More participants and our lowest skill learner was just nailing it on the pronunciation-it was kind of amazing, it appears that the folks with higher communication skills have more trouble changing their behavior (ossification).

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Though the group was small, this was an amazing class one of the most productive and engaged that I’ve ever had. It was just two learners at first and we really dug into pronunciation. One learner was just asking what is that, what is that? It was great. We went into the lobby and used the pictures on the wall to identify workplace objects.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A small group, but a lot of amazing. Donna was awesome to have in the class, and she really intuitively gets a lot of the techniques we use. She’s a teacher! We learned that one of our learners is connected to one of our assistants; a learner who hung out with us a couple of years back came back, and another learner actually works at Bridgetown! Lots of laughing, maybe among the most good feeling classes I’ve ever had. There was a moment of complete cracking up. Really, really nice.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): hm! One of the highest scores I’ve given myself.. Nice large group, though we’re missing some regulars. Several new folks bogged it down a little bit, but still quite nice. Ivy pointed out that the hiking thing is a concept that’s not really available to most of our learners, and that working with “do you go to the park” actually makes a stronger connection. Worth thinking about whether or not it’s worth it to explore unfamiliar concepts, especially if they’re very common; or stick with more familiar concepts.WebMaestrexKeymasterLesson Title: What Do You Do on Line 5?

It was interesting to talk about the lunar calendar, and today we really started getting into details of what happens on their line. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today, more people! Two new Spanish speakers. Today I saw some of the lower skill folks, Vietnamese folks, really show some improvement; and some of the higher skill ones start to see how their habits will take some work to change. Still early, it takes time for folks to warm up. One of the Vietnamese speakers was really watching the clock, the work together ethic really needs to be built up. It would be great to have an assistant with this one. Did the same things, but took them a bit further, feeling a little bit of the hollow echo chamber feel you get when people’s brains/realities are changing.. but I think it will come around. Next week, more dictation.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not a bad class.. it took some work, but I won them over.. a couple folks ability were too high.. they can see that I know how to get into the nuts and bolts, and for the ones who speak pretty well, it’s tough to retrain. Difficulty, of course, with Z and G for Vietnamese speakers.. but they’re good and seem excited. Two of the folks who have the early shift were there, but needed to leave early. The rest of the folks were like.. can we do this in the afternoon, please? I will see if there’s room to shift that around.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was nice to see folks again.. small attendance at the beginning, but got up to a respectable size. All returnees, and several folks from before. A number of low skill folks who worked very hard. I felt like I did a lot of pushing today, more that I really liked, and I always feel like folks wince a little bit.. but then we come out of it on the other side, and people are laughing and working together.. Much respect to one learner who always reminds me of the indigenous languages in the classroom when I go around and say things in Spanish, Russian, etc.. There were Mixtec and Maya Kiche speakers in class today. Ivy and Barbara stuck around for a really nice debrief.

I was a couple of minutes late, of course, everyone almost was waiting, and then we cut off the class early for a meeting at 230. I felt today that it was starting to get a little routine for some folks. Didn’t feel it was my best class, and we didn’t bill for it.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A very nice class. The reflection was reduced by 3 because I posted late, and then somehow it didn’t catch, so I had to repost two days later. The class itself was very good. Normally apprentices are nervous about the Gentle Intervention, but Ramin was cool and collected. I did a little re-organizing of the lesson plan, which I don’t normally do for the gentle intervention, but the song choice to Frosty the Snowman was more in line with where we want to go – something that pulls from the cultural air that we’re breathing rather than something that has the appearance of being about the topic, but is really a disguise for a language learning activity. This is important because with all of our work we want to start from the real world and then use it for language learning, rather than starting from language skill and trying to create something that works for that. Ramin’s technique in general is excellent. A great feeling in the room.

A couple of people were late, and one left 15 minutes into the class, but the rest of the folks stayed. It feels like they are coming because they’re supposed to, not because they’re loving it. But we do see some progress with pronunciation. Today, we pointed at the bags of product, so that added new energy and excitement.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today, I laid out all of the deck of professions.. it took up both of the tables, put together. It was not the most effective arrangement, but I wanted to see how much space it would take up and what we could do with it. I also was very conscious to mix people up a lot, which was mostly really good. One learner who often has trouble really did well, laughing and giggling with a good placement of people. A couple of people left early. A good group.

Once again, staff was very awesome about letting us use the space, and this time we had some props. Frank was a little later, and one learner kind of skated out early. Looking forward to pictures of the line, and trying to figure out ways to point to the product. Spelling words out and having them write them down was very helpful, much more so than with other language groups who don’t have as difficult of a time hearing the letters.. they have to hear them several times, then write it down… then it comes together as a word, even for the higher skill folks. More useful for them than hitting the alphabet sheet to spell full words.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Tough day.. folks were distracted, and the activities really depended on them being able to work together, so the highest level folks were texting and not helping others, and when it came around to them, they weren’t paying attention so, they had to be coached. I tried to keep it sunny, but felt like I had to push a lot. I did an activity where they all had to memorize the names and spellings of various professions and that got them working together.. a couple of folks stayed pretty disengaged though.. a lot of writing though. I think being very selective about who is sitting with who, and even making high/low pairs could be productive at this point.. since the group is stabilizing a little bit.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was cold and windy, and veteran’s day.. honestly didn’t expect many people.. we did have a small class of five.. and it really got awkward at the beginning.. partly because I didn’t do the alphabet.. but jumped right into an activity looking at the home hazard sheet (which is really, so info dense, it’s challenging for anyone to read. A good example of bad information design). We did a lot of dictation and going around the room.. I tried to keep it relaxed but one of the learners, at least, seemed embarrassed and wanting to leave.. Another seemed .. not as happy and laughing as usual, though I haven’t seen her in a long time.. I felt too.. bossy in this class, at least at first, but it smoothed out a little later.
