What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A nice class. One new learner, who was very crunched down and wanted explanations for everything. Ramin made a guest appearance and helped out later that was a real benefit. I used flash cards today in two ways – one was to have folks point to who, when, where, etc. another was to demo language from the test. I created a way to make it more engaging, but I’d like to find another way to make that rock even more. Citizenship test is useful and kind of interesting, but difficult to work with without just doing dictation after dictation. One learner seemed to be asking/hoping that we’d try something different in another class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Mary Louise did an incredible job managing a lot of complex variables. with 5 assistants and 4 learners, there were some inherent challenges. We worked with addresses quite a bit, identifying ordinal numbers, a dialogue about what’s my address, directional activity. A good amount of pronunciation work, and locating items on a map. Patrik forgot to update the website and get names, but we were both a little thrown off energy of the final exam. Great afterclass chat that lasted almost two hours going over what worked and what could have been improved.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

The class began and ended on time. The learners, MC and DJ each described aloud their previous night’s dinner, and gave several ingredients for the meal, while the other participants wrote down each food. At one point a conversation on eggs yielded new vocabulary; several preparation methods for them were discussed. A general idea of this summer’s English curriculum at the Rockwood library was given. The class voted on a recipe to be presented next week: Cucumber Salad with Tomatoes won.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was surprisingly small – around 6 people. And I went off the lesson plan completely and asked them about where they used English.. it was pretty great, despite the surprise turn of events – they told me that they often experience interpreters who don’t interpret what they say. And they talked about a bunch of other reasons why they want to take classes, and the barriers they experience. it was pretty awesome. But it so floored me that.. I forgot to take attendance!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was nice to have another person today, though as usual, I don’t like having to push as much as I did, and I was a little hurried, but it worked out ok. We did find an interesting unexplored corner of the bank thing, talking about check cashing and credit. For this group, I felt like At the Bank was not the best, most useful module.. for the most part, they didn’t have bank accounts and they are probably working mostly on a cash basis, but I’m not positive about that. Still, a good feeling in the group as we continued to work with numbers.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Wow, a great class, and a lot of people.. Folks were happy, they were having a good time, Lisa was working them with kitchen related vocabulary. 10 people is one of the largest classes we’ve had in the daytime for a long time! This was an observation for Lisa to complete her requirements for her TESL Certificate.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): a nice class, except for the fact that my back was hurting a lot. It was nice to do In the Kitchen with this group.. they are relatively higher level, so we can go a little further, but still “This is an Apple” activity was great and fun, as usual. Works like a charm. Because it was Cinco de Mayo, We did some language experience activities, and a little story dictation around that. Then, we had one of the learners tell us the recipe for her salsa – Salsa Entomatada!
