What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We talked about a little about Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah, and asked learners what holidays they celebrated in the winter. We also wrote down the lyrics to Frosty the Snowman, listened to the song, and sang a little of it. There was lots of laughing and one learner connected the song to something their kid was working on in school.

We had 2 young learners who were difficult to get focused and a new learner who didn’t seem sure of the PPT approach. We wrote down a few sentences, asked a few round robin questions about Holidays we celebrate this time of year, and we played BINGO.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 2 new learners and 2 new shadowers. We talked a little about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Many learners didn’t know what Hanukkah or Kwanzaa were. It was difficult to explain/act out what Hanukkah was for low level learners. The learners wrote down a few sentences, asked a few round robin questions on what holidays they celebrated this time of year, and we worked with two dialogs asking “What day of the week is Christmas on?” and “Do you work on Christmas?”. The learners were very engaged.

The game was fun though. The class was split in two teams and the learners had to compete to create a word using scrabble pieces. A few learners were already making word that we used in the class before the MC named a few

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had two learners and a bunch of regularly returning learners. We wrote down a few sentences about Halloween, practiced a dialog about trick-or-treating, and played two games. The first game was vocabulary-style BINGO. The learners got kind of competitive so it was pretty fun. The second game was new to me and the learners had a blast! The MC spread a bunch of scrabble pieces on the table, shouted out a word, and the two teams had to work with their teammates to spell out the word correctly. One new learner came in really late and shied away from working with the people around her until this activity. She was laughing and it looked like she was having a lot of fun.

I arranged the class to avoid racial tension the best I could but I’m ready to discuss better ideas. Aside from that we did round robin, listen and find with some hop pass information, and I gave out a few hop passes!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was the last day of this class but it was a lot of fun. We did some dictation and choral response, a quick round robin questions, and then we played Bingo with words around Farmers Markets. This activity got intense, partially because this group is pretty competitive, and also because there was only one prize. We were only going to do one round but we got 3 winners! So, we played another round where only those 3 played while the other learners took turns calling the words. The winner got a $10 Regal gift card.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There wasn’t any childcare so there were 22 children running around the classroom! Despite that, this was one of my BEST classes in over a year. The flow started off amazingly as soon as we started the alphabet sheet and remained great throughout the class. Learners were laughing, engaged, and connected for the dictation about the Festival of Nations. They were intrigued as we filled out a blank BINGO sheet with words pertaining to farmers markets to finish next week.
