What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Benjamin’s final exam, so Patrik was here to play his role in that process. Congrats to Ben. It was also the first class at Irvington after having classes all summer at St. Andrews. So nice to have so many learners show up even though the location changed.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Our first Thursday back at Irvington and we had nine learners. 9 LEARNERS!!! This was due in part to a very successful summer and both Rosa and Aurelia’s efforts. Everyone seemed a little off, most likely due to the pull of the harvest moon and the loss of light as we move further into fall. Despite slightly less engagement from learners, we generally always have connection between the learners, who are excellent at supporting not only one another, but the new learners coming in. Llizzy was amazing and reached out to a Spanish-speaking friend, who helped her craft a message, addressing the recent natural disasters in Florida, Texas, Mexico and the Caribbean as well as the hope that if any of our learners had family directly affected that they were ok. This was a great way to ground the group in the subject matter and current events, before jumping into the lesson and drove home the importance of having a very basic kit (water, food, flashlight, batteries, first aid, etc) ready in the event we were to experience one here in Portland. Excellent job, Lizzy!!!

Learners were well engaged with class that focused on dialogue, utilizatiing Keli’s masterful props for earthquake disaster kits. Cohesive group, very supportive of each other. Adorable, wiggly 5 year old helped keep the class lively.October 19, 2017 at 7:53 am #9348WebMaestrexKeymasterLesson Title: My Housing Story

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): nice group, it’s great that the class has grown.. it started off pretty solid, but got a little flat.. santi suggested that it was going into the dictation again. Jota noticed that I prevented two learners from coaching, stepping in front of them. Engagement was a little weaker than I’d have liked. This group may be ready for more creative production.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Very small class. A few learners showed up by 6:15 and we got going. Lots of opportunity for both dialogue, practice and dictation. I really appreciated the way Lizzy expanded upon the 211 service and how many different types of information can be accessed in many languages. It was wonderful to have May in the class. She was very engaged and participated wonderfully, but I fear she may have left with more of a ‘learner’ experience as opposed to a ‘shadower’ experience, if that can be a thing? One learner in particular really pushed himself this evening; I could see that he made a concerted effort to work out the dictation on his own. Very inspiring!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Jota facilitated an awesome space – we made the groups be real estate agents, and they picked secret identities. the groups ended up splitting off and trying to sell each other their houses. It was impressive and engaging show for someone who had only met a group once!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): at first thought nobody would show, but had a small group of folks, very nice to connect with them. A lot of the group was in Spanish, we talked about bad words, caribbean vs mexican spanish, we talked about dressing up as, costumes, and played the halloween etymology video. this time, I played it, and interpreted it rather than dictated. It worked, and kind of blew their minds to know that hallows = saints / holy. we also talked about honking horns and don’t touch me, don’t yell at me, leave me alone

I enjoyed this class a lot! Keli did a great job repurposing the materials she brought; at the end of class, we wrote down 6 steps to voting (fill out your ballot, put it in the secrecy sleeve, put the sleeve in the envelope, seal the envelope, sign the back of the envelope, take it to the library) and had Ss talk about the steps to each other. Lots of dictation, lots of laughter, great class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Qrysi was a new MC to this group and hooked them right away with a razzle dazzle alphabet point and yell and spell. Her use of simple medical props “this is a pill” really helped to facilitate connection between verbal and written concepts with the learners. This continues to be a well engaged group who”s support of each other is truly heartening.November 15, 2017 at 8:49 pm #9437Jacob GerkeSpectatorLesson Title: OHP

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I assisted Na’ama as she did her dress rehearsal, and it went really well! We actually ran out of things to do about 15 minutes before the end of class, so I advised Na’ama to dictate words from the OHP handout that she prepared, as well as the flow-chart that was prepared by Patrik.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Class began with a learner requesting last names be used in yell and spell to practice as she was recently asked her name iin a medical clinic. This exercise was well received by the group. Focus then shifted to the severe weather of last year and how it affected PPS with school closures. Keli brought in a winter wonderland of props which included a hat, a boot, gloves and a sled. It was a small group very well engaged with each other and in good spirits. Keli’s lesson plan unfolded at a good pace and kept the interest of the group.
