What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had two shadowers, and they were great – but the class was overall a little bit of a mess.. I had the wrong module, for one thing. And I couldn’t get anything visually interesting out on the table. The two tables were separated by hispanos and other languages, and it would have been better to mix them up a little. Ultimately, several folks disenrolled, and at least two low skill folks said it was too hard, and one high skill person said it was too easy. Pretty classic failed to win them over. The energy was pretty good, though.. and our assistants were eager, but also a little overwhelmed.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): small group, we didn’t do alphabet this time, and started with a dictation.. it was great having gabby back and chelsi is into it. A bit of a struggle for a couple of folks.. but the pictures of folks from Ellis Island were interesting and helped clarify some issues around immigration for higher skill folks – I said – “before 1892, there was no immigration system” one learner said.. that was better then.

Tonight was Ethan’s dress rehearsal. We only had two learners show up tonight so it took a little longer than usual to bring up the energy level for the group. Once we had a good energy level established the learners relaxed and opened up a little more. This gave Ethan a little more to work with so by the halfway point of the class, the group was laughing and having a good time. The learners also seemed to enjoy the hand gestures that Ethan made up for our “kitchen verbs” activity. Nice start Ethan!November 18, 2015 at 10:53 pm #6955Zadok TaylorSpectatorLesson Title: Home is where the heart is

There was a bit of confusion as to when the last night of class was, so 2 of our 3 learners showed up a bit late but they made it. Ethan brought good energy to the group, doing some dictation with “Santa Clause is Coming to Town”. After the dictation, we watched a YouTube video of the song and sang through it together. Nice class Ethan!December 2, 2015 at 11:55 pm #6988Ethan JacotSpectatorLesson Title: In the dead of winter

Total Score: 30What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We went through the Alphabet exercise and yell & spell as normal. After, we dictated address numbers then dictated and practiced saying 3 mini dialogues pertaining to finding places / asking for and receiving address information for places. We ended with a TPR game involving scarves, gloves, canned food, and other winter related items. Students struggled with the ways we say numbers differently when they are addresses. Moreover, ordinal numbers such as 5th and 2nd took longer to dictate than others. -
