Lesson Title: I like eating & drinking outdoors
Date of Class: 16 May 2018

    How Many Learners: 2
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): I need to get those sharpened pencils back to Rockwood ! plenty of everything else

    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7

    Total Score: 42

The two learners were slightly more engaged than an average P*P*T session. We had fun with a this is an apple with colour photos of national dishes of lots of countries that Thitichaya made with master’s student printing allowance (paid for out of annual student fee).

We also had fun writing our given and family names in a lot of writing systems: Thai and Hebrew and some others. Thitichaya always puts great twists on familiar P*P*T activities.

I arrived at 2:03 pm and never texted Thitichaya to say where I was or when I would arrive. I feel super bad about that. My devices are in grave disrepair. Many pigs were despondent, as their flights were scrubbed due to the administrative delays caused by my decrepit gadgetry.

Ben and I showed up around 5:40. And started working out a system of baseball signs. Santi showed up around 5:45. When most of the learners were there, Ben told them, in Spanish, that it was gonna be his second silent class. Then Santi asked him to repeat it in English, and he did.

At 6:00, Ben started signaling me, signing ASL letters and numbers (like 3 and 8) to do the alphabet listen and point. Ben had some great series of confusables, like a,h,8 and z,g,3,d, then fingerspelled his name and we did choral response, letter by letter. Then Santi and I orally spelled our names and I asked “What’s my name?” “What’s their name?” and then we did that with the learners with me asking what their names where and getting choral responses.

Then Ben cued me to say the title of the lesson, and Santi repeated it a bunch of times. Then Santi did whole part whole on the title. Ben cued me to start a dictation of “Taxes pay for military, healthcare, education, and other social services.” Santi found this sentence pretty funny had a lot of fun repeating it and doing whole part whole with wild inflections.

Ben had worked out a number-cue system with me, before 6:00, for a document search about what taxes pay for, so we handed out the docs (take one, pass ’em down). Then Ben would make the ASL sign for a number, and I would read that word or phrase in the document. Learners looked for the words and phrases. Santi helped with you got it’s. We finished with the last item in the document search just as it was time to leave.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We taught in a different room today because there was a flower-arranging class in our normal room. Class was set up in a u-shape with fewer tables, but it seemed to work out. Today’s lesson focused on the results of the election. We started with alphabet and names, and continued with dictation about the results of the election. Then we did a listen and point about the low voter turnout. Lucas finished with a video.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a couple minutes late and ended on time. We pointed to letters on the alphabet sheet, spelled our names, and wrote down the lesson title, practicing pronunciation afterwards. The MC had the learners write a few sentences about Burgerville unionizing and had the learners ask each other if they were part of a union. Then, we passed out blank BINGO cards and had the learners fill in the spaces with union related words like collective bargaining (shout out to Ramin for helping me come up with the idea to use union related vocab). With two minutes to spare after a round of BINGO, we did a listen and do activity using work related verbs. The MC asked a couple learners what they do and we came up with words like cook, dig, type, and listen to a heartbeat. Overall, there was a ton of laughing and the group was super connected and engaged throughout the whole class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): this was a really nice class.. larger group than we’ve seen in a while, all familiars, but also kind of everyone that hasn’t shown up in a while. I liked that afterwards, three learners staying outside after class talking. that’s the best. We got to talk about someone’s baby. one thing that was probably a mistake is muslim woman wanted to leave early, it was puzzling, after reflecting for most of the day on it, realized that it might be because islam doesn’t like imgaes of humans or gambling, so passing around a deck of cards could be religious violation, especially during Ramadan. An apology is in order! Cheney was very helpful from the beginning.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today, I was a learner because there were many shadowers, so there were 6 learners including me. However, Patrik could make a class was fun. He could manage 2 shadowers for 1 learner. We have learned about a city in Oregon. We had opportunities to talk about a city which we have been before. We have also learned about how to set a tent. Patrik brought a tent and showed us how to do it with dictation. Even though, there were many shadowers, we also had fun because our learners were exciting to meet new people and chatted to each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a very interesting class. One new person from Lutheran Community Services from Uzbekistan, new language for us. Interesting discussion unfolded about Islam, and I learned that it’s true, that the Deck of Professions is Haram in Islam. We should be careful about using it. Apparently, video is fine, so we can watch songs, but passing around likenesses of living beings is taboo. We listened to Leaving on a Jet Plane, which Christiane loved, and had some useful language, but we didn’t get to the chorus.
