What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Last class. At end of class, we discussed continuing during the summer. Principal at Irvington may be willing to let us use that building. One of class members, Antonia, volunteered the use of her basement on 10th and Schuyler. Another, Kattia, her patio, also in that neighborhood. Class was open to having class at either of those places. Once a week, with Tuesdays the best night.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): things were hectic at the school tonight, with multi-culture day in the gym and Irvington Neighborhood Assoc in the library. We used room 108, which was fine.
The first 15-20 minutes of class we joined the multicultural events by watching Aztec dancers.
Told the students that next week’s Thursday class would be at St. Andrew and the following Thursday will be the last class for the summer at Irvington School.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): these students are very supportive of one another and very engaged. concept of class was good, as was the use of props (apple, garlic, pictures of vegetables). This also is a very diverse class culturally but at the same time, most learners seem to be at the same level. Higher level learners are very helpful with lower proficiency learners. As a sidenote, the family of one of the students, Shahida Shukur, was featured in WW this week. See page 22. A Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, via Malaysia.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 4 new students including a married couple and the mother of a student. Most showed writing proficiency but a lack of confidence and proficiency in oral communication. This was a gentle intervention class for Krysie, who rolled with Patrik’s punches well, and the class did not seem disturbed by the fact this was a teaching class for Krysie.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Zehreh, who started a few months ago with very little proficiency, is making great progress. Good to see her confidence. A newer student, Soledad, has markedly progressed since the first class and seems to have more confidence. Students liked the Beatles song “money” and, when we talked about the $20 bill and Andrew Jackson, also were into the Battle of New Orleans. Jaime was very helpful, as was Maria with Soledad and Fateh with Zehreh.
