Lesson Title: Off The Map
Date of Class: 2/2/16
Day of Class: Tuesday
Time of Class: 6-730
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Jess, Gerardo
Module: Society & Culture – Maps & Addresses
How Many Learners: 8
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): okSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 6
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 7
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 7
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 8
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 7
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 40
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a good class. Gerardo was practically floating, and we had several folks come back that I was suprised to see again. Also, I can see some development with a few folks who have been coming a while, but have been pretty flat with their progress. Group was baseline not low skill, so that enabled us to do some pairwork that’s normally pretty difficult.

Date of Class: 2/3/16
Day of Class: Wednesday
Time of Class: 12-130
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Colleen, Barbara, Ivy
Module: Science, Nature, Tech – Birds
How Many Learners: 11
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Cut up new loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 3
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 4
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 6
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today, I did things out of order, which kind of throws the group off. But.. it’s nice to see the higher skill folks who go to other classes come back to us as they realize that what we have to offer is valuable in a different way “it’s more practical”. Also, a couple of people returned, one who we haven’t seen in almost a year, who has been ill. So good to see her again.. coming back for the community. Doing full names, first and last took longer and almost bogged down, but as we moved into the wordcloud, that was forgotten. And then.. finished the class with Blackbird, a nice version with an older mccartney. People commented on the poetry.

Date of Class: 2/4/16
Day of Class: Thursday
Time of Class: 12-130
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Marc
Module: Shopping
How Many Learners: 12
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Grabbed some walgreens ads,Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 3
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 6
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Nice size class, one new learner with limited writing skills, and I asked two of our experienced folks to support her, they did well. The material was seen as relevant with the shopping ads, and one learner really worked to expand their fluency by saying.. I didn’t go shopping, but my daughter went shopping. We had two kids, one was hiding. But overall the class was lumpy. I made some choices that weren’t very clear.. do you have Kleenex at home? Also, had I planned my class, I would have been able to make better use of the shopping ads, and avoid some confusion related to brands not being very visible in the shopping ads.

Date of Class: 2/5/16
Day of Class: Friday
Time of Class: Noon-1:30
MC: Ramin
DJ: Ramin
Assistants: None
Module: At the Doctor
How Many Learners: 16
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): OK!Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 5
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 4
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 29
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): pretty big size class! People kept showing even after an hour. One of the learners said that she is there just one time because of her Mother. I struggled with one of the low level learners, she didn’t know how to write so it would take time for her to copy. But I made sure that she catches up each time with the rest and it worked out well . I should thank Patrik for keeping and growing class numbers at Rockwood. The number of learners that I had today (16!) is because of Patrik’s work everyday! Overall, great class, lots of laughter and openness to communicate to each other!

Date of Class: 2/8/16
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: 12-130
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Kelly
Module: Education & Govenment
How Many Learners: 10
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): cut up some new sheets, but also ran out of citizenship test sheetsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 4
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was a little bumpy today.. a couple of folks came late, one with lower skills, then wanted to leave early, the timing doesn’t work too well for her. There were a couple of kids, and they were good, but distracted mom a little bit. Kelly was very gracious in being flexible with all of the in the moment instructions. The content moved along a little slowly, but we can get there.
We chatted at length afterwards.

Date of Class: 2/8/16
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: 6-730
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Tamara
Module: Education & Government: Citizenship Test
How Many Learners: 9
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): goodSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 6
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 8
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 38
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A very nice class. Vietnamese learner brought new year treats for us, and that started us off in an interesting way, we incorporated that right in. Tamara was super helpful, and pointed out that there was a distracting political discussion between two Spanish speakers that could have been nipped in the bud a little earlier. There was a generally good feeling in this group, so much so that several folks stayed after talking to each other.

Date of Class: 2/9/16
Day of Class: Tuesday
Time of Class: 12-130
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Judy
Module: Society & Culture: Maps & Addresses
How Many Learners: 10
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): running a little low on loyalty cards.. the box is getting too full, and the maps that I used were not very good.Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 6
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 33
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): several folks came right in as the door opened, and I started working with them talking about the new year, and also talking about the bird walk. I tried a few new things for one learner who struggles with letters.. skywriting and also dictating letters. The latter went very slow, just wasn’t enough to keep the group rocking. Skywriting has it’s challenges, too, but at least the novelty helps. Would like to think of a good way to support this learner while they try to make the letters without slowing the rest of the group down.

