What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Major points down for little preparation and almost a week late on the update. I can’t really even remember what the class was like! just that we mixed our native speakers in with the learners, so everyone kind of had their own mini teacher. I cut up some of the birds and we worked with those this is a red breasted nuthatch.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 1 new student and a total of 8. We studied an in-depth list of important vocabulary terms one needs to understand when dealing with a landlord. Students recited the terms and wrote them down. They were later used in a series of dialogues based around the same theme, housing discrimination, tenant rights, etc. Class ended with a document search of a Fair Housing brochure. Students came from a wide range of various backgrounds and abilities and were thoroughly engaged.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well, I broke my toe today.. it was a key day because Monica from Nadaka was there. But I voice dictated a lesson to Ivy, they wrote it down, and did it. Ivy said her biggest challenge was not managing the learners, but managing the other assistants. Monica kept everyone engaged with wolf and coyote pelts, and there were two kids to boot. I gave myself a high poise, just for being able to keep the class on track from the ER.. though it could have been better supported.. one day!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began around 12:13 p.m., due to waiting for learners to arrive. After our normal warmup activities we had dictation & question & answer (round robin) followed by a W-7 tax form document search. Class ended with sentence scrambles, where the correctly spelled words of the sentences were presented in the wrong order & the learners figured out the correct order. Each learner took a turn writing the correct word order for one of the sentences on the board, great writing practice. The learners encouraged & helped each other, & there was much laughter & camaraderie. Class ended on time at 2 p.m.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a good class. Franz was very confident and he maintained a good level of energy and engagement during the class. After the first 20 minutes a new learner arrived and the class had to slow down a bit because she was a slow learner but we made her feel welcome and encouraged neighbor learners to help as well. About 10 to 7:30 we had done all the the activities on the lesson plan, including the Listen & Do which was especially fun, and then tried again a little of an Alphabet, Listen and Point until the end.

Monica tried a very practical drill with the different types of coins, adding them and getting different values. The dialog was simple enough and fun. There was a very good level of connection which was excellent to allow smooth transitions during the activities and an enjoyable class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began on time and ended a couple of minutes late, due to our rather buggy discussion. First came Alphabet Listen & Point, followed by a variation of Yell & Spell in which first and last names were spelled quickly. After dictation of lesson title (“Stop Bugging Me!”), we studied more insects on a handout. A round robin came next and we asked each other if we’d ever eaten an insect. Most people said no but Jane has actually eaten ants, bees, caterpillars and grasshoppers. She plans to bring some in next week if she can find them at the store. A great sense of camaraderie prevailed as assistants and learners worked together, encouraging each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class went really well. I think this mod will have lots of fun activities as we work our way through it. Our learners today were fairly equal in their abilities which made for a lot of positive group work. The class was engaged the whole time. Christine was an absolutely fantastic assistant. She used to teach English in France and was a French teacher in the US for 20+ years. She was a natural in the classroom and thoroughly enjoyed the methods and material. She has very good instincts in the PPT classroom. We did a few new activities with numbers and the pictures on US money. We talked about George Washington, Barak Obama, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Began with alphabet sheets, moved to tools (screwdrivers, hammer, mallet, crescent wrench), asked class members to name and repeat names of each tool; later we played a game: Sam began with stating that he had one particular tool in mind and then asked the class members to determine which tool he was thinking about, by asking questions, such as: Is it metal? Is it plastic? Does it have red, yellow, or black on it?
Later Sam had posted word cards on a board at the front of the room and would state a word chosen from the left to match with a word on the right. Sam modeled this and then he asked each class member to do this in turn.

This class began and ended on time. We had 1 new learner. During Alphabet Listen & Point, in addition to letters Jane practiced numbers with the learners. After Spell 5 and Yell & Spell Jane dictated the title of the lesson. She then dictated the story of attending camp as a child, wanting the insect badge, and earning it by correctly identifying various bugs the nature teacher found and showed her. Then Jane modeled with Ivy, who put plastic insects into Jane’s hand for her to feel since Jane is blind. Then each learner
got a turn. One learner would close her eyes and another would pass her the insect, showing her by feel different parts of the bug. Jane and assistants helped learners name the various parts of the insect. A round robin about going to camp followed and class ended with a TPR activity (stretching exercise). There was much laughter and camaraderie and the learners worked together, encouraging & helping each other.
