Date and Location of Class: July 14, Rockwood Library
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: noon-2 pm
MC: Patrik McDade
DJ: Jane McIver
Assistants: Wes Smith, Forrest Scrutton
Module: Dietary Restrictions
How Many Learners: 11
Score: 36 (Preparation: 3; Technique: 6; Engagement: 6; Connection: 7; poise: 7; Reflection: 7).
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):Jane introduced the echo song “Old Texas” and after dictation the group sang 2 verses. Following alphabet work and Yell and Spell, Wes answered questions from Patrik about his diabetes and the group recorded the answers as dictation. Wes then demonstrated his ability to take his own blood sugar without normal vision using a talking glucometer, and different parts of the glucometer kit were passed around the room, engaging everyone in the dialogue. This class enjoyed a lot of laughter and bonding, and it began and ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Bigger class today, w/ two new learners. We had role play and dictation about neighbors, and borrowing things, and later broke the class into two groups. We also had learners write down and say common phrases like: down the block, down the street, and across the hall.July 16, 2014 at 2:51 pm #3431David RutiezerSpectatorDate of Class: July 16, 2014

Score:6+8+8+8+8+8=46
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Nice big multicultural & multilevel group today. Dictation on driving directions from Rockwood to Central Library; choral response; introduced new vocab words like merge, slight, onto, and follow, that I demonstrated using different learners. Then we used phone books and split into several small teams of two or three learners; one person dictated addresses and the other wrote them down, and after five minutes, we’d stop and see which team wrote down the most addresses. This was really fun! Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and it was a great opportunity for students to applaud everyone’s final score and offer encouragement, which happened naturally! Then, I tried something else with directions: I gave everyone a card with a direction on it: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or NW. Then the learner had to get in the right part of the room. We used choral response and one-at-a-time response as well. Then, I said a direction and had everyone just point. Finally, I had a dictation using the song I Know Where I’m Going by the Judds. One new learner, Semen, seems to have significant visual and auditory limitations, and I thought learners were very helpful with him.July 21, 2014 at 12:49 pm #3531Ben Citalán MacarioSpectatorDate of Class: 07/18/14

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had one new learner, the class was pretty good, we had a good connection and engagement, there was no food but good laughs during the class, there is one learner that is coming twice to the class and is leaving early for the second time and I think it distracts the other learners and it might be uncomfortable for everybody. Most of the learners have pretty good writing. We finished on time but the time was fast.July 22, 2014 at 10:32 am #3535Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: July 21, Rockwood Library

Score: 44 (preparation: 7; technique: 7; engagement: 8; connection: 8; poise: 8; reflection: 6).
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began at 12:06 but ended on time. The class was unpredictable from start to finish. First came a discussion of each person’s dinner last night, which all learners wrote down as a dictation. Then followed Alphabet Listen and Point, during which a group of Chinese learners entered the classroom. After a fast yell and spell during which each person in the room spelled his/her first name rapidly, we heard from our special guest, Martha Munoz of Latino Network, who introduced us to Proposition 88, explaining it and urging us, along with our family and friends, to vote in favor of it this november. The learners pointed to words and phrases on a handout Martha distributed about Proposition 88, which would pass a state law allowing immigrants with unclear or pending documentation to get a driver’s card, permitting them to buy car insurance and to drive legally in this country, until they can procure a normal driver’s license. Enactment of this law would provide safer roads for all, and reduce the fear of arrest and deportation of refugees and the tearing apart of their families, simply because they are in the process of becoming legal U.S. residents. Patrik hopes to utilize more materials on different topics produced by latino Network in future ESL classes. The unity and diversity of this group, the way various races melded together to work as one solid unit, was truly astounding and felt by all alike. Much learning occurred and there was spontaneous laughter and wholesome joking. This was the best class I have yet attended.

Module: Talking with the Boss
How Many Learners: 7
Score:4+4+3+4+4+5=24
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started on time with 3 learners but grew to 7 by the middle of class. Vocabulary focused on the names of various household products: microwave, television, dining set… We then played a fun game of “The Price is Right” where learners guessed the prices of each item. We then practiced a script where they let a customer service rep know that something was a “rip-off”. All in all a fun class!July 22, 2014 at 9:41 pm #3538Robert GrubaughSpectatorDate of Class: 7/22/2014

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): An unexpected large class after the last few Tuesday nights! it was a good class with a wide array of learner levels and nationalities. It feels good to get back into the classroom after being off last week!July 23, 2014 at 4:59 pm #3540Brooke StadySpectatorDate of Class: 7/23/24

