What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It took me a couple of days to update this class, so the reflection is faded a little bit. It was a nice large class, we had just enough handouts, I was putting together a lesson plan right at the end, but most importantly, this group is really starting to gel. .There’s a lot of laughing, people are calling each other by their names.. it’s really coming together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Largeish group.. several new people came back, which was cool. Some surprising folks too.. and then, it looks like every class we get new random people, it’s creating a different dynamic with our classes, because we kind of have to integrate new people all the time. So, no tiny classes, but the classroom culture takes some work to develop. Laid out some of the Deck of Professions and used them.. we walked around the table, which was kind of neat, though the pointing activity wasn’t as good as it could be because of the table arrangement.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not a bad class. positive feedback from some regulars, and really seeing their improvement. One person walked out who was new.. also forgot to get the name of another new person. This class felt like it was going so slow, dictation after dictation.. and I really think the larger room has something to do with that different feel. The two tables were somewhat language segregated at the beginning, but I mixed folks up later in the class, and they liked that. Will do that a little more with this group, or mix them up more at the beginning.

David struggled a little bit with how to move the kitchen utensils around the room, as well as the peanut butter song. Names warm up was nice. I’ve forgotten a lot because we couldn’t update the website, and it’s been nearly a week now since this class happened.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Incredibly difficult class with special equipment and a special guest. Svetlana brought this amazing Watershed contraption that was a really cool centerpiece.. but the arrival of 4 people with quite low skill level really threw the group off. We moved rooms, which was the right thing to do – but setting up the room itself was complicated on the fly, as well as the demonstration. But we did manage to do the demo, and it made the point.. and people were intrigued by the content and the delivery. If it wasn’t for the fact that we had such cool stuff to work with, that would have kept the technique score lower. The table arrangement made it difficult to move people around and get the right mixture of higher and lower skills. Very likely that we should work with the larger room if at all possible, and set the tables up well in advance. Curious to see how next week works.

Class went well with 3 new students. There was a disconnect between the listen and point sheet (an ad for a market, looked to be from the 50s or 60s) and the topic, Green Streets, but Ramin used that prop effectively. Students very helpful to one another. Very upbeat class and many students thanked the teachers personally afterwards.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A decent class, but a low score due to several things.. no plan, an assistant that I forgot was going to be there, Robert cancelled day of, almost lost the names of the learners, and Liz was pretty nervous (though she did great!). I just felt like I over did it a little bit, without much substance. One learner was very often befuddled and then another came late who was in a similar state; one of the learners was pretty advanced and had sort of a bored look, but she was helping her friends out. It was interesting to compare pets, though, which is what it turned into – Liz has lots of pets, we looked at pictures, etc. Also, it was very interesting to find out that some of our learners came from Community Works Project which skidded its way into my consciousness in several meetings.

Ann came and surprised me, though it was really great to have her there. One learner’s anxiety and learning style makes her a little disruptive, but she was calming down with some attention and firm guidance. Also, because we are updating the website with new tools, I was nearly a week late with posting this reflection.
