What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Melissa and Cara were at the community room early and left the door open. We didn’t see any residents on the way in or around the building while we were there. We waited until 6:30 and then locked up the room. There was a big SUN celebration at Kelly so hopefully that is the reason no one was able to attend.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I (Zoe) arrived at 5:40 and when I arrived Santiago texted me to say he was having issues with transportation and would be about 10 minutes late. It was my first time at the Bellrose Station complex, so I walked around until I could confirm which space was the community room. I sat at one of the picnic tables outside to wait for learners. It wasn’t long before a boy wanted to play ball. We played catch for a while, but I was able to talk with a few parents in the area about the classes as well. They were aware of the classes. The boy’s friend came to play too.
Santiago arrived at 6:10. We played with the boys and a few other children who came by for the rest of the afternoon. At 7:30 we had a productive reflection about recruiting more learners and issues of safety in the learning space. We both agreed that precautions need to be taken and ideally no one should be alone in a room with learners or with children.esson Title:Let’s Go to the Rose Festival

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): None of the learners showed up. But as requested we kept a presence until 7:30 and during the class time we were visited by several kiddos from the complex. At 7:25 one of the children indicated her mother wanted to come but mom thought the class ended at 6pm. We set her straight and pointed out the flyer o the window for reference. Hopefully next week will include a new learner form the complex. Perhaps a sandwich board could be made to more obviously indicate a class is available and it could be put out when classes are in session.

We said goodbye to Ian – who kindly hung out at Kelly to help any lost learners find their way. Lots of good round robins about housing vouchers and affordable rent, and then we did listen and point on a great infographic about the government subsidizing wealthy homeowners more than low income renters. We finished with some dictating sentences from a video. Melissa went out after 6:15 and talked to a parent and from there we were able to have 3 new learners. We did a couple of round robins around Flag Day and did dictation. We also did a document and word search. Students picked up really quickly on the structure of the class and were engaged with the activities. The connection with the students was slightly there due to the activities, but I think the more they come and interact with each other the better connected they will be. Overall, it was a really enjoyable class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners showed up mostly on time and seemed comfortable with the location of the class. One learner commented that 10:00 am is a much more convenient time (compared to 9). All the learners were Vietnamese speakers, so there was a lot of discussion during the class and clarification about definitions and grammar, but it all seemed very productive and learners were extremely engaged (in the English and in the content of the lesson). We talked about World Environment Day, and not pouring fats, oil, and grease down the drain. Zoe brought in a fat, oil, and grease to pass around in a round robin, and we did a document search with a BES fact sheet. Zoe also found a very informative video that learners seemed interested in. We got a lot of positive feedback from learners and everyone seemed very interested and excited to be there!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I arrived and the office was locked. 5 learners came and we gathered outside, talking about briefly about doing class on a picnic bench and using the large plastic alphabet on the playground as a group version of yell-and-spell if we couldn’t get inside. The office manager came by to unlock and we began. Since today is the solstice, there was a common theme of summer. We did dictation progression with summer gardening tips, a word search with an infographic about saving energy in the summer, a modified version of This is an Apple where I demonstrated how to make an easy summer toy, and ended with a video from Multnomah County about staying cool in the heat. C-Z-G was a common struggle among the Vietnamese-speaking learners during alphabet listen/point.

The learner requested more conversational practice and MC agreed to try if the class continues to be only one learner. MC and DJ suggested she watch videos with the close captioning turned on so she can practice at home too. We were joined by Jaclynn who was a great shadower. Participating in PPT is preparing her for ESL teaching that she has been requested to do with parents of the children who attend the school she works at. Lesson included Nat Geo video of solstice and a document illustrating celestially what the solstice is and a document search as well as the usual dictation, yell and spell, and Round Robin.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Laurel arrived early and was waiting when I arrived just before 9:45 am; Lucas arrived shortly afterwards. Only one learner arrived before 10:00 am, but Laurel started right on time. While she was doing the alphabet sheet, two other learners arrived.
She incorporated strings of letter into the alphabet sheet along with the individual letters. She had a number of sentences for dictation about fireworks and the fourth of July. She also brought some fireworks for a “This is an Apple” like activity and she had a document search with images of some key vocabulary words from the dictations. The lesson ended with a video of the Schoolhouse Rock Fireworks song.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): MC decided to go a different route and talk about the 2018 World Cup. We had a total of 2 students at first and 2 more arrived maybe 30 after the class started. MC quickly adjusted lesson plan to meet the levels of the students. MC brought in a Brazilian soccer jersey in which we did a “This is a….”. Students had a great time connecting and laughing with each other during this activity. Other activities included dictations, round robin, listen and point, and a fun word search. One student ended up leaving early and students were rearranged. Class ended with a round robin asking students who they are rooting for in the world cup. Great class tonight.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): On this day, I flyered the whole complex, so I was there in plenty of time with stuff. We did get a few people, two children brought their mom, and two other children tagged along. It was interesting, but from the vantage point of today, they didn’t come back. It’s more than a month since this class happened that I’m updating the website.
