Lesson Title: It’s good to see you again
    Date of Class: 01/19/2016
    Day of Class: Tuesday
    Time of Class: 6-7:30
    MC: Patrick McDade
    DJ: Alex Van Meter
    Assistants: Jess Denning
    Module: Small Talk
    How Many Learners: 8
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): gave out 2 alphabet sheets, made new attendance cards for everyone

    Self Evaluation

Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5

    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6

    Total Score: 33

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a couple of new and newer faces in attendance, and didn’t serve them superbly. We grouped them together because they came in first with the more advanced learners coming in later, and failed to recognize the problem and move them around. This said myself and Jess were generally able to make sure they stayed caught up with the lesson, and I think they had a good experience overall.

The class was fairly straight forward; starting with the alphabet sheet, going onto two similar dictation/dialogues, and ending with a video/dictation. The alphabet sheet exercise went fairly smoothly, with the students figuring out most of them with little trouble. The dictations/dialogues went smoothly, and I kinda felt like it was a bit low level for all but the least advanced students. The movie was a speech by MLK, which may have hit a nerve with two of our students from Russia as it mentioned Russia and China as totalitarian states. The final dictation from the speech was a bit too challenging for the lower level students to understand as it was a fairly long complex sentence, and this was the point in the class where the skill level segregation become most obvious.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we took the bus, with 8 learners, and went to a green street on 127th and stark.. it was really neat, logistics worked out well, Ivy got the bus passes, It was a little difficult to hear with cars, but it didn’t rain. One woman was taking video of us outside, and really excited about what we were doing! That was an unexpected magical bonus. I made an error by running across at the safe crossing flashing beacon, and everyone started running after me. That could have been differently planned. Also, there was a guy who was in vietnam who tried to engage one of our learners. Very interesting.

Hilarious moment of cracking up with one learner who is always funny. Slightly embarrassing moment with “a penny is worth 1 cent” because penny sounds like penis in Spanish, and.. when you know that, and they know you know that.. it’s weird. but I got through it with minimal embarrassment

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): By far my second best class ever! This time I believe I found out the reason why it was a successful class. reason #1 was my lesson plan. Everything in my lesson plan was relevant to the topic and it was interesting for the students because they heard many familiar words and many unfamiliar words and the lesson plan didn’t put a lot of pressure on the learners so they were open to ask questions. For example, someone asked what does preparedness mean? apparently many learners struggled with that word. reason #2 was my energy that I brought into class. In the beginning I was nervous a little bit though because it has been awhile since I’ve taught my last class but thanks to the reason #1 it made everyone to be open and therefore my energy leveled up and that brought me to the reason #3 so because my energy leveled up it affected learners a lot which gave me a lot of confidence and signals that I’m doing the right thing. In addition, all of the above mentioned reasons made the class to be very fun, open to each other, engaged and connected. FYI: one of the librarians told me that due to the construction at Rockwood library they will cancel Monday afternoon classes.

One long time learner got up and left, and then the mom left. challenging, chaotic day. Tamara was super helpful!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A great day with Judy and Colleen.. they got a really good show, and the table filled up very nicely, though folks had trouble finding parking and there were a couple newcomers and a couple of latecomers creating a little bumpiness.. also the class was a little flat since small talk doesn’t have a lot of visible stuff with it, and some of the long timers were waiting around a lot, but new connections were made, and I chatted at length with the shadowers.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class was surprisingly small today.. and at first, it was just one, then a new person with a very high skill level. I’m sure the parking situation was part of it. But also, some changes I’ve made, such as separating two people or other things might have made a negative impact. Maybe folks are worried we might go on another trip? Not sure. But, a couple of returnees have come several times showed up around 2pm.. we let them know when the time of the class was. Another interesting thing.. one of the Russian speaking librarians has started to create several classes in russian around the ESL class.. it’s really interesting, and indicates the success of our model to draw community members in, and then plug them into other things.

The class was great, Patrik brought in some coins to practice counting the coins. Learners were focused and concentrated during that activity to count the coins. We also had a new learner that may join us at the PPT-Connect!

We went over the Alphabet, yell n spell, Today’s lesson, listen and Point, a dialogue related to emergency situation, TPR, another short dialogue. I had two new learners. One of them had a kid with her and the kid was distracting her so she wasn’t able to concentrate on activities but I did my best to include her by supporting her along the way and at the end she asked me about the schedule of our classes, I guess that’s a good sign. The other new learner was a little bit discouraged in the beginning because she thought that this is not her level but then I paid a decent amount of attention to her to make sure that she is engaged and and found her minuses and pushed a little bit on those minuses which she seemed to be appreciative of at the end and eventually she bloomed like a flower :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small group but one of our regulars came back. I think I really challenged them a lot, and it’s interesting.. the classes are small, like, they got smaller after the trip, and I’m not sure if it’s that I’m pushing them harder, or if they had become accustomed to the variety in the past? in any case, I’m not too worried that they will grow, but it’s fascinating and something to keep my eye on. We used the citizenship test and pointed to a page, and it seemed to be well received. Then we played schoolhouse rock three ring government, and this was well received. folks seemed pleased and surprised by the citizenship work.

oh! I started off with “x says that it’s cold outside.. ” and this was a really rough start. BUT – also a couple of the vietnamesse students are really making progress.. like, the fastest I’ve ever seen anyone. I’m pleased and amazed.

I was a little worried when several new folks came in quite late, along with an English speaker who took us by surprise. I wasn’t sure how it would go, but the group came together, and today, I could really see some folks doing quite well, improvling noticeably. But they were excited to see citizenship test, and the video went over well. Wish the sound on my tablet was a little better!

A couple of our folks who have been coming a lot with me are really improving noticeably, which is very encouraging to see with this model. Although I worry a little what happens when less skilled people come. I brought the map today, and was surprised this group hadn’t really seen it before.. one of our classic modules but unfamiliar for folks here. Still, it also didn’t seem to be too challenging. Group wasn’t exactly rowdy but.. restless? couldn’t quite get them on the same page. But, good connection between folks, that was nice. Started off the class describing how I got to class, which was good until other folks came.
