What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I decided not to start with alphabet, I kind of worked with Thanksgiving – Did you make a Turkey for Thanksgiving? We learned some interesting things about everyone, one learner making an Iranian style Turkey because their kids like it. The lesson was slow and meandering, we focused on first and last names, and only brought in the actual topic at the very end. But it felt enjoyable.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Energetic and laughy class, but a little hard to keep on track. It was great to have Svetlana back after a year, she’s so great and really gets how it works. We used the stormwater model and she brought another Americorps with her. The highlight was poop – it was hilarious. Didn’t quite finish on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A very small group for Veterans Day. Not surprising, it’s one of those days that’s a little confusing, since everything else is closed. In the future, being clear about what’s coming up could help. But it’s nice to work with folks more personally, and we did some pronunciation work. In a couple cases, I felt like it was creating frustration, but I switched direction, and it helped. One learner is finally getting his Z down, after many many classes. Encouraging to see this happen!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was great having Ben there.. one new learner, and several returnees. It’s nice that we have a group that’s sticking.. and I’m kind of happy to be out there to see if I can grow this community a little bit. I could see skills developing.. and fear falling away.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): large class, folks kept coming, up until quite late, and the latest folks didn’t integrate well. lovely to see so many folks there! people are starting to bring their own friends.. I felt off balance, and the materials were a little challenging to work with, passing around pictures, for that size of group. I tried a few things like having one group writing down, but it just gets off balance. Ivy and Barbara really saved the day!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): a fun class, and it was great to have another library person come and check it out.. she liked it. The group was in good spirits, though I’m struggling a little with the loyalty cards just not being quite right, even though I taught last night. Too many cards! But we are getting towards the beginning of the month, so we can eliminate many of them. There was a lot of positive response when Sally asked.. do they get a prize for completing their card? I said, yes, they’ll get a tablet if they go to 100 classes.. and there was an audible excitement to that!

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): small group, we didn’t do alphabet this time, and started with a dictation.. it was great having gabby back and chelsi is into it. A bit of a struggle for a couple of folks.. but the pictures of folks from Ellis Island were interesting and helped clarify some issues around immigration for higher skill folks – I said – “before 1892, there was no immigration system” one learner said.. that was better then.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A nice, large class. 3 new people, I really mixed people up, and I think that helps a lot to create new connections. The side table had ladies in it, and I’m splitting up some of the vietnamese folks.. I think they like it, though they feel like they shouldn’t like it. Lots of challenging medical jargon today.. the listen and do was not as on target as I’d like to see..

Module: Refugees in Oregon (Was supposed to be Oregon Health Plan)
How Many Learners: 13

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had two shadowers, and they were great – but the class was overall a little bit of a mess.. I had the wrong module, for one thing. And I couldn’t get anything visually interesting out on the table. The two tables were separated by hispanos and other languages, and it would have been better to mix them up a little. Ultimately, several folks disenrolled, and at least two low skill folks said it was too hard, and one high skill person said it was too easy. Pretty classic failed to win them over. The energy was pretty good, though.. and our assistants were eager, but also a little overwhelmed.

Day of Class: Tuesday
Time of Class: 6-730
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Kim, Brenna
Module: Refugees in Oregon
How Many Learners: 7
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Made some more loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 3
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 4
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 4
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 2
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 4Total Score: 21
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One of the least effective classes I’ve had in a long time. I got one learners name totally wrong.. multiple times and was not seeing it. Group was small, my energy was off, I was tired, and folks weren’t working together.. plus, with two new people, I was training them both, ineffectively, at the same time. One of those days you just have to apologize over and over.

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 4Total Score: 27
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not a bad class.. lots of people so we had to put folks on the side. Energy was good, though, and I tried something new.. I had the assistants mix people up.. which turned that part into something useful. Some of the dictations were quite long.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We used the Deck of Professions today, and passed them around this is Jerzy Kowarski.. The names are quite difficult – and it got bogged down a little. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with the Deck in this way..
