What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Interesting class. Though I had no plan prepared, we worked with the Native Plants sheet. Bess from volunteer services with the library was there. A nice group – there was a lot of multilingual cross talk – a Chinese speaking man and a Spanish speaking man were really working together. Lots of bubbling connection, and helping. A little friendly competition with listen and point. And we asked everyone if they wanted to take a trip to the Nadaka Nature Park – everyone said yes – we’ll see if that really indicates participation!

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) =8Total Score:39
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with about 5 learners, by the end there were 10- most came within the first 10-15 minutes. The usual mixed level, multi-lingual group, mostly Spanish speakers. Higher level learners were very helpful with others during dictation activities. Mark started with the lesson title, then a Beatles song, first a verse/line was played, then Mark repeated it, then learners wrote it down. This took a good 30 minutes. Then we moved on to the introduction of a w-2 form, first they were passed around using the ‘This is a” dialogue and then a dictation explaining what the form is, what its used for, etc.. We did a TPR to get the energy flowing and then ended with a listen/find with words on the form. Overall, good class for an especially dry module. It’s hard to make this one fun/interesting, but at least a few learners appeared to be interested in the topic.. and mark did a great job with presentation of the topic!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This was an atypical class as we had only two students but that was not a problem since Sheila did a great job boosting and maintaining the energy level of the class. Glemn was really helpful doing positive reinforcement and after class feedback. Listen & Do activity was especially fun and engaging; doing the funky chicken was hilarious.March 11, 2015 at 2:39 pm #4865Arien LorenzoSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Mark prepared very well for the class. He brought interesting materials, played such an amusing song which emcompassed the title and focus of the lesson. It worked perfectly as an energy booster and a connection bridging tool. We had a weird moment, though, when one learner who had arrived late, left the class and did not return. He later told me that class for being too fast for him. I apologized and tried to persuade him but he said he was not going back to the class, that we would attend a different time. What I think is that he was probably having a difficult day because he was next to a fast learner, copying from him. I chose to move away to another side of the table and let his classmate help him but we failed to notice his body language. Other than that class was smooth, learners laughed, worked together and seemed to enjoy.

Score: 41 (preparation: 6; technique: 7; engagement: 8; connection: 7; poise: 6; reflection: 7).
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This class began on time. Both assistants arrived early to set up the classroom. They discussed their role in the class with Jane and as a result the class went quite smoothly. We had one new learner. Two dictations each with a round robin question and answer followed the usual warmup activities (Alphabet Listen & Point, Spell 5, & Yell & Spell). Barbara & Ivy showed plant posters for a Listen & Point activity, greatly enjoyed by the learners. There was much laughter and enthusiasm. Jane attempted to show the Bosky Dell video but discovered after class that she had no Internet connection. She learned much from this experience. Jane improvised with another question and answer activity. Class ended at 1:55 with a short group of stretching exercises.

Total Score: 41Class went well despite the struggle that this module has been for us. We began with the standard warm up activities – alphabet listen & point, confusable rhythms, yell & spell, etc. We moved on into the lesson title, a Q & A, some dictation, and a new activity that Jane came up with: Sentence scramble. The simple sentence was scrambled with the words out of order. We had to rely on certain clues such as where the capital letter that started the sentence began, and where the punctuated last word was. As a class we put the words in order 1st numbering the words on the board in the order it should go. Then class members took turns writing the sentence on the board with the words in the correct order. This was definitely an intermediate to advanced activity. Fortunately most of the class was intermediate level. It was a little bit easing for the learners because they didn’t have to worry about spelling. They only had to copy the words down onto the board. The first try took me a minute to figure out how best to support the learners. But they all seemed to understand the activity and I was very surprised at how well they could do the word order -a somewhat complex grammatical activity, but they all seemed to get it for the most part. We ended with a TPR.
The classroom environment was very lively and pleasant. Everyone seemed to feel at home. One new learner who came was very well supported and really enjoyed class. I had a great after-class chat with him. He is excited to come back. He only arrived in the US 2 weeks ago.
There’s another learner who has been coming regularly for the last 2 months and had no previous English experience. Today it was wonderful to hear her reading with better pronunciation and confidence than I’ve ever seen. It was very rewarding.March 16, 2015 at 7:56 pm #4880Samuel DiBiaseSpectatorLesson Title: When Irish Eyes are Smiling

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with a handful of students. More trickled in over the next 20 minutes for a total of 8. Mark came prepared with materials and activities related to St. Patrick’s Day. Hands on materials included shamrocks and leprechaun hats. Students listened and wrote lyrics to An Irish Lullaby. Some students struggled with unfamiliar vocabulary. Students were engaged and class went well, ending on time with a cookie treat brought in by Mark.

We started the class with three completely new learners, and by last 40-45 minutes we had three more new students! The use of realia realia worked wonderfully motivating and engaging students. There was a variety of levels present but the higher ones were very friendly and cooperative and even though the weaker ones struggled, they did not feel down but showed enthusiasm, smiled all the time and repeated the lines over a over until they felt more comfortable with their pronunciation. At the end Mark shared a delishious treat with the students: white and green cookies to celebrate St. Patrick’s and even shamrock napkins!March 18, 2015 at 10:35 pm #4886WebMaestrexKeymasterLesson Title: Plant Invasion

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A decent class today, though it was a little tough to get going. We used the invasive species.. lots of new folks, many lower skill, and also set up three tables with smaller groups.. Switched people around several times to find the right combination of people.. overall a decent feeling and good engagement with material, but it felt like it took a lot of work.

Class began around 12:10, due to extra time needed to arrange the room and to instruct several first-time assistants. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell we had lesson title, numbers and sentence dictation. The sentences were included in a short video on military spending which we watched several times. Next came a document word search using a W4 tax form. Class ended on time with a short TPR (Total Physical Response, standing exercises).

This is a difficult module, especially with many lower level learners in the class. Sam did a good job with the material (1040 form) and his rhythm and pace were excellent. Higher proficiency learners were very helpful.
Note that the library doesn’t open until noon on Monday. The experience is for the class to start late (about 12:10) and for learners to come in until 12:20-12:30.March 23, 2015 at 11:40 pm #4898Arien LorenzoSpectatorDate of Class: 03/23/2015

We had a rather small class as it has become usual for Mondays, but we were happy to welcome three new learners. Sheila was excelent: she created the environment for a multigrade class and peer teaching. There was a slow learner but we did not loose track of her, provided constant positive reinforcement and made her feel more confident. Glemn was absolutely helpful as always, he took care of making the needed loyalty cards. Celina did a great job reinforcing learners, modeling sentences and providing timely feedback. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): small class tonight but lively. Arien used iPad to play Guthrie’s Take You for a Ride in My Car, continuing the theme from two weeks ago. This You-Tube version was helpful because there were illustrations and words as the song played. Kelsie and Matt (1st time) were shadowing. More proficient learners were very helpful with lower proficiency learners.
