What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time and ended on time. We worked with a short dialog, first writing it down, then choral response, and practicing it around the table. There was lots of laughing and a few new learners who fit right in. Connection was high for this class and it was clear the learners were working together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a couple minutes late and ended on time. We pointed to letters on the alphabet sheet, spelled our names, and wrote down the lesson title, practicing pronunciation afterwards. The MC had the learners write a few sentences about Burgerville unionizing and had the learners ask each other if they were part of a union. Then, we passed out blank BINGO cards and had the learners fill in the spaces with union related words like collective bargaining (shout out to Ramin for helping me come up with the idea to use union related vocab). With two minutes to spare after a round of BINGO, we did a listen and do activity using work related verbs. The MC asked a couple learners what they do and we came up with words like cook, dig, type, and listen to a heartbeat. Overall, there was a ton of laughing and the group was super connected and engaged throughout the whole class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We worked with the alphabet sheets, spelled our names, dictated the title of the lesson, wrote down and practiced a couple dialogs, and did a listen and point activity with a map. It was a dress rehearsal and the auditioner was calm and there was good connection between learners and facilitators. We moved a lot of learners around so they wren’t sitting in their usual spots and it worked really well having them work with people they hadn’t before. There were 2 new learners too who expressed interest in coming back. Towards the middle of the class there was a man standing outside of the class watching so I invited him in to assist. He was unsure how to be useful at first but he got more comfortable and started helping out.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The learners were late to class by a little under 5 minutes. We got started with the alphabet sheet and names, and moved to the title of todays lesson. Just before that finished, a learner and their kid joined us so we did names again to introduce them since they were new to the class. It was a Dress Rehearsal but the class flowed pretty smoothly. There was laughing and the learners were really engaged. We did a listen and point with a map of Oregon, sentence dictation with the weekend weather forecast, and a document search a flyer about Green Streets. We ran out of activities for the last 15 minutes of class so we filled that time in with a round robin activity about Spring and a quick dialog about the weather.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Hands down, the best PPT class I’ve ever had. The learners were engaged and connected the entire time, MC and assistant were engaged and participated but the class wasn’t focused on them. There was A TON of laughing, and learners had the opportunity to ask questions and have side conversations (in English) without moving away from the lesson. The alphabet sheet flowed super well, we did names, and the title of today’s lesson afterwards. Then, we wrote down the names of some awesome civil rights movement heroes (Fannie Lou Hamer, Paul Robeson, Bob Marley, Malcolm X, Claudette Colvin, Muhammad Ali, Nina Simone). We pointed to words in a timeline of Martin Luther King Jr’s life. Before class ended we wrote down “The time is always right to do what is right”, practiced pronunciation word-by-word, as chunks, and then as a whole sentence. Afterwards, the MC said “Ready?”, the class responded with a strong ready, “Now, go home”, and the learners were surprised the class went by so quickly. A few learners stayed after and chatted about more language learning opportunities and one learner gave my MC an orange and another gave them a Starbucks gift card (for being so great lol).
