This was the first day at a new venue, Irvington School. There was a lot going on, but Brooke kept the focus on the lesson. Lots of lower proficiency students. Very energetic. Students were recruited by the school and are parents and/or friends of elementary students at Irvington.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Second day of class. I met the students. One guys has a hard time with pronunciation when asking “How much does this cost”. and “It costs 10.99.
He says How much does this cost is” / It costs is 10.99″. So definitely needs to work on this pronunciation and in the way to says sentences correctly. I saw that the students need to practice more how to use the word “Do and Does”. Most of them.
Good class! Mark is a very friendly teacher.March 1, 2016 at 10:35 pm #7254Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The library door was locked when I got there, and after waiting and trying to call some key people, I finally found the janitor to let us in. There were 2 learners there when we first got in just before 6. We started with the alphabet and by the end of that activity, I think there were 9 or 10 there. And by the end of the class, all of the 11 who came to the first class last week, were there. Good sign! After yell n spell, we worked with some basic family vocabulary, and a dialogue about how many siblings we have. Off to a great start. The SImpsons family tree activity was a little shaky but I think it was mostly me worrying/wondering if it was boring for them, weird, or they were just having a hard time with it. So I didn’t abandon it, I just modified from pronunciation and listen/find to a writing/dictation activity which really helped a lot. We ended with a quick review of the sibling dialogue and a pretty fun TRP. I’m really glad Benjamin was there, as there is 1 learner in particular who really struggles. We will definitely want to have her next to the most advanced learners in the event that there is no DJ/assistants on a given night.. she really wants to learn!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A great class, very engaged throughout- students were laughing often, while still staying focused and on task. Dictation/Dialogue of simple sentences/Q&A based off some Deck of Prof cards seemed perfectly challenging. (i.e. What does Maria do? Maria works as a housekeeper.) The sentence “Sacagawea works hard for her money,” got quite a rise out of people and her name alone was an extra little dictation challenge that the students got a kick out of. We did a lot of round robin, so lots of speaking practice. As an interlude, we watched the video/listened to the song “She works hard for her money”, then dictated the chorus.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Benjamin did great for his dress rehearsal- and it was a solid class with fantastic energy. Alphabet sheet and names went smoothly, then a lot of dictation and ‘listen and point’ with the Simpson family tree. Mid-way we did a little NSEW TPR to break up the class, which seemed to work well. Ended with focus on the song ‘we are family’- listened and read lyrics, choral response, then dictation and singing along all together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a bit of a slow start with only three learners showing up by the start time. Four came later during names. It was a small class over all, which we attributed to the weather. Regardless, the connection and energy were good. The instructors worked well together and the learners appeared to be having fun.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a small group of 6 today, possibly a result of the warm weather. We started with 2 but the others arrived a few minutes into class, and only one arrived after doing names. All the students seemed familiar/knew each other’s names. Some of the dialogue we practiced with was challenging and composed of full sentences, e.g., “Robert Kennedy was President Kennedy’s brother,” and after struggling to say it once and getting the “What?” response, everyone laughed about having to say it again. Good energy/connection throughout.
