What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was nice to see folks again.. small attendance at the beginning, but got up to a respectable size. All returnees, and several folks from before. A number of low skill folks who worked very hard. I felt like I did a lot of pushing today, more that I really liked, and I always feel like folks wince a little bit.. but then we come out of it on the other side, and people are laughing and working together.. Much respect to one learner who always reminds me of the indigenous languages in the classroom when I go around and say things in Spanish, Russian, etc.. There were Mixtec and Maya Kiche speakers in class today. Ivy and Barbara stuck around for a really nice debrief.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was my no-lesson-plan class. It went really well actually. After the standard round of warm up activities of Alphabet Listen & Point and Yell & Spell, we used materials from previous weeks including a listen and point activity with the brochures we received from Ivy. We also did dialogues around parks and hiking and nature. We worked with nature vocabulary and asked questions like, “Do you like wildlife?” with responses of “Yes I do, no I don’t.” Despite this being one of my no-lesson-plan classes, it went really well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Overall, class went well, but it didn’t go absolutely smoothly. We had to kind of juggle some things. Class couldn’t start on time because the room was occupied by a different activity. We didn’t get started until 12:15/12:20. Over all, it was a learning experience for me and Jane to work together. On one hand we want Jane to be the best she can with what she can do and we both are trying to explore more ways to expand her role. We struggled in executing some modified activities. Yell & spell we tried saying all the letters of the names without the repeat of letters and just have the choral response of names. It was confusing for the learners because of the expectations of this activity that had been set previously. We discussed ideas of how we can do better next time. We also had some confusion around the classroom set up and supplies -it was missing the board which we needed for a word scramble game.
That being said, we did a pretty good job of rolling with it. The dialogues were great. and we continued working on This Land Is Your Land -which the class seems to really enjoy overall. All learners were well supported and worked together to get through the activities.February 16, 2015 at 5:03 pm #4773Ben Citalán MacarioSpectatorLesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class with a focus on spices! Learners were generally at a intermediate level besides one new learner who was at a very low level which made writing activities challenging. But, he had a lot of support from the learner next to him which was extremely helpful. They had a lot of opportunity to practice speaking, and we leaned a lot about a variety of spices; what they’re used for, what spices are used in what kinds of dishes, etc.. It was really cool that there was a nutrition class right before our class so the folks from that program left little fruit cups that they had prepared. Very fitting for todays theme of food/in the kitchen. No spices were used though ;)
We had a pretty good after class reflection but didn’t quite finish up since we had to leave by 8…February 20, 2015 at 8:36 am #4787WebMaestrexKeymasterLesson Title: Our Animal Friends

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): hm! One of the highest scores I’ve given myself.. Nice large group, though we’re missing some regulars. Several new folks bogged it down a little bit, but still quite nice. Ivy pointed out that the hiking thing is a concept that’s not really available to most of our learners, and that working with “do you go to the park” actually makes a stronger connection. Worth thinking about whether or not it’s worth it to explore unfamiliar concepts, especially if they’re very common; or stick with more familiar concepts.February 23, 2015 at 2:09 pm #4824Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: February 20, 2015, Rockwood Library

This class began shortly after 12:05, due to organizing the room and arrival of several learners simultaneously. We had one new learner. Patrik attended & coached Joshua for his gentle intervention. After Alphabet Listen & Point, then yell & Spell US maps were given to each learner. All learners pointed to abbreviations as state names were called out. Dictation about the location of various national parks & monuments came next, & photos of these places were shown to the class. A festive atmosphere was created when one of the learners presented the class with pastries to commemorate the Chinese new Year. The learners wrote down the chorus of “This Land Is Your Land” & sang along with even more confidence than last week. This class ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A small group, but a lot of amazing. Donna was awesome to have in the class, and she really intuitively gets a lot of the techniques we use. She’s a teacher! We learned that one of our learners is connected to one of our assistants; a learner who hung out with us a couple of years back came back, and another learner actually works at Bridgetown! Lots of laughing, maybe among the most good feeling classes I’ve ever had. There was a moment of complete cracking up. Really, really nice.