What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class today was small. We started with standard procedure, on the topic of sales tax. We did a few dialogues comparing prices between Washington and Oregon, after having done a noun round robin and some dictations about what sales tax is. A lot of complications came up regarding how to write monetary amounts. Something we’ve noted for the future.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today’s class was the largest I’ve seen at Rockwood. There was more linguistic diversity as well (as opposed to almost all Spanish speakers, as previously). Brian brought a backpack full of stuff that would be useful in an emergency. The items were identified, passed around, and used as words for dictation. It quickly became apparent that one of the lower-level learners especially struggles with writing, so I tried focusing with her one-on-one when during the next activity – sentence dictation. A technique Brian used to give the lower-level learners more practice on pronouncing words in the sentence dictation without boring the higher-level learners was to add a rhythmic call-and-response sequence. We also did a word search. There were 3 new learners, each with a different native language.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was extremely collaborative, even for Rockwood. The way the seating worked out, HL learners were in just the right places and were very happy to assist their seatmates. There were four different first languages for the eight people in the class! Learners seemed very interested in what things are in an Emergency Kit and we looked on our phones to find each item so everyone would know what these items looked like. We were also curious about the acronym, NOAA, as in radio. PLayed a quick 8 minute game of BINGO with cards I had leftover from last class, but I forgot to save the bingo caller’s list, so Judy and I had to figure it out using process of elimination with the unused cards. Very casual and communicative class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was Sara’s last day as well as a scheduled supervision. The topic was sin tax, with the lesson built around an informative video. We watched the video, dictated sentences from it, and then rewatched it. Because there were two shadowers and four learners, each learner ended up with a lot of individualized attention. Then we did a few dialogues about the sin tax and the difference in cost in Seattle vs. Portland. Sara finished the lesson by giving out snacks.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started out working with alphabet sheets, then dictated the lesson title, then some vocab related to tax preparation items (W2, 10-40, pen, envelope, stamps, etc.) and then used those items to do “this is an apple.” We finished with a word search. We had a big group with new students, but the group with new students but great connection!

We had a group of 13 tonight and Santiago as an assistant, no new learners this time. The lesson had a dictation/round-robin asking if we have have heard of Drop, Cover, and Hold; a document search with earthquake safety tips; and dictation from a video illustrating the Drop, Cover, and Hold technique. It was a quicker lesson than normal to make time for a library survey at the end, which was difficult for most of the learners. To make it easier, we tried doing some of the questions round-robin-style, summarizing the questions in simpler terms, and encouraging use of their first languages on the open-ended questions.Lesson Title: Where’re you gunna be when the big one hits?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Module focus was the significance of May Day. Connection was impressively high in this class. Higher level learners readily stepped up to assist their classmates no matter the language differences. One of the higher level learners brought up a good point during the Round Robin regarding the following question: “Should kids have jobs?” She shared that since the learners did not fully understand the question (she herself required some clarification), how could they be sure of how to answer the question. Any thoughts on how to address this in the future? Exercises included; Word search about Burgerville Union, History Channel video and dictations covering May Day and International Workers’ Day.

However, after spelling our name, learners enjoyed with lesson and game activity. They engaged and participated a lot because of Santiago’s energy. We had a lot of fun in a class. Afterwards, we had time to eat some snacks and chatted to each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was mostly a high-level class, so I challenged them with some unique words. We asked each other about our volunteering experience during the Round Robin. We played a rousing game of BINGO, then made cards to put in the Meals on Wheels delivery boxes. I contacted M.O.W. previously and their point person said she would love to receive our cards. I’ll bring them to her tomorrow. I felt proud that the learners challenged themselves with what they wrote on their cards and I am FLOORED at the progress of a certain someone who wanted to write such a lovely message on her card. My heart grew three sizes today! <3