MC:David
DJ:Brooke
Assistants: Forrest, Lisa
Module: Maps/Addresses
How Many Learners:6
Score:45
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class! We started with Alphabet, did some work with ordinals and pronunciation of them. Then onto some dictation of directions which led into a fun improv listen/do/say activity using N, S, E,W. After this, the learners practiced speaking with each other around the room using general conversation questions written on strips of paper. Next we did a name spelling activity where learners spelled each others names rather than their own. After this, David dictated a few sentences about where he lives and then had two other learners talk about where they live while the others wrote it down. The whole class practiced speaking with these dialogues. With just a few minutes left, David brought out his ukelele and we all sang a short and sweet song (I forget the name of it, but it was very well received by all!)July 26, 2014 at 12:45 am #3575WebMaestrexKeymasterDate of Class: 7/25/14

Module: English for Civic Engagement (Citizenship Test)
How Many Learners: 6
Score: 6+6+5+7+6+7=37
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A nice class. One new learner, who was very crunched down and wanted explanations for everything. Ramin made a guest appearance and helped out later that was a real benefit. I used flash cards today in two ways – one was to have folks point to who, when, where, etc. another was to demo language from the test. I created a way to make it more engaging, but I’d like to find another way to make that rock even more. Citizenship test is useful and kind of interesting, but difficult to work with without just doing dictation after dictation. One learner seemed to be asking/hoping that we’d try something different in another class.July 29, 2014 at 8:28 am #3586KasPermissionarySpectatorDate of Class: 07/28/2014

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Colin’s day to teach without a prepared lesson plan. He felt the class went better than he had anticipated and I would agree. We began with the usual warm-ups and moved on to a listen and point with the deck of professions. After that we played “This is an Apple” and then did some dialogues and some pairing off and practicing of the dialogues. There was great group energy and team work. There was laughter and positive connectivity between learners. Learners were helping one another and connecting to support one another. It was focused and engaging. Colin did a great job -especially considering the challenge it is to teach without preparing first!July 30, 2014 at 3:15 pm #3590David RutiezerSpectatorDate of Class: July 30, 2014

MC: David
DJ: Quinton
Assistants: Forrest, Liz
Module: Maps & Addresses
How Many Learners: 14
Score: 6+7+7+7+6+9=42
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had 14 students, one DJ & 2 assistants, thankfully! We worked on using prepositional phrases to talk about where we live, then used a few stories about where we live- from assistants and learners- as dictations. We talked a little bit about locations on the map, and finished with a song, This Train, using the lyrics as vocabulary. We talked about prepositions using locations in the room (Liz is next to me/between/in front of/behind/ kiddie corner/across from/around the corner), and local landmarks (the house is across the street, the Italian restaurant is next door), but I’d like to use Liz’s suggestion even more next time, that is, to have students get up and actually move around the room more, to demonstrate these (men are across from women, I am kiddie-corner from Quinton, etc); this would also have helped with the energy level. Still, it was great to have a big class with new learners.August 3, 2014 at 2:18 pm #3622WebMaestrexKeymasterDate of Class: 7/28/14

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 2Total Score: 25
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Though this was one of my lower scoring classes, it wasn’t that bad. Ann came and surprised me, though it was really great to have her there. One learner’s anxiety and learning style makes her a little disruptive, but she was calming down with some attention and firm guidance. Also, because we are updating the website with new tools, I was nearly a week late with posting this reflection.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Several problems with this class.. one is the inherent challenge with the Citizenship Test. Again, it looks like the Russian speakers know everything about the test! So far, they nail it every time. Also this would have been a great class for Schoolhouse Rock The Preamble. Again, because I’m updating the website with new tools, there was a several day delay on this report.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A decent class, but a low score due to several things.. no plan, an assistant that I forgot was going to be there, Robert cancelled day of, almost lost the names of the learners, and Liz was pretty nervous (though she did great!). I just felt like I over did it a little bit, without much substance. One learner was very often befuddled and then another came late who was in a similar state; one of the learners was pretty advanced and had sort of a bored look, but she was helping her friends out. It was interesting to compare pets, though, which is what it turned into – Liz has lots of pets, we looked at pictures, etc. Also, it was very interesting to find out that some of our learners came from Community Works Project which skidded its way into my consciousness in several meetings.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began and ended on time. While learners were arriving we practiced Alphabet Listen and Point, then yell and Spell. Patrik presented various fruits (baby banana, baby lime, sweet lime, regular lime, pear, peach, grapes, cherries, guava, nectarine, orange, plantain, coconut, apple) and we all practiced the dialog: “This is an apple …”. Dictation was also involved. The learners worked well together, many helping each other. Much learning took place in this class.
