Score: 42 (Preparation: 7; Technique: 6; Engagement: 8; Connection: 7; Poise: 7; Reflection: 7).
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This class began around 12:08, due to waiting for learners to arrive. After warmup activities plus lesson title dictation Joshua tried a new true-false activity. A true-false sentence was handed out, one at a time, each on a separate page. Photos were shown to accompany some of the sentences, keeping the learners’ interest and adding a visual dimension. The learners were very engaged, thinking about each
sentence. They helped and encouraged each other.
A great sense of camaraderie prevailed. Class ended on time after a short exercise (Total Physical Response) activity.May 11, 2015 at 7:44 pm #5567WilLIAM SeeSpectatorLesson Title: Today’s lesson is “The Union Label.”

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Zehreh, who started a few months ago with very little proficiency, is making great progress. Good to see her confidence. A newer student, Soledad, has markedly progressed since the first class and seems to have more confidence. Students liked the Beatles song “money” and, when we talked about the $20 bill and Andrew Jackson, also were into the Battle of New Orleans. Jaime was very helpful, as was Maria with Soledad and Fateh with Zehreh.

What happened:
Our class filled up slowly with lots of new people filtering in over the first 30 minutes. We had a lot of lower lever learners than normal which made the work go a little slower than normal, but it encouraged a lot of working together. We did several dictations, word scrambles, and worked with Presidents names and their pictures on money. Jane also brought a mechanical Barak Obama doll that spoke quotes from Obama’s speeches. We used it in a dictation.May 18, 2015 at 4:58 pm #5590Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: May 13, 2015, Rockwood Library

Score: 38 (Preparation: 5; Technique: 6; Engagement: 7; Connection: 6; Poise: 6; Reflection: 8).
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This class began and ended on time. Lesson title dictation followed Alphabet Listen & Point and Yell & Spell. Jane brought 5 fake insects which were incorporated into the lesson. Every learner identified each insect, then passed it on to the next learner. After a short stretch break (Total Physical Response, TPR), a round robin followed. The learners asked each other if they had ever eaten a bug. A couple of short stories about people eating bugs were dictated. There was a lot of laughter and camaraderie in this class. The learners were very engaged in encouraging and helping each other. Several learners want to return to class on Friday, if their work schedules permit.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a very large class for Rockwood Monday afternoons. Patrik led students in various round robin dialogues centered around the themes of jobs and income. All levels of students were fully engaged and enjoyed helping out fellow students tackle the new vocabulary and practice. We ended class with a listen and do acting out working actions as well as writing down and singing the lyrics to If I Had a Hammer.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Lots of amazing energy with Laura Kutner from Trash for Peace and Monica from Nadaka Nature park in the room with us. We started off with butterflies, but then realized we had these amazing bug larvae! That was cool. Some real progress with some of the learners today, we could really see it. A little role confusion with Monica, I didn’t quite make it clear enough exactly how it should go.. which is partly because I didn’t fully write out a lesson either. We will do birding next month!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was very fun and interesting to be the DJ in a silent class for the MC. It helps train nerves to always remain calm even though we face the worst scenario in a class. We had to deal with the absence of voice to communicate with Joshua but we relied on miming, body language and on a very detailed lesson plan. Engagement was really good.
