What happened:
One learner arrived before the shadower, Santiago, so that learner was over an hour early. Maybe they were just hanging-out in the library, but they were in the space where we do English when Santiago walked in. They and Santiago had a long chat about the various community programmes at Rockwood library, like the Spanish-language knitting club that Santiago is excited to attend for the first time this Saturday. The other four learners arrived between 1:45 and 1:55. We were excited to see a long-time learner who has been with us for years and years but whom we have not seen for one month and two days. We were also excited to meet the other shadowwer, Hannah.
We started with a dictation about why I moved to Oregon, fleeing the sparsely-treed hardpack badlands of Tuscon, Arizona. Santiago drew an amazing full-color picture of a saguaro cactus on the whiteboard with whiteboard markers and the learners thought about what a cactus is. Then we did some listen and point with my favorite poster of Willamette Valley native plants. We started with grand fir. When we got to Oregon grape, Santiago dictated four amazing facts about Oregon grape fruit (not to be confused with Oregon grapefruit), including that Oregon grape fruit is very sour. We finished with a Willamette-valley-specific ecology wordcloud listen and point.
The long-time learner I mentioned above said “ready”, as a joke, before I or either of the shadowers had picked anything in the wordcloud, but we made them run with it, after all the other learners had yelled “ready”. So the learner (who had made the joke) had to pick something from the wordcloud, and we all (including the other learners) pointed at that. Then we went around to all the other learners, each picking something in the wordcloud to point at. Class ended just as the final learner had picked something and we had all pointed and done a choral response.

Total Score: 23What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We arrived at 6:18 pm. I wrote the lesson plan 10 minutes before I left home. One learner, with their three children, left as we were handing out alphabet sheets and was not counted in the number of learners. Another learner was frustrated with being with learners of other levels and left around 6:50 pm and was counted in the number of learners. That learner did not want to collaborate with others, and energy improved after they left. One learner who stayed was a return learner who is at Rockwood a lot. The other three learners who stayed were first timers who all spoke the same language (different to the return learner) but did not know the other newbies of their same language. The return learner really carried the class much more than Santi or I, bringing great energy, modeling to newbies, and showing their paper to newbies.
We started with alphabet listen and point, then yell and spell names, then calling the lesson, and dictated Taxes are due April 17th. Then this is an apple with coin denominations 1¢ to 100¢ (Sacagawea dollar) using real coins. Santi brought great energy to this is an apple and throughout the class. The new learners and the return learner who stayed laughed a lot, especially during this is an apple. Did a TPR with finding differnt amounts of money (e.g. $11.25) in the pile of real coins on the table. Finished with a word find on a tax form and more laughing about “amount you owe” and “spouse filing jointly” etc..WebMaestrexKeymasterLesson Title: My Housing Story

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): nice group, it’s great that the class has grown.. it started off pretty solid, but got a little flat.. santi suggested that it was going into the dictation again. Jota noticed that I prevented two learners from coaching, stepping in front of them. Engagement was a little weaker than I’d have liked. This group may be ready for more creative production.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): told several housing stories.. the community land trust came up again. word cloud has a couple of duplicates. There was some expression about the politics of our class, in part because I accidentally passed out the Spanish versions. We didn’t collect testimony in this space though, and we will announce the meeting in following weeks.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Wow. what an incredible day. a rainy Sunday morning, with most people coming from outside the Lents area.. one person from Rockwood, one from Latino Connection.. and our friends Grupo Latitudes playing. We got to visit with Sydney from Portland Farmer’s Market, the organizing was challenging with lots of new helpers, but we just had a transcendant time identifying trees, going to Lents park with a brand new playground, we saw the goats, one learner from the good old days, I got to meet her son.. considering the challenges, the most successful. We didn’t even arrange transportation.. though $20 gift card makes a difference for sure!
