What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): this was Ariens first silence class, YEAH!! He planned an awesome plan, sent it to me prior, had a copy ready for me & met up with me a half n hour earlier to prepare on how he was hoping it to go. He had already picked out the letters & combinations.. Then he learned to sign some of them & I would yell them out. We then did our names & to then to the title of the lesson. Soon after he passed out a document which we did “word search”… He strategically did that & pre picked words that he wanted to use in the ” Hangman” game… But class got smart & started counting the number of letters to “guess” the word… But we stop using the words used in the document search…& rather picked random words from the document… Way fun… Students laughed & was competitive… Awesome!! Then we dictated 2 sentences & had them figure if true or false comparing from document… It was very well put together… I’m very proud of Arien…

The pointing to letters could be more specific & repetive with certain letters as you see need in each given class. The learners seems to be engaged especially when they get to speak about themselves. They liked going around asking what language do you speak? There was a whole bunch of laughter & connection…Monica Quintero-DeVlaeminckSpectatorLesson Title:”A bundle of belongings isn’t the only thing a refugee brings to his or her new country.”

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had a few slowly join us a bit late… a few that I haven’t seen before, but says they been there before. Barabara the volunteer left about 15 minutes early and arrived just as we were starting… so we didn’t really have time to talk to her about our expectations… she said she cam from the Hillsdale Branch Library to come see… that they have been referring their patrons to the Rockwood library but.. its too far for most… and the one in Hillsobor is far and not in their county…
being thta we had a big class… we stragetically placed ourselves to try to see everyone.. Mark & I learned that we make sure to get eye contact to make sure we aren’t loosing anyone. Today we talked about refugees that brought more than thier stuff… example.. Albert Einstein brought his genius knowledge of science to the US..(I learned something myself) It was a great opportunity to show them that we beleive that they too bring something of value to add to the US.Monica Quintero-DeVlaeminckSpectatorLesson Title:I have a food Allergy

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We started off a bit fast for some learners today…. The MC realized that the transitions need to work on a bit more… and slowly go into them, such as spelling the names, or write this down… The other realization is that this particular group really helps each other, such as Epitacia helping Janet… or Rosario helping Margarito… In the future moving the stronger learners next to ones that would benefit would be ideal. The MC stated that this reflection helps him learn on what to do better next time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
It started a bit fast… But learners caught on… Late arrivals were greeted & recognized and asked to spell their name. (Making them feel included) MC, moved certain learners around to strategically place higher level with lower level to help benefit them. Worked out nicely… Pictures from a newspaper were shown of certain refugees, it helped them grasp the idea. We had a dialogue where learners went around telling each other about a certain refugee… “Moti is from Bhutan. He lives with his family in Beaverton” thats an example
Then they did search for words in a document from IRCO, that they got to keep to have a resourceMonica Quintero-DeVlaeminckSpectatorLesson Title:Welcome to New Portland
