What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we are finally getting some of our old friends back.. almost everyone was familiar, except one newbie. A couple of our folks who have been coming a lot with me are really improving noticeably, which is very encouraging to see with this model. Although I worry a little what happens when less skilled people come. I brought the map today, and was surprised this group hadn’t really seen it before.. one of our classic modules but unfamiliar for folks here. Still, it also didn’t seem to be too challenging. Group wasn’t exactly rowdy but.. restless? couldn’t quite get them on the same page. But, good connection between folks, that was nice. Started off the class describing how I got to class, which was good until other folks came.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small group but one of our regulars came back. I think I really challenged them a lot, and it’s interesting.. the classes are small, like, they got smaller after the trip, and I’m not sure if it’s that I’m pushing them harder, or if they had become accustomed to the variety in the past? in any case, I’m not too worried that they will grow, but it’s fascinating and something to keep my eye on. We used the citizenship test and pointed to a page, and it seemed to be well received. Then we played schoolhouse rock three ring government, and this was well received. folks seemed pleased and surprised by the citizenship work.

oh! I started off with “x says that it’s cold outside.. ” and this was a really rough start. BUT – also a couple of the vietnamesse students are really making progress.. like, the fastest I’ve ever seen anyone. I’m pleased and amazed.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started at 5 after 3pm which is as close to on time as it gets. I handed out the list of 10 and had the interpreters translate it and then we did a listen-and-point with the sentences, the boys in the class were very enthusiastic about this. We then moved on to yell and spell with names. We did the “what are you good at?” in inquiry. I passed out the applications and had then look through them and ask the interpreters questions, after a few minuets we did a document search with the application. I then did a round robin with a dialogue then we took a 5min break. We then did role play and had each student have an exchange with someone else. We did content exploration with employment documents and the we did “This is a..” with different pictures. We then did choral response with the list of 10 and I explained each point and took questions.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The biggest class we’ve had in a long time. 1 more than Monday! It was a high energy class, and so that’s great. With little planning, it ended up being a map and dictation fest. The map was too small, and there was no easy way to use the large map with this size group and the arrangement of tables. But it’s wonderful to see the group growing so huge!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A bit of a bumpy start.. set up tables for 25, only 6 came. Issues with child care and all other sorts of things. I was a bit underdressed. It was cool that several people remembered me from Salon Comunal.. though I didn’t get the sense that they were completely excited about it. I was able to facilitate a little connection, but also concerned that this group of moms were like.. well, this isn’t going to work for me. We’ll see, but I’m guessing the best outcome is if they make some phone calls and we get a bunch of newer learners, and the character of the class shifts enough. Curious to see what happens Wednesday and Friday.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The thing that made this class really good was that Ivy brought a lot of cool stuff to work with to take to the park. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get anyone to come out with us. There was interest, and we got a maybe.. but then no. The thing that made this class not so good was that I lost the names and had to recover them by checking the loyalty cards. First time that’s happened to me!