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was an amazing class.. we had three people from MetroEast community media, and the County media person for immigrants and refugees – and of course, Barbara was there too, rock solid. Though it was awkward at times, we had a good size group, and we were able to get everyone’s hands on the cameras. I’m still working with hands on techniques for this kind of situation, and we had a lot of newcomers – and high profile ones, too, which had to be managed and given ad hoc training. But it was a great community connection space.. one of the library folks was like, oh.. it’s like advertising! I corrected her, no more like outreach and community engagement.. but essentially, she realized what we’re doing is not just about an English class, but bringing the real world to the learners. Looking forward to more and more and more like this!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began the class with the standard Alphabet Listen & Point. Arien did well with it, but naturally is still figuring out his pace and how to read the class in that activity. At the end of class during our follow up, Arien said he was concerned that he was going too fast or too slow at times. Really it was just a matter of getting a rhythm down and knowing when he needs to push forward on his speed and when to change directions – Naturally that will come quick with just a little more time. Arien was attentive to the seating and acknowledging who what sitting where. The class was a little smaller than normal. The tables and chairs were arranged so that everyone was working closely together. There was a little bit of an issue with one slower learner. We worked hard to make sure she was supported well, but we worked to make sure we didn’t draw too much attention to her. Le is a great assistant. She interacted very well with the learners. We moved on and did an activity with map listen and point. We used to state abbreviations map and had Wes and Jane call out state names. We also did a state name vocabulary dictation. On the more difficult state names, Jane spelled out the state names slowly so everyone could get the right answer and/or check their work and share answers. We also did several Q & A dialogues about National Parks/Monuments: The Statue of Liberty, Volcanoes National Park, Arches National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Mt. Rushmore. The class enjoyed the photos we used to go with each Q & A. We also did an activity of, “Have you ever been to _____?” with “Yes I have/No I haven’t.” For Arien’s dress rehearsal, it went really well. He was open to allowing his assistants to support him as well as open to reading what the class was offering back. With a little more exposure, I think Arien will be a fantastic asset to PPT. He is very invested in the learners and he wants to do each and every step with dedicated intention and accuracy.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Large class with four new students. Good mix. I’m learning that its a good idea to separate family members and to position higher level learners with lower level learners. This is a boring subject, but good for vocabulary and pronunciation practice. We discussed W-4s and W-7s ( ITINs), withholding taxes, and some general principles of filing taxes. Next week, I think we should continue with 1099s, W-4s, and maybe start looking at 1040EZs. We started the class by playing Taxman by the Beatles. We might repeat that in coming weeks.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): So interesting! Last week was one of the best classes I’ve ever experienced. This week.. one of the more challenging. There were two main reasons. We had a learner who is very low skill and shy.. but she’s been around, she’s working on it, but it’s still a struggle – and she speaks Arabic. The other was that Alain, our new assistant – he’s still a little new, and his English needs a little brushing up, and to develop his facilitation habits. Very eager, helpful guy! The group was small, so the differences in the group make a bigger impact. People’s phones kept ringing and one learner left the class for 20 minutes. Another left early. And with Small Talk, it’s kind of these phrases like – what’s up? They seem pretty easy. I’m also always surprised though, that people do find them interesting to cover. One learner was like.. I’m so happy you go over these basic things, they never do that at Mt Hood.. she seemed truly appreciative and inspired. and her Spoken English is pretty good, too. Oh! also a familiar old friend came back! I almost forgot about her!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we started 15 minutes late because we had only one student. Mark was chatting with the student then a librarian came and asked us if we could move to the small room because they needed the big room. According to Mark it was a difficult class to teach because we had a small number of students, in addition we had a student who was struggling with writing but I think Mark did a good job handling that situation. Mark basically filled the awkward time of silence with asking other students to repeat what they have written to each other. Great class!
