What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a super large group in the small room. Things would have worked better in the large room. Lots of moving chairs and interrupting the flow of class, not to mention the hazards this creates in event of emergency or fire.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Yani’s intervention class with Patrik. We practiced asking our neighbor’s names and telling others what we found out. We did a document search on “pocket neighborhoods”. Class ended with a listen and do. 8 students was a small class for Midland and with all the assistants, everyone had plenty of help.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had four new students in class today. Everyone seemed to enjoy this class and all learners were engaged, especially in the dialogue which included sarcasm, sassiness and a negative outcome.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class attendance was low. We were in the small room and had great assistance from Jack and Ivy. Stevie led the group in learning vocabulary of local neighborhood businesses and establishments. We practiced a dialogue and wrapped up class brainstorming why we’d frequent such places.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a very enthusiastic group of learners today. They are really getting in the swing of things and taking the initiative to help one another and practice vocabulary and dialogue without any prompting. There were lots of social interactions/ conversations in English between different cultures happening in this class. We finished with a search of a downtown map, finding destinations and naming their cross streets.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a very lively and energetic class. Learners took the initiative to help one another spell and pronounce vocabulary words around the theme of hiking. We practiced a complicated dialogue employing varying strategies until everyone was comfortable reciting it in front of the class. Class ended with a lot of movement, Stevie led us in acting out and reciting incidences one would encounter when on a hike.

We finished up by finding items in a New Seasons flyer. We had a very full class at 17 with a lot of new learners from various backgrounds, an enthusiastic group. Our returning students are showing significant progress.

We did a document search of street and park names on a map of Portland. We stood up and got physical with finding directions and walking in directions. We had one new student and a medium sized class for Midland. Students were engaged and helping one another.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a very large class for Rockwood Monday afternoons. Patrik led students in various round robin dialogues centered around the themes of jobs and income. All levels of students were fully engaged and enjoyed helping out fellow students tackle the new vocabulary and practice. We ended class with a listen and do acting out working actions as well as writing down and singing the lyrics to If I Had a Hammer.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a very full room with 16 students. Julie led class through a dialogue discussing what we like to cook. A student shared/ dictated a traditional recipe of spinach pie and students wrote it down. We finished class with a game of memory involving kitchen vocabulary. A higher level student came up with his own method of helping others that went quite well. It was a good class with most if not all students showing recognizable progression over previous weeks.

We studied an in-depth list of important vocabulary terms one needs to understand when dealing with a landlord. Students recited the terms and wrote them down. They were later used in a series of dialogues based around the same theme, housing discrimination, tenant rights, etc. Class ended with a document search of a Fair Housing brochure. Students came from a wide range of various backgrounds and abilities and were thoroughly engaged.

Eight learners were present at the start with four more joining shortly thereafter. Julie led class in a listen and point with the publication, Garden Smart Oregon. That was followed by round robin dictation on the native Oregon Salmonberry. Class ended upbeat with the song, The Needs of a Plant.

Mark came prepared with materials and activities related to St. Patrick’s Day. Hands on materials included shamrocks and leprechaun hats. Students listened and wrote lyrics to An Irish Lullaby. Some students struggled with unfamiliar vocabulary. Students were engaged and class went well, ending on time with a cookie treat brought in by Mark.
