What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today Charlie did an unplanned Gentle Intervention. Patrik did some interrupting early on which threw Charlie off a little, but we both recovered well. The dictation was long – one of the learners said “sometimes the shorter words are harder”. Good feeling in the room and clapping as we finished off with a movement activity embodying spatial prepositions and relationships.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): largeish group, several new folks, a couple people coming in quite late. We ended up having two groups with smaller tables, which was ok, but felt cramped. One learner was pushing and I pushed back firmly and jokingly “why don’t you make one long line, teacher?” Dialogue was very long, and we couldn’t finish it.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Yani did her first silent class, and with not much prep. She visibly changed her technique, getting clearer with her ready signal, and demonstrating what she was wanting. She said that several learners were more engaged than usual. We had a long debrief after class. This class also counts as her final exam.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The largest class we’ve had at Rockwood in quite a while! Super exciting for that reason. The maps stayed on the tables for the entire time, but we barely actually used them, except at the very end. 7 random newcomers came, and the class turned from exploring the language of the water system to how much water do you drink every day.. and then exploration of gallon, pint, ounce, etc. Very nice flow (ha ha) for that reason, but technically a tangent.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We invited the DMA folks to bring food and meet the community. It worked out pretty well.. there were challenges.. two assistants left, and one learner left – she does freqently, but it felt like she wasn’t feeling it that day. But the food was good, and we got the community interested.. it totally worked for our main objective. We did forget to take attendance, so this class is almost a month late in updating, so it gets a 1.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It’s nearly a week since this class happened – and the attendance sheet I wrote on didn’t have the date or the participants, and I can’t really even remember what happened. It wasn’t a great class, but it was big! Barbara and I held it together.

Time of Class: 130-3
MC: Patrik

Assistants: Barbara
Module: Nature in the Neighborhood
How Many Learners: 14
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 5

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We split the class into two groups, which has benefits, but also one thing I don’t like is when the groups are not so equal. Also could have been arranged a little better. But one great thing happened – one of the learners asked for one of our maps! It’s my favorite one showing regional water systems.. the fact that we brought a real world material and one of the learners wanted it.. it’s exactly what we hoped for!
KilpatrickRelentlessListenerKeymasterLesson Title: Follow The Rules
Date of Class: 8/5/15
Day of Class: Wednesday
Time of Class: 130-3
MC: Patrik
DJ: N/A
Assistants: Ivy, Barbara
Module: Nature in the Neighborhood
How Many Learners: 14
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Ran out of Alphabet sheetsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 6
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 3
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 4
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 3
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 27
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty off balance from the beginning.. and it’s the smallest things.. running out of alphabet sheets. The printer jammed up, and we didn’t have enough – this was compounded by lots of new folks and several folks with lower skill levels. I also think that changing the table arrangement also threw people off. One reason why it’s better to mix things up a little bit. But the activity where folks have to remember the words posted to the wall and write them down was fun and got people moving. Barbara and Ivy were great at holding the stability while I wobbled a little.
KilpatrickRelentlessListenerKeymasterLesson Title: Actually In The Park
Date of Class: 7/29/15
Day of Class: Wednesday
Time of Class: 130-3pm
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Ivy, Kim, Barbara, Monica
Module: In the Neighborhood – Gresham Parks
How Many Learners: 7
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): brought new loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 8
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 8
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 8
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 7
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 4Total Score: 41
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We went to the park today.. though there were challenges, it was really fun, the activities went well, and we are definitely getting better at this. It was hot. The bus was there, it was expensive and not air conditioned. Smaller group than we expected, but the kids LOVED it. Realized that if we do this in the context of a single class, the best thing to do is a single exploratory activity.. we could have been fine with just the nature walk, or just the scavenger hunt. Both felt rushed, but they were off and running. Also, we learned that we should put stars on the map, and numbers on the clues.. in any case, every group is different, so mixing around exactly which key information is given, and which isn’t is a way to shift the feeling of the activity. A watershed moment in P-P-T history.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was one of the most high energy connected classes I’ve ever experienced. It’s probably partly the youth, and the activity of group map pointing was great.. but the connectedness continued throughout, they were doing the activities, but then there would be all this talking happening in between. It would have been ideal except a few people were not as engaged with that, so we needed to keep it rolling to make sure everyone was getting something. FASCINATING!
