What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we had a new student it was her first time ever learning English. It was a new challenge but we did pretty well and both Brian and I agree that we saw the benefits of the Alphabet in the beginning it was easy to see how quickly she was progressing. The students seem to connect well with the curriculum and it was engaging. We thought maybe more use of visuals could help anl little more. The students helped each other a lot especially with the new learner. Overall it was a really good class.

April 12, 2018 at 7:41 am #9987Elizabeth HildebrandSpectatorThis was the first time I had the opportunity to observe Patrik in the classroom and found it very helpful and energizing. He took the time to review the importance of a few seemingly simple exercises, like Alphabet Listen & Point, and explained how really complex and vital its function is. And also how to make the exercise fun. It was a great learning experience for me!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 2 learners; 1 came at 6:30 and the other at 7:10- When the 1st learner arrived we did a brief alphabet activity and names, and then practiced asking eachother questions about social media use. She only uses snapchat and since neither I nor Sofia use that platform, we asked her to tell us about it. This was the perfect opportunity to a variation of the Language Experience Approach (LEA) activity as she was able to explain it in a way we could understand but needed some help with grammar. So I had her say a sentence, then I corrected it as she wrote it down. She loved it! We did a few sentences and then the 2nd learner came in. He had been to classes before but hadn’t been in a while. His daughter- who attends Rigler-was with him and after him and Sofia chatting briefly, we got onto the topic of Rigler becoming a Spanish only school starting next year- he indicated that he didn’t know this information but the other learner, and Sofia verified that it is in fact the case. It was an interesting and important conversation and the remainder of the class was spent discussing the issue.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Having one learner was probably reflective of the school being in “lock down” all day because of a police incident. Nonetheless, Max was well prepared for the topic with a well designed lesson plan focusing on trees- including lots of colored prints and activities. The learner appeared to thrive on the extra attention and exhibited considerable progress since starting the program. Arbor Day on 4/21/18 was highlighted.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Gastón led the learners through learning about native plants in the Pacific Northwest. After looking at diagrams of native plants, the learners chose their favorite plant and sketched it. Without the name of the plant with the drawings, they would introduce their plants to other learners. We also looked at pictures of native plants and talked about their medicinal properties.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Three learners came to class, all a little late(closer to 6:30) but we began right away with the usual alphabet and yell n spell. Since the weather has been so nice and I didn’t have time to plan a new class about volunteering, I went with a summer activity themed class which ended up being a hit! We explored a word cloud related to the outdoors and summer activities. Using images of things we do outside/in warm weather, learners learned new vocabulary and asked each other questions like ‘Have you ever been horseback riding/swimming/hikining, etc.. Lots of engagement and laughter :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Due to very keen interest in the Hawaii earthquake and watching a magma-spreading video, and knowing that the previous lesson had been on quake preparedness, I actually abandoned unions for the majority to discuss/dictate/explore the topic at hand, which the two students were more interested in. Dictated sentences; used phones for listen and points; diagrams of volcanos & magma causing earthquake; maps of hawaii, etc. At the end, we started to launch into Burgerville union, but also they were very interested to talk about the natural, organic menu as well as understand the location of the nearest one, so we did a little of that. it all was very engaging, driven by student interest and was relevant to current events, which was great!
