Santi and I took a Lyft to the school. We and two of the learners were locked out, and it took us a while to find Ian, but we started on time. We were joined by two more learners. We started with alphabet listen and point. I went really really fast, and the learners liked it. We did names, and then the title of the lesson, which Santi had picked.

Then we did a whole bunch of this is an apple with the first aid kit in the S.U.N. room and a flint and steel firestarter I had brought. We also did this is an apple with materials the firestarter is made of (this is wood, this is metal, this is manganese, this is leather). We did a document search of common household poisons, and I asked Santi what turpentine is. Santi looked up the word for turpentine in the languages of all the learners and told us it was a kind of paint thinner made from trees. Then Santi led a round robin about living through a huge long list of natural disasters and did some dictation and mini dialogues. The last round robin was about living through a volcanic eruption, and I made Santi ask me and then lead a dictation of my story of the 2004 St. Helens emissions and then a dictation of their 2004 St. Helens story. Santi had to change their answer from no to yes for living through a volcanic eruption, having seen it from a skyscraper in Portland. A learner asked what a skyscraper was, and we ended with a discussion of what it meant in all the learners’ languages.

Ben and I showed up around 5:40. And started working out a system of baseball signs. Santi showed up around 5:45. When most of the learners were there, Ben told them, in Spanish, that it was gonna be his second silent class. Then Santi asked him to repeat it in English, and he did.

At 6:00, Ben started signaling me, signing ASL letters and numbers (like 3 and 8) to do the alphabet listen and point. Ben had some great series of confusables, like a,h,8 and z,g,3,d, then fingerspelled his name and we did choral response, letter by letter. Then Santi and I orally spelled our names and I asked “What’s my name?” “What’s their name?” and then we did that with the learners with me asking what their names where and getting choral responses.

Then Ben cued me to say the title of the lesson, and Santi repeated it a bunch of times. Then Santi did whole part whole on the title. Ben cued me to start a dictation of “Taxes pay for military, healthcare, education, and other social services.” Santi found this sentence pretty funny had a lot of fun repeating it and doing whole part whole with wild inflections.

Ben had worked out a number-cue system with me, before 6:00, for a document search about what taxes pay for, so we handed out the docs (take one, pass ’em down). Then Ben would make the ASL sign for a number, and I would read that word or phrase in the document. Learners looked for the words and phrases. Santi helped with you got it’s. We finished with the last item in the document search just as it was time to leave.
