What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Ben taught a lesson revolved around outdoor activities we do in the summer. The learners came up with many creative activities on their own and we compiled a huge list of different activities you can do. We finished by writing down the 7 Wonders of Oregon and looking at them at a map and then watching a video which showed them all!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a big and lively class and moved into the larger room once we finished with the alphabet. Malee brought in strips of paper with different vegetables you would find at a farmers market and had all the learners choose three. We went around the room and practiced statements you would say at a farmers market, such as “do you have radishes for sale?” We watched a short video on farmers markets and finished up with a document search on ten tips for farmers markets. At the end of class, the students got to take home seed packets and everyone was very excited!

There was lots of lively talking and laughing throughout class. Malee was able to bring in lots of real life objects to pass around!

The class was very lively and everyone was chatting and asking questions during any time spent waiting. Luke finished the lesson by showing a song from the movie RENT, which had a lot of the keywords we had been learning throughout the lesson.

The learners were very engaged and helped each other lots and were eager to explain their own definitions of many new vocabulary words. We ended with a lightning speed game of the dialogue dictation, which left everyone laughing!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The cold weather resulted in a much smaller, more intimate class for Midland. We had a one to one ration of helpers and students and many high level learners. We compared different immigration stats in multiple states and used a map to reflect our data. The learners enjoyed drawing on the map and asked many geography questions. Maureen brought in cookies at the end of class, which left a smile on everyones face as they left !

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Marc and I had some miscommunication about who was MCing tonight so had to improvise a lesson pretty quick. We used the Recycling word cloud to dictate words and then had them turn it over and practice writing them down. We did multiple round robins about recycling and passed around a blue bin. Lots of learners asked questions about the meaning of “reduce”, “reuse” and “recycle”. Lots of laughter and lots of side talking which made the room energetic but a little hard to focus back in at times.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Two new learners came tonight! The class was very engaged and stuck with the lesson on ballot drop boxes until the very end! In the middle, Krysie had everyone get up and we all walked over to take a look at the ballot drop box. It was full of pretty high learners and there was lots of helping so things progressed smoothly and at a very good pace.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 2 new learners in today’s class and one learner returned after a long break! Everyone seemed to be tired in the beginning so had a little bit of a rough start but shortly after, learners were getting engaged and many asked clarifying questions or wanted to know more about the ballot measures and the language in the text. Patrik used his tablet to show small videos about the ballot measures to try and bring in a new medium for listening but the videos didn’t have sound.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): April from the Portland Fruit Tree Project came in to help out with a class on orchards! We had a huge group and lots of late arrivals so moved in to the bigger room and got a little bit of a late start but all the assistants agreed it was a much more productive environment once we moved. Everyone sat around three different tables so had their own group to work with. April brought in a fig tree and figs and lots of different tools and at the end, gave the students a chance to try the figs. Very large and lively group tonight! (**Note: I can’t find the attendance list- I must have left it in the box at Midland so will fill that in next week!)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Luke lead a class centered around election terms. Many students were curious about terms they did not know and asked for their meaning. A quarter of the class were new learners who are already at a somewhat advanced level so they assimilated quite easily.
