What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): First Wednesday class of the term. Three return learners and one new one. The new learner was at a lower level than the others which made it a little challenging. The original plan was to have colorful maps but we made due with black and white copies.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great group of learners. One new learner. The use of maps made us realize that some people have never seen a map before and may not know that blue represents water or green represents forests. Just an example that we can’t take things for granted. Activities got learners talking to each other.

What happened: I didn’t have much time to prepare and plan an MLK themed class due to working over-time that day so I chose Maps/Addresses as a) I have taught this topic many times so didn’t need to plan much and b) it’s always useful for non-native English speakers. AND I just saw that the theme for next month is going to be Maps/Addresses.. which is great because all 5 of the learners need a lot of practice with ordinal numbers, street names, address abbreviations and most importantly, saying/writing their own addresses. In fact, only 1 of them knew their address by memory; everyone else had to look at their ID’s. Class started a little slow, energy wasn’t very high but by the end, the flow was there. I noticed one learner getting a little frustrated with the ordinal numbers but I kept the pace at her level to ensure we didn’t lose her. Otherwise, nice group of ladies eager to learn :)

What happened: Class started with just 1 learner and the others trickled in, all arriving by about 15-20 after. We did alphabet practice, then yell and spell. A visual document was used to introduce vocab related to stormwater management to the learners. Next the MC handed out a more elaborate document with text that defined the different types of green streets in Portland. We worked with that for a bit via listen/find and then practiced a dialogue talking about the kinds of green streets we’ve seen in our neighborhoods. The last activity involved finding words on the word cloud that would be used for the game of bingo. All learners (and the couple kiddos in the room) seemed to really enjoy the game, especially since m&m’s were involved! Super high energy at the end, and overall, solid class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Little bit of a mix-up with DJ’s but worked out fine (that’s why Patrik gave himself a “3” for Preparation). The two newer learners are returning regularly, so the group is getting to know each other better. So great to see!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started with 2 students (one was new) and 3 more students came in about 20 minutes late. We looked at graphs and data about rainfall. Learners got into pairs and worked together to fill out a table of average rainfall per month. Gaston brought in a ruler so that learners could visualize how much rain we get in Oregon. There were a lot of different languages spoken between learners – English, Spanish, French, and Swahili.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had only 2 learners, one with very low proficiency. Kalin (shadowing and doing her dress rehearsal next week) and Sofia (regular volunteer) were very helpful. Class may have been less difficult if there had been more students who could have helped out with the one student who is having difficulty
