What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Dictation and read aloud about different types of squash. One high level learner attended who helped mid level learners around him. One low level learner struggled to participate in activities and keep up with others. It was challenging to integrate her with other students; seating arrangements could have been better i.e. seating her inbetween two higher level learners. Read aloud went on a little too long, but ended well because higher level learner was able to perform the same task that facilitators were.January 24, 2018 at 12:41 pm #9633Ian ConnellySpectatorLesson Title: Winter Squash

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): First class, went very well, had many eager learners. Room arrangement went pretty well. Not space for more than another person or two to join at this point. MC did good job of getting people to trust him although it is all new to them and moving very systematically.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Not as many learners showed up to this class. Alphabet spell moved pretty quickly at times too fast for a couple of learners but was well organized. Dictation was educational and went well with the map-point activity. A couple of learners were concerned about the pace of the dictation section, were hoping for it to be slower, louder and more deliberate. One learner also wanted to write everybody’s name down after the fact and we reminded him to be patient and practice more over time. That was a kind of uncomfortable moment because those two learners felt swamped behind, but MC and I decided that we would be slower with the Yell and Spell, have more systematic Dictation sequence and do more interactive Model-down activitiesJanuary 25, 2018 at 8:26 pm #9647Ramin TokhiSpectatorLesson Title: “Back to the land”

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Very pleased to see so many folks show up, we had a very good well paced alphabet sheet activity and name spell. Fire alarm went off which upset the pace of the class but MC managed it super well. We have a new learner with very low skill level, not very good writing skills and wasn’t following what the Name Spell activity was about, but I think she received enough support to want to come back tomorrow.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): 8 Learners, our very low skill level Chinese speaker showed up again, seemed like she felt pretty overwhelmed but was able to participate. Generally lots of laughter in the class, thats good. Reminded of importance of model down. Some learners commented on it being difficult, all the words, especially towards the end with green infrastructure pictures.

We started with one student only so I thought it was going to be difficult because we where to many teachers but then 3 more learners showed up and it went great, I felt like we had too much dictation but at the end of class Jacob showed the learners a small part of a song so they had to listen and then write down the dictation.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Borrowed a lesson plan from Na’ama, as I did not know much about the materials; it worked out well! I went through things a little quickly and ad-libbed some dictation at the end, but I think the learners all felt engaged and enjoyed the lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty large class with 2 or 3 new learners. Some folks who we haven’t seen for a week or more showed up again so that was nice. One learner insists on writing names and spelling everything out which sort of derails the group and keeps him from practicing pronunciation. MC corrected him and asked him to put pencil down and it was an awkward minute but everything carried on fine. We did round Robin “This is a …” with storm water picture things. Also were able to promote the Connect to Kinder event tonight. Great having so many shadowers! really good class today

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The learners were late to class by a little under 5 minutes. We got started with the alphabet sheet and names, and moved to the title of todays lesson. Just before that finished, a learner and their kid joined us so we did names again to introduce them since they were new to the class. It was a Dress Rehearsal but the class flowed pretty smoothly. There was laughing and the learners were really engaged. We did a listen and point with a map of Oregon, sentence dictation with the weekend weather forecast, and a document search a flyer about Green Streets. We ran out of activities for the last 15 minutes of class so we filled that time in with a round robin activity about Spring and a quick dialog about the weather.

We had a big group show up including some people that we didn’t think would come back. We kept debating adding a new table and ended up not… but probably should have cuz folks were suuper tight. All went pretty well, except for one learner insisting on writing everyone’s names down and MC intervening on that. There was some awkwardness there but no harm done. Did pass-around with Stormwater MGMT sheets and that was fun.February 13, 2018 at 9:17 pm #9732Christina Welch-MorenoSpectatorLesson Title: At the doctor

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a small group of learners show up to class. Tonight’s activities ended early as we went through them fairly quickly and so we filled the rest of the time with round robin, dictation, and writing activities. There was a lack of consistency with the initiated choral response throughout the class, however, the students were engaged, having fun, and connected well with each other. Overall, it was a great class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a smaller class than normal because there was no Head Start this morning, which also meant we had an extra kid hanging out with us, who participated in some of the activities. The smaller group actually worked out really well with this lesson, especially for the additional dictation which we had. After alphabet sheet and names, we did a document search using the green street fact sheet, passed around the photos of the green infrastructure, and listened to/ wrote down some of the lyrics of “Somewhere over the rainbow.” Repeating the green infrastructure cards was helpful for learners to feel more comfortable with the activity and those words, and the song was a fun addition. Learners were able to follow along with their written lyrics which was really cool to see! Some learners are still really invested in writing everything down and having every word explained. Overall it was a fun class!
