Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Alphabet sheets, objects from the kitchen, Sugar Cookie Recipe, Loyalty Cards, Measuring Cups/Spoons

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The smaller-than-expected class with mostly new people (All new in the beginning) allowed for much more repetition and focus than usual. After alphabet and names, a good deal of time was spent on kitchen utensil vocab (based on the real kitchen objects I brought) and then a dialogue about picking out/handing each other those various items. Lots of around-the-room and engagement and standing/moving around the table. Using a recipe as a document search then proved a great transition to reviewing measurement fractions- writing, saying and identifying with the measuring cups/spoons. Great class overall!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a small class of 5 students. It was Krysie’s second time teaching and she was a bit nervous. Because we had 2 assistants and me as a DJ, we all were paired up with the students to help them better navigate through the activities. We had a lot of fun with the Listen/Point activity. Krysie did a good job!

We had a dialogue about borrowing and measuring one cup of oats. We ended with 20 questions using kitchen utensils. This was my first time without a DJ, so it was a little challenging, but the assistants were very helpful and the learners were enthusiastic!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good energy and decent focus. After alphabet we did a similar listen and point with ordinal numbers and fractions. We reviewed some vocabulary of utensils and food, as well as a dialogue about a recipe, before then actually making the recipe with said utensils and food, with the Ss in two groups. Afterwards we all ate the food together and did dialogue practice around questions about flavor, like/dislike, etc.

Just to clarify, the module for Feb. 25 was “In the Kitchen”, and the lesson was “Don’t bite off more than you can chew”. We enjoyed making and eating an easy snack mix, and we sang the song, “If I Knew You Were Coming I’d Have Baked a Cake”. I normally end my classes with a song, and I think the learners now expect and enjoy that!
