Lastly, students learned that today was May Day or International Workers’ Day. Overall, the students enjoyed the lesson and had a good understanding of what the labor movement was about.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with the alphabet sheet, using triplets and quads, which worked really well with the small group. Instead of Yell and Spell for the names, we spelled our names quickly and learners wrote them down, then repeated (all together and individually). This also let us do last names, which was new and exciting! We then used the Great outdoors word cloud and learners were able to engage with words and really practice pronounciation. We ended with a little bit of dictation and a map of regional parks. Overall, a fun and engaging lesson, which really took advantage of the small group to create individualized learning.

Ian was away at a training, and not on site this day. Consequently, the room was locked when we arrived, and the person in the office of this part of the school who knows what P*P*T is was out, with an administrative sub in their place. Amanda had horrible trafic difficulty; she arrived around 8:50 and managed to have a custodian called, who unlocked the room within 3 minutes of 9 am. (I can’t remember if it was 8:57 or 9:01 or 9:03.) The room was SUPER cold, having been locked and in the dark, with no central heat, all night and morning. I and several learners comented on how cold it was. Luckily, Amanda knew how to turn on the recirculation HVAC for this room, and soon it was very comfortable. While I was trying to get the room open, I saw a learner with an alphabet sheet in a page protector. Cara saw them too and knew them by name, but they did not come to class this day. Wheter this was becasue the room was locked, or they had not been planning to go anyway, I do not know.
We started with the alphabet and Amanda did some fun things, like adding the numeral 3 to C,Z,G. We spelled names and did a document search about the benefits to workers of unions. One learner seemed to be anti-union, or maybe they were disappointed with political suppression of/reactionism to unions. When Amanda read the phrase “Conditions for workers have improved over the years because of unions.” they said to me, under their breath “I don’t think so.” in English.
Then we did a survey about what P*P*T English, if any, these learners would like during the summer. I incorporated “take one and pass it down” while handing-out whiteboard markers, for the survey, and, later, loyalty cards. Amanda incorporated dictation and passing mini-dialogues between the learners while doing the survey. Then it was time for everyone to go away from there.

Good engagement and connection. Watched two videos and did document search and dictation and reading. Great class.

We were able to do a listen and point and have some really great visuals. We also did a listen and did physical response activity in regards to certain outdoor activities. Overall very fun and engaging class.

Lesson plan included a number of challenging, longer sentences adapted from a video about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. MC turned on subtitles for video which was great. Class dug in and tackled them. An article regarding the Burgerville unionization was used for the document listen and Point exercise.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small class of highly regular Tuesday night learners. MC was asked by one of the learners to spend time during class clarifying present vs. past tense. MC deftly incorporated fulfillment of this request into the lesson plan as appropriate. Lesson focused on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and it’s impact on the evolution of workers’ rights. Exercises included a wordsearch, video, dictation, listen and point using an article from the history channel related to the video. One learner brought food which she shared with the class. It was really good.

Lesson plan also included a Personal brainstorm lesson which challenged them to remember the 10 items on the Hiking essentials sheet. One of the learners who always brings joy and energy to the classes has a very impressive memory. Everyone laughed. The shadower was new to Kelly and appreciated working with speakers of Asian languages. It was alot of English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun, English, fun fun fun, laughing, then English.

Santi and I took a Lyft to the school. We and two of the learners were locked out, and it took us a while to find Ian, but we started on time. We were joined by two more learners. We started with alphabet listen and point. I went really really fast, and the learners liked it. We did names, and then the title of the lesson, which Santi had picked.
Then we did a whole bunch of this is an apple with the first aid kit in the S.U.N. room and a flint and steel firestarter I had brought. We also did this is an apple with materials the firestarter is made of (this is wood, this is metal, this is manganese, this is leather). We did a document search of common household poisons, and I asked Santi what turpentine is. Santi looked up the word for turpentine in the languages of all the learners and told us it was a kind of paint thinner made from trees. Then Santi led a round robin about living through a huge long list of natural disasters and did some dictation and mini dialogues. The last round robin was about living through a volcanic eruption, and I made Santi ask me and then lead a dictation of my story of the 2004 St. Helens emissions and then a dictation of their 2004 St. Helens story. Santi had to change their answer from no to yes for living through a volcanic eruption, having seen it from a skyscraper in Portland. A learner asked what a skyscraper was, and we ended with a discussion of what it meant in all the learners’ languages.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The regular Wednesday night learners were there. We were joined by a chocolate cake, made as a thank you for the learners who had brought food over the last few weeks, and a new shadower who was really great . Wednesday night crew is pretty advanced and MC dictated some rather complex sentences. Additional class time involved a document search and two short videos. The subject of tense continued to be a subtle theme. As always a very connected class.
