What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Luke lead a class centered around election terms. Many students were curious about terms they did not know and asked for their meaning. A quarter of the class were new learners who are already at a somewhat advanced level so they assimilated quite easily.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started a couple minutes late to wait for more people, but a lot of people came in about 10 minutes late. That put the class on hold while we rearranged the class. Once class started, we wrote down a few sentences, did a dialog, a document search, and listen and do.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): April from the Portland Fruit Tree Project came in to help out with a class on orchards! We had a huge group and lots of late arrivals so moved in to the bigger room and got a little bit of a late start but all the assistants agreed it was a much more productive environment once we moved. Everyone sat around three different tables so had their own group to work with. April brought in a fig tree and figs and lots of different tools and at the end, gave the students a chance to try the figs. Very large and lively group tonight! (**Note: I can’t find the attendance list- I must have left it in the box at Midland so will fill that in next week!)

In the middle, Krysie had everyone get up and we all walked over to take a look at the ballot drop box. It was full of pretty high learners and there was lots of helping so things progressed smoothly and at a very good pace.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A nice size class.. The group had come up with a good idea for a classroom layout, and I could have listened to them a little more.. their T shape idea was good.. I eventually followed their lead, but didn’t add the second table. Next time I will. Very familiar class, great feeling, and it was so cool to see a couple of folks who it’s been years since I’ve seen! And a couple of new people too. This group is not well-coordinated and would benefit from some consistency because of the size, but ultimately, it may well have paid off in terms of the general feeling of togetherness there.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):It was a good (and large) class with a wide range of skill levels. Maureen led us through Listen and Point and the yell and Spell drill. We did several dictation progressions, focusing on the winners of the statewide elections. We finished up with a Seek and Find with a sheet of the Oregon ballot issues. It was a good mix of finding things in bold titles, with a few challenging searches for words in denser text.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Marc and I had some miscommunication about who was MCing tonight so had to improvise a lesson pretty quick. We used the Recycling word cloud to dictate words and then had them turn it over and practice writing them down. We did multiple round robins about recycling and passed around a blue bin. Lots of learners asked questions about the meaning of “reduce”, “reuse” and “recycle”. Lots of laughter and lots of side talking which made the room energetic but a little hard to focus back in at times.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific
Mike dictated sentences having to do with how often certain elections are held. Many of the words were repeated from sentence to sentence and this aided in helping several low-level learners find success. One of the students was very interested in listening to me pronounce words that were similar to each other such as CAN and CAN’T. Mike facilitated a seek and find related to candidates, government processes and presidential races followed by two games of BINGO using buttons that the learners were excited about. A few students asked me and Ivy about the meanings of phrases such as “stump speech” and “soft money” that were on the BINGO cards. Several of the learners wanted to trade in their cards after the first game and joked about their unlucky cards. Fun class with inquisitive students!November 30, 2016 at 10:21 pm #8296Mike WatsonSpectatorLesson Title: The United States is a Nation of Immigrants

We then did a round robin and everyone identified the country where they came from. We did a dictation exercise with everyone’s country name. Then we played bingo with terms related to immigration.
