Lesson Title: Tornadoes hit the coast!
    Date of Class: 10/18/16
    Day of Class: Tuesday
    Time of Class: 2-3:30
    MC: Patrik M.
    DJ: Maureen R.
    Assistants: Tanya
    Module: Emergency Preparedness
    How Many Learners: 10
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): great!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

In place of the usual Yell & Spell, Patrik mixed it up with having the learners yell out the letters in their names quickly while students wrote them down. Patrik and Tanya dictated sentences having to do with the recent storms that hit the Oregon coast, other natural events such as lightning storms, hurricanes and tornadoes. The class repeated questions Round Robin style such as “Have you ever seen a tornado?” We learned about the different storms students have witnessed and were surprised by how many said that they had never seen lightning (they probably have :) ). Students got silly when answering questions about items in Patrik’s Emergency Kit such as a biohazard bag–they said yes to things that they probably have never used and made up stories to accompany their answers. The energy and camaraderie of the class was great!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): nice to see a large class at 2pm! people are starting to hear about it. It’s pretty cool too because it looks like it’s relatively higher skill learners coming, so we were able to go quite a bit deeper than we often can. This may suggest that we have a class from 12-130, 2-330, and 6-730? One learner came up and told me “excellent teacher” which is very nice. Great connection in the group, and good engagement. Some learners stepping up and really taking more of a leadership role.

The lesson focused on hazelnuts and facts about hazelnuts. We did a word document search with detailed information about hazelnuts. We also did dictation progression and round robin dialogue. Mike brought hazelnuts to pass around and eat, along with rice cakes and Nutella. Yum! We took a few minutes to stretch and point to various directions. The class was engaged and seemed to work together well.

Joseph facilitated a document search using the recent article pertaining to the gas leak and explosion in downtown Portland recently. Learners seemed to know about it and helped each other with meaning of terms such as “explosion” by miming with their hands and making explosion noises. Joseph had students write down short and long/complex sentences about gas and what to do in a natural gas event. Students worked together. As there were several higher-level learners, everyone got through very long sentences. Class concluded with a round robin which included smelling a very stinky piece of sulfur.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 2 new learners in today’s class and one learner returned after a long break! Everyone seemed to be tired in the beginning so had a little bit of a rough start but shortly after, learners were getting engaged and many asked clarifying questions or wanted to know more about the ballot measures and the language in the text. Patrik used his tablet to show small videos about the ballot measures to try and bring in a new medium for listening but the videos didn’t have sound.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a new learner today! The MC did an activity that had all the learners make their own bags out of old shirts. We had them write down a step of the instructions, do the step, and them write down another one. That took longer than we had expected but the learners had fun and practiced speaking. They worked really well together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Cheryl led the class in the alphabet sheets and the Yell and Spell name exercise. After dictating the title of the class, we found words and sentences on a Pomegranate Jelly recipe. This was followed by some dictation progression with several sentences. We had a round robin with pomegranates and some foods that contained them. We then did a crossword. She got everyone into action by having everyone stand and point toward different directions. Then we finished with a word cloud, having each student pick a word for the class to find. Everyone who wanted to had the chance to try some pomegranate-flavored chocolates.

It was loud and a little difficult to work the language angle, but ultimately a really exciting and unplanned development that may turn out to bring in further collaborations, and fits into our nature curriculum