Assistants: Jess, Dasha
Module: Maps and Addresses
How Many Learners: 8
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): OK!Self Evaluation

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) =4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 27
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was Jess’s “dress rehearsal” and it went great! She was nervous a little bit in the beginning but then overcame her nervousness and brought up everybody’s’ energy in class. I liked how she was emphasizing a lot on pronunciation with each student. She would push up to the right point and until learners would get it but definitely not overdoing or over pushing on them. We also had two new young learners who seemed to like the class as well. At the end everyone applauded to Jess and her first experience.

Module: Science, Nature, Tech – Birds
How Many Learners: 12
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): need to cut more loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 3

Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 7

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 36
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): largest group all week, we filled up the tables. The use of the highlighter for the lower skill learner worked very well! An amazing breakthrough, actually, so I bumped up my technique score to a high number. On the other side, my song didn’t work, and my listen and do didn’t work very well either.
2016-02-12 at 09:28 #7199KilpatrickRelentlessListenerKeymasterLesson Title: Not For Sale
Date of Class: 2/11/16
Day of Class: Thursday
Time of Class: 12-130
MC: Patrik

Assistants: Tony
Module: Shopping
How Many Learners: 9
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): cut up some new loyalty cards. need to organize the green box!Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 3
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 4
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 29
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Our los skill learner is improving rapidly as she figures out what the rules are.. needing to remind our regulars that their modeling is what gives the support. Tony was very gracious.. nervous at first, but fell right into it after a bit of coaching. A learner I haven’t seen in two years came back! But a little awkward yet with a kid in between him and another learner. But I’m happy the mom keeps coming, she’s coming along well too.

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 34
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Another big group! Actually it was 15 learners I didn’t count one of the learner’s kid. Her Mom and herself speak the same language as me (Dari), they left after an hour of class and the Mother told me that they have to go to the IRCO. Then another Mother had to leave also because her kid was distracting her a little bit. We had a comeback learner, I noticed that her writing has improved a lot so I said that to her and she said that she takes classes at Mt. Hood but still would like to participate in our classes because our classes is like family studying and they’re fun. Then something really “huuuuge” (Bernie Sander’s voice) happened our low level learner who’s struggling with writing, I used the same technique that Patrik used recently and it worked well but the coolest moment was when after 2 times of practice the same questions but with different scenarios she freaking did it without my help and with such a confidence that the class went “whoa!!!” that was a very powerful moment! My biggest mistake was that I intended to bring food but I didn’t it could make a very beautiful ending there was that moment where if I had food It would’ve been a great ending for my class.

Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 6
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Ramin did a great job MCing today. He had a well-prepared lesson that flowed well. 9 students were there at the start of class and stayed the whole time (several stayed after to chat and relax). Eugenia arrived at 7 and only stayed for about 10 minutes, then left again. We all agreed she seemed out of sorts but none of us knew what could have been the matter. Regardless of this, the flow was not interrupted. Ramin gave out chocolates today and most students took one and thanked him! There was a good mix of speaking, writing, moving around a little, reading, interacting.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 34
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class energy was good. A couple people we were missing last week popped up again, very good to see them. It’s a nice group, we’ve kind of imported about 50% of people are kind of new, I love seeing how the classroom evolves over time.. doesn’t go away, but keeps changing as people decide to move on, and others decide it’s a good place for them for a little while. Assistants were really great.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 41
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One of the highest scores I’ve given myself. Large class, though several key people were sadly not there, but folks were super interested in the Owl, Gladys was great, super professional, relaxed, flexible. We also passed around a talon and a claw, that was awesome. Will dig even deeper next week!

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 3Total Score: 30
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Another big class! this time 17 learners including 2 new learners. In the middle of my lesson while everybody was writing a woman and a girl came to our class to talk to me about our classes. I explained to them our schedule. The girl is from Brazil just recently moved so she needs to improve her English. They’re gonna join us on Monday! The class itself was very big and I had a very detailed lesson plan but not for that size of a group after some adjustments in my lesson plan, I managed to deliver an enjoyable, dynamic and productive class.
