What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was really nice having jacob there, and Yani and Barbara. I was struggling to find a way to show everyone pictures, we had jacob carry a book around with some of the animals.. we did practice language like – a beaver is a rodent, so we’re working on the classification, and we did a lot of pulling the words out in everyone else’s language. Didn’t quite get to the listen and do, technique not super inspired. Also had two folks come in quite late, causing us to redo names a couple of times.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with the alphabet sheet listen and point. As more people came in, we had to hunt down more chairs for everybody to use. Class went on as usual, no significant complications,. There was one new learner. The majority o the time was spent on writing and reciting a couple dialogues. The rest of the time was taken up by two listen and point activities using a map of Portland Neighborhoods and a menu for a nearby restaurant.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class began a few minutes late because the library did not have us on the schedule. Both conference rooms were in use, so we met in the small story time room. We worked on kitchen vocab and dialogued about what we ate for dinner. We used a recipe for document search. We ended with a fun game matching kitchen verbs with kitchen nouns. Maria brought Spanakopita to share with the class. Tonight was our largest class since stating back after the holiday break – 18 learners!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not a bad class.. folks came in a little late, not sure if they are kinda deciding to avoid the alphabet, or if it’s just the change in the season. Had a learner return from a while ago, it’s a little tough for him, but he can learn. Had Barbara and Ivy facilitate some of the activities while I tidied up the box and stuff. Worked with animals, great materials, I could have planned more to use it to the best effect.

We had four learners for most of the time but then came a new student (a nursing mother) who stayed for about 15 mins because she had to go. There was some laughter, learners showed enthusiasm by wanting to continue working on the dictation activity. The highlight was welcoming back a learner who had voluntarily left a class in the past and seeing him totally engaged and willing to interact.

Class went well, we had a better attendance this time including a two new learners. There was laughter and students were engaged. The beginners struggled a little but they were supported. Learners tackled dialogue that addressed the United Farm Workers movement and their symbols such as their flag. We listened to an on topic song and wrote down lyrics. We acted out action words like “pick” and “strike”. Students were enthusiastic and asked for copies of dialogue to take home and study.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well that was one of the highest scores I gave myself! A funny day.. all these assistants, but no learners there. Finally, a few trickled in.. we do think it’s probably because of Spring break. In the end, we had one on one interaction which is always nice, and had it geared towards the upcoming trip to the park. Though I won’t include a debrief of that here, we were worried when the cab wasn’t there, and then we only had 3 of the 5. But that was the minimum number of people to give a good sense of what it was like. and the almond clusters were amazing.

We used the invasive species.. lots of new folks, many lower skill, and also set up three tables with smaller groups.. Switched people around several times to find the right combination of people.. overall a decent feeling and good engagement with material, but it felt like it took a lot of work.

We talked about building a lesson plan around real world material, and about keeping the “This is an Apple” activity separate from the dictation part of it. She kept her cool and rocked the class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Gabby’s Gentle Intervention. It was a smaller class than normal, and we were a little surprised by not having an assistant, though we were notified about it. Gabby was very open to feedback, and the group was also pretty high skill. We went right around the alphabet and just gave them the native plants which proved interesting. Gabby also brought in soil and things to plant – we didn’t get to it, but that was a really good idea. While doing listen and point, we learned that one learner did landscaping, so we did an activity where we helped him talk about why he didn’t like landscaping.. and it challenged him. He realized that he’d been saying “laid down” instead of “laid off” and that didn’t really feel too good to realize that.. but he did appreciate it. Gabby and I chatted quite a bit afterwards, and she said that she saw that the activities were more flexible than she’d been thinking.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Interesting class. Though I had no plan prepared, we worked with the Native Plants sheet. Bess from volunteer services with the library was there. A nice group – there was a lot of multilingual cross talk – a Chinese speaking man and a Spanish speaking man were really working together. Lots of bubbling connection, and helping. A little friendly competition with listen and point. And we asked everyone if they wanted to take a trip to the Nadaka Nature Park – everyone said yes – we’ll see if that really indicates participation!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): So interesting! Last week was one of the best classes I’ve ever experienced. This week.. one of the more challenging. There were two main reasons. We had a learner who is very low skill and shy.. but she’s been around, she’s working on it, but it’s still a struggle – and she speaks Arabic. The other was that Alain, our new assistant – he’s still a little new, and his English needs a little brushing up, and to develop his facilitation habits. Very eager, helpful guy! The group was small, so the differences in the group make a bigger impact. People’s phones kept ringing and one learner left the class for 20 minutes. Another left early. And with Small Talk, it’s kind of these phrases like – what’s up? They seem pretty easy. I’m also always surprised though, that people do find them interesting to cover. One learner was like.. I’m so happy you go over these basic things, they never do that at Mt Hood.. she seemed truly appreciative and inspired. and her Spoken English is pretty good, too. Oh! also a familiar old friend came back! I almost forgot about her!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was an amazing class.. we had three people from MetroEast community media, and the County media person for immigrants and refugees – and of course, Barbara was there too, rock solid. Though it was awkward at times, we had a good size group, and we were able to get everyone’s hands on the cameras. I’m still working with hands on techniques for this kind of situation, and we had a lot of newcomers – and high profile ones, too, which had to be managed and given ad hoc training. But it was a great community connection space.. one of the library folks was like, oh.. it’s like advertising! I corrected her, no more like outreach and community engagement.. but essentially, she realized what we’re doing is not just about an English class, but bringing the real world to the learners. Looking forward to more and more and more like this!
