What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Redid the same lesson from earlier, and it was good.. we got to bring in Kate Brown as well. We had a couple of youth visit, and they were fun and mostly helpful.. Had a conversation with one learner who walked out of class last week, and encouraged her to accept an apology from Jess.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Inspired by my work with another client, I decided to work on the names of senators and representatives. Pronouncing Ron Wyden was difficult! But it was well received and great practice, and it makes me think I’d like to invite an elected into our classroom if we can keep it going forward!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): though the score for this class was pretty low, it was a really nice class in many ways.. just very large, with several new folks at least three of whom were very shy and low skill level. But validating to get such a big group.. we switched to the two islands model, which felt pretty good given the circumstances. Tony did a little better, but still shy. Several new folks really helped out, and that was great. It took me 4 days to post this reflection, hence I’ve forgotten the name of the lesson, and therefore the low number on reflection.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 41
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One of the highest scores I’ve given myself. Large class, though several key people were sadly not there, but folks were super interested in the Owl, Gladys was great, super professional, relaxed, flexible. We also passed around a talon and a claw, that was awesome. Will dig even deeper next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class energy was good. A couple people we were missing last week popped up again, very good to see them. It’s a nice group, we’ve kind of imported about 50% of people are kind of new, I love seeing how the classroom evolves over time.. doesn’t go away, but keeps changing as people decide to move on, and others decide it’s a good place for them for a little while. Assistants were really great.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Our los skill learner is improving rapidly as she figures out what the rules are.. needing to remind our regulars that their modeling is what gives the support. Tony was very gracious.. nervous at first, but fell right into it after a bit of coaching. A learner I haven’t seen in two years came back! But a little awkward yet with a kid in between him and another learner. But I’m happy the mom keeps coming, she’s coming along well too.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): largest group all week, we filled up the tables. The use of the highlighter for the lower skill learner worked very well! An amazing breakthrough, actually, so I bumped up my technique score to a high number. On the other side, my song didn’t work, and my listen and do didn’t work very well either.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Nice size class, one new learner with limited writing skills, and I asked two of our experienced folks to support her, they did well. The material was seen as relevant with the shopping ads, and one learner really worked to expand their fluency by saying.. I didn’t go shopping, but my daughter went shopping. We had two kids, one was hiding. But overall the class was lumpy. I made some choices that weren’t very clear.. do you have Kleenex at home? Also, had I planned my class, I would have been able to make better use of the shopping ads, and avoid some confusion related to brands not being very visible in the shopping ads.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today, I did things out of order, which kind of throws the group off. But.. it’s nice to see the higher skill folks who go to other classes come back to us as they realize that what we have to offer is valuable in a different way “it’s more practical”. Also, a couple of people returned, one who we haven’t seen in almost a year, who has been ill. So good to see her again.. coming back for the community. Doing full names, first and last took longer and almost bogged down, but as we moved into the wordcloud, that was forgotten. And then.. finished the class with Blackbird, a nice version with an older mccartney. People commented on the poetry.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class was surprisingly small today.. and at first, it was just one, then a new person with a very high skill level. I’m sure the parking situation was part of it. But also, some changes I’ve made, such as separating two people or other things might have made a negative impact. Maybe folks are worried we might go on another trip? Not sure. But, a couple of returnees have come several times showed up around 2pm.. we let them know when the time of the class was. Another interesting thing.. one of the Russian speaking librarians has started to create several classes in russian around the ESL class.. it’s really interesting, and indicates the success of our model to draw community members in, and then plug them into other things.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A great day with Judy and Colleen.. they got a really good show, and the table filled up very nicely, though folks had trouble finding parking and there were a couple newcomers and a couple of latecomers creating a little bumpiness.. also the class was a little flat since small talk doesn’t have a lot of visible stuff with it, and some of the long timers were waiting around a lot, but new connections were made, and I chatted at length with the shadowers.

One long time learner got up and left, and then the mom left. challenging, chaotic day. Tamara was super helpful!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we took the bus, with 8 learners, and went to a green street on 127th and stark.. it was really neat, logistics worked out well, Ivy got the bus passes, It was a little difficult to hear with cars, but it didn’t rain. One woman was taking video of us outside, and really excited about what we were doing! That was an unexpected magical bonus. I made an error by running across at the safe crossing flashing beacon, and everyone started running after me. That could have been differently planned. Also, there was a guy who was in vietnam who tried to engage one of our learners. Very interesting.
