing symptoms for basic illnesses/injuries like a broken arm, a rash, the flu, etc.. So although I wasn’t planning to go back to this, I went ahead and started class with a mini review. We then moved into the question ‘have you ever been hospitalized?’. This brought out some interesting conversation! I learned that most learners were hospitalized for at least one c-section; one for removal of a thyroid and one for malaria when she was a young girl. From that discussion, I learned that one of the learners had a brother that passed away from malaria almost 35 years ago. Wow!! I had no idea that this question would reveal such personal and powerful information. However, in assuming that this might be a touchy subject, before we even started to practice the question, I made it clear that no one had to share what they were hospitalized for, if they were. I said ‘ you can just answer Yes, I have or No, I haven’t, but everyone wanted to share. Clearly, this is a tight knit group and they have been friends/classmates/co-workers for many many years :) Next, we learned hospital related vocabulary; they loved talking about midwives and had no idea that many women in Portland still prefer a home birth vs a hospital birth (They thought this was a thing of the past, or something that only happened in rural communities, or developing countries). Good stuff! We ended with listening to the dialogue about the patient with appendicitis. I think they are very interested in this theme and I’m looking forward to delving in deeper next week :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 1 learner today, and she was about 20 minutes late so we didn’t have a lot of time to do much. Also, I learned that the most consistent learner, J, won’t be able to come to the classes for a while- something family related and I know it’s something she has no control over (she pretty much came almost every class last year). So, it’s a bummer but we’ll see, maybe she can come back soon.
Since it’s been a hot topic the past few days, I had an activity planned about the super blue blood moon that occurred last night. But since this learner was late, and her level is pretty low, I stuck with hospital related stuff. We reviewed a little from last week and I learned that she actually had dengue fever twice when she was a young girl. She said she almost died one of the times, but thankfully, was able to pull through!! Yikes, how scary for her mother! After that, I dictated descriptions of the new vocabulary that we learned and she wrote them down, then we practiced saying them. To end class, I did a fun listen/find with the images.

Most learners had at least heard of it but none actually saw it because it was cloudy. We did a cloze activity to delve a little deeper into the topic then practiced pronunciation/speaking via the text. We then reviewed dialogue from last week and practiced the hospital vocabulary via ‘this is an apple activity’ which was super fun(ny). For the last 10 minutes or so, we reviewed with a listen/find using the images where I really got to test their memories’. At the end of class, one of the learners gave me a lovely scarf from Thailand… very sweet!
