What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Being a DJ for this class was very exciting for me given that I enjoy new and fresh experiences. This was mine and Patrik’s first time working with this particular group so most things were fairly new for us. I’d never worked with as many Vietnamese learners as I had this evening so it once again broadened my perspective. Patrik made the class fun and engaging by being over the top in his demonstrations and directions and by being welcoming to all of the students.

A lot of learners with speakers of Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese and Chinese. We had Svetlana from the city of Portland to help us out and bring in some new vocabulary as well as present some information for the green streets module which we unfortunately didn’t have time for. Overall there was good connection and in spite of some improvisation towards the end of class, it was a good class for this new site. Space is tight and the class will need some fine tuning, but exciting things are going to be happening here!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Incredibly difficult class with special equipment and a special guest. Svetlana brought this amazing Watershed contraption that was a really cool centerpiece.. but the arrival of 4 people with quite low skill level really threw the group off. We moved rooms, which was the right thing to do – but setting up the room itself was complicated on the fly, as well as the demonstration. But we did manage to do the demo, and it made the point.. and people were intrigued by the content and the delivery. If it wasn’t for the fact that we had such cool stuff to work with, that would have kept the technique score lower. The table arrangement made it difficult to move people around and get the right mixture of higher and lower skills. Very likely that we should work with the larger room if at all possible, and set the tables up well in advance. Curious to see how next week works.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was fun to have Rosa there, and Suad made a huge difference – she came in and we were able to communicate with two of the Somali folks, and hopefully they will keep coming.. I’m not optimistic, because I think their first few experiences were not feeling good – too much chaos and no ability to communicate. I was in and out of the class, and it still was not quite as on point as it could be. The reduced size of the group definitely made things easier, but we’ll see how well it’s going to stick next week. It could go any way..

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was another large class. We had several new students with us, some of which were newer ESL learners. We also had 3 assistants today, Ciara, Theodora, and Emma. They were a great help and caught on quickly with the techniques we use in class. There was a lot of group work and encouragement today. We didn’t have the name cards on site unfortunately, so I won’t be able to upload the learners’ last names.

    Total Score: 23

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Definitely one of the lower scores I’ve given myself. The class wasn’t as bad as the numbers might seem, but there were significant challenges. We had amazing partners, and under such circumstances, I should have prepared better.. I arrived about 15 minutes before, a little out of sorts. We had extra amazing materials, and I really didn’t have a good idea for it, with the large Green Streets floor display. The set up in the big room was an adjustment for people, because they’re used to the better lit room with the large table. I had to move people around a lot. One good thing – a learner from another class left unhappy, but she came to this one.. she was really nice, and it was helpful that Svetlana was there to say some nice words on my behalf. On top of that, there were some challenges with the space – someone else wanted to set up for the next day, and we weren’t told. These are all fairly normal things, but they combine to make an uneven experience. Still, time went by fast, and after about 45 minutes, folks started loosening up. I feel amazed that we still have such a good following with several chaotic elements. I think the vietnamese speakers really feel like they can benefit from the pronunciation practice, and that’s where we’re aiming.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class was interesting. There were about five new students all of whom had solid beginner level English. A few students arrived late and the room was slightly small for the class size but overall, the students were stretched and challenged by the lesson plan and Mary Louise did a good job of keeping students of all levels engaged.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It took me a couple of days to update this class, so the reflection is faded a little bit. It was a nice large class, we had just enough handouts, I was putting together a lesson plan right at the end, but most importantly, this group is really starting to gel. .There’s a lot of laughing, people are calling each other by their names.. it’s really coming together.

The class was smaller than usual because of the frosty weather conditions but the students remained eager to learn. I think the lesson being about geography helped spark their interest because it’s something that the learners have been around their whole lives and I’m sure have learned about in their country of origin.
