What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

The class began and ended on time. The learners, MC and DJ each described aloud their previous night’s dinner, and gave several ingredients for the meal, while the other participants wrote down each food. At one point a conversation on eggs yielded new vocabulary; several preparation methods for them were discussed. A general idea of this summer’s English curriculum at the Rockwood library was given. The class voted on a recipe to be presented next week: Cucumber Salad with Tomatoes won.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Used Tri-Met maps of the rail system to do a listen & point, & document search, leading into brainstorm and write names of towns and places around Portland, naming different transit centers and then streets. Then, we did a dictation about asking when a certain bus is coming. We told and wrote down how we got to Rockwood Library today. We talked briefly about: ’til and until. We played concentration using slips of paper with the names of different places around Portland, and finished! Then finished with a dictation and sing-along of Ella Jenkins’ version of Mary Mack, which contains some fun uses of language about trying to get somewhere, and asking for something, and watching others going somewhere.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

The class started at roughly 12:30 and ended at 2 p.m. The Dj and assistants arrived late due to getting lost and stuck in traffic. Ben entered into a discussion with the class of what they had for dinner last night. After Alphabet Sheets and Yell and Spell we discussed (and each learner wrote down) what all class members had for breakfast this morning, while thoroughly enjoying Tamara’s homemade carrot cake made with kiwi and mild chocolate. Everyone was engaged and learners and assistants worked seamlessly together for the good of the whole class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A late start as usual, but once all the learners arrived we got into our groove. Joshua had scripts prepared that dealt with workplace or interview questions. We had the learners write out the sentences and practice them around the room. We also filled out a job application.

What happened: Since there was one late arrival, the first Ss helped the second with the vocabulary, which went great, as did the pretty long dialogue. With only 2 students, we were able to go deeper into word meaning and other questions/confusions that they had. After an attempt to start a 20 questions game, Robert wisely abandoned it for BINGO instead, which worked perfectly, incorporating listening, re-writing and overall review of earlier vocabulary. Both students seemed to really enjoy it and it was a fun way to end the class.

We told stories about where we’re from, where we live and how long we’ve been here: it was great to hear different people’s stories. We named and pointed to stops on the MAX, did a street name brainstorm and played a place-name concentration.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Tonight went really well! The ratio of learners to assistants was near perfect.. 5 learners with 3 assistants plus Colin. Three out of the 5 learners were at a higher level, and the 2 lower levels were placed across from either an assistant or a higher level learner. So everyone had some one on one attention which was so helpful, especially during dialogues. Class started a tad late.. for whatever reason, most learners typically come in closer to 10 after 6. Wr did alphabet, yell n spell, introduced/reviewed names of professions using the profession deck, listen/find, a few dialoguers and ended with a fun TPR. Learners were engaged, and assistants were busy.. good stuff!

Brian Martin came from the City of Gresham. We worked on the survey they’re having, about transportation. I used it as a dictation and students asked a few questions. Each of us talked about how we got to the library today, and we used those as dictations, and said them aloud. We had a bridge name brainstorm and I brought pictures of all the major bridges in Portland; we wrote them down and said the names. Then we finished by writing and singing This Train.
