What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Mixed it up a little bit with US states.. little rocky, a few new people, groups somewhat separated into cultural groups, and one large table had lower skill, less literate folks and we really want to mix people up a little more in the future. I was still a little shaky, and the shadower left a little early.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): first class, a little rowdy and complicated. I was there early to get ready. lots of kids. downstairs space is good, but also challenging. many familiar faces. not sure how it was going to come together, and folks just kept coming.. two new shadowers were great, but I wasn’t expecting them so I was frantic at the beginning. Seemed to go ok, though, and I got a thumbs up.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): On this day, I flyered the whole complex, so I was there in plenty of time with stuff. We did get a few people, two children brought their mom, and two other children tagged along. It was interesting, but from the vantage point of today, they didn’t come back. It’s more than a month since this class happened that I’m updating the website.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a very interesting class. One new person from Lutheran Community Services from Uzbekistan, new language for us. Interesting discussion unfolded about Islam, and I learned that it’s true, that the Deck of Professions is Haram in Islam. We should be careful about using it. Apparently, video is fine, so we can watch songs, but passing around likenesses of living beings is taboo. We listened to Leaving on a Jet Plane, which Christiane loved, and had some useful language, but we didn’t get to the chorus.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We got a good turnout for the last week! I didn’t get to talk about all the summer options, unfortunately, but did pass out the sheet. Jensine and Zoe were great. A couple of learners seemed disengaged for a bit, but perked up later.. we had to turn away one learner who was late, I don’t love that, but that’s what the library wants the policy to be. Ivy had a good story about crashing into a gate while skiing. Was good to see three of the learners outside talking to each other, that’s what we want to see happen! Tried something new: asked for people to do an image search on their phones for crater lake and cannon beach. Though this sometimes happens informally, I haven’t actually done this specifically (it happened because my phone wouldn’t connect.. and I’m like.. maybe they can do this! Seemed to be engaging for them.

But it was cool, because program partner and new Latino Network coordinator who I know came by, and we had a chance to talk about stuff, so that was great! We mostly talked about summer plans, future plans, and practice.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): this was a really nice class.. larger group than we’ve seen in a while, all familiars, but also kind of everyone that hasn’t shown up in a while. I liked that afterwards, three learners staying outside after class talking. that’s the best. We got to talk about someone’s baby. one thing that was probably a mistake is muslim woman wanted to leave early, it was puzzling, after reflecting for most of the day on it, realized that it might be because islam doesn’t like imgaes of humans or gambling, so passing around a deck of cards could be religious violation, especially during Ramadan. An apology is in order! Cheney was very helpful from the beginning.

I created a cocktail party activity where they all wrote down a little about my mom, and then walked around and practiced with each other. though there seemed to be a little confusion about how to make this work, they did respond well.

It was a little awkward because of the small class, but fortunately, a few more than we’ve seen lately came, and everyone got lots of attention. The CM folks seemed to enjoy it, and a few expressed interest in connecting with us again. Passing around the deck of professions worked well. Then.. after that, we went to a Planning & Sustainability Commission Hearing downtown for the Residential Infill Project, and several people came from the class. So quite a good day. Two week delay for report bumped down reflection number.

Though there was some connection and interest, I felt like my way of guiding my mom could have come across as not respectful, and the new learner was skeptical of the techniques we were using, though she did participate.
