This class began around 12:08, due to waiting for learners to arrive. After warmup activities plus lesson title dictation Joshua tried a new true-false activity. A true-false sentence was handed out, one at a time, each on a separate page. Photos were shown to accompany some of the sentences, keeping the learners’ interest and adding a visual dimension. The learners were very engaged, thinking about each
sentence. They helped and encouraged each other.

This class began and ended on time. We had 1 new learner. During Alphabet Listen & Point, in addition to letters Jane practiced numbers with the learners. After Spell 5 and Yell & Spell Jane dictated the title of the lesson. She then dictated the story of attending camp as a child, wanting the insect badge, and earning it by correctly identifying various bugs the nature teacher found and showed her. Then Jane modeled with Ivy, who put plastic insects into Jane’s hand for her to feel since Jane is blind. Then each learner
got a turn. One learner would close her eyes and another would pass her the insect, showing her by feel different parts of the bug. Jane and assistants helped learners name the various parts of the insect. A round robin about going to camp followed and class ended with a TPR activity (stretching exercise). There was much laughter and camaraderie and the learners worked together, encouraging & helping each other.Lesson Title: Let’s shop around

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started on time with Alphabet, Listen and Point for the first half hour and it was good for low level learners to practice more the basics of spelling and at the same time challenge the higher ones by speeding up the pace at times. We acted out a casual dialog about the price of a toothpaste. It was an interesting class to teach because of the large number of learners and different cultures present. Some learners experienced difficulty with the dictation and the oral repetitions but there was plenty of assistance and positive reinforcement to provide them with.

This class began on time and ended a couple of minutes late, due to our rather buggy discussion. First came Alphabet Listen & Point, followed by a variation of Yell & Spell in which first and last names were spelled quickly. After dictation of lesson title (“Stop Bugging Me!”), we studied more insects on a handout. A round robin came next and we asked each other if we’d ever eaten an insect. Most people said no but Jane has actually eaten ants, bees, caterpillars and grasshoppers. She plans to bring some in next week if she can find them at the store. A great sense of camaraderie prevailed as assistants and learners worked together, encouraging each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was only 1 learner today, and he was pretty advanced so we kind of flew through the plan. Krysie came up with some extra activities on the fly, so that was great. First was the usual alphabet, yell n spell, lesson title, some short dialogue practice, and something new and interesting that Krysie tried which was the showing of a short video about the Oregon coast.. she had the learner write down the script and then did some choral repetition. It worked out really well! Then was a fun TPR activity where the learner had to locate an object (sand, branch, pinecones, ski goggles) in the room. Great way to get folks energy levels up! Also was a listen/find with a map of Oregon cities and counties. There was some time to spare at the end, so we did an LEA actvitiy with the learner and then had conversation about ghost towns, and ghosts in general. Pretty awesome!

This class began around 12:13 p.m., due to waiting for learners to arrive. After our normal warmup activities we had dictation & question & answer (round robin) followed by a W-7 tax form document search. Class ended with sentence scrambles, where the correctly spelled words of the sentences were presented in the wrong order & the learners figured out the correct order. Each learner took a turn writing the correct word order for one of the sentences on the board, great writing practice. The learners encouraged & helped each other, & there was much laughter & camaraderie. Class ended on time at 2 p.m.

This class began around 12:10, due to waiting for learners to arrive. Ben led Alphabet Listen & Point until Jane took charge with triplets, quads and confusable rhythms. After Yell & Spell dictation followed. We then searched a W-4 tax form and the learners located words and phrases on the document. Next came a tax word scramble, with all words relating to taxes. The learners laughed, helped and encouraged each other, and camaraderie was definitely established. After a numbers dictation and short physical exercise, class was dismissed on time.

Class began around 12:10, due to extra time needed to arrange the room and to instruct several first-time assistants. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell we had lesson title, numbers and sentence dictation. The sentences were included in a short video on military spending which we watched several times. Next came a document word search using a W4 tax form. Class ended on time with a short TPR (Total Physical Response, standing exercises).

This class began on time. Both assistants arrived early to set up the classroom. They discussed their role in the class with Jane and as a result the class went quite smoothly. We had one new learner. Two dictations each with a round robin question and answer followed the usual warmup activities (Alphabet Listen & Point, Spell 5, & Yell & Spell). Barbara & Ivy showed plant posters for a Listen & Point activity, greatly enjoyed by the learners. There was much laughter and enthusiasm. Jane attempted to show the Bosky Dell video but discovered after class that she had no Internet connection. She learned much from this experience. Jane improvised with another question and answer activity. Class ended at 1:55 with a short group of stretching exercises.

This class began at 10:07, due to late arrival of the learners. After Alphabet Listen & Point we proceeded to Yell & Spell using both first and last names. A variety of activities followed: round robin (practicing different responses to the question: “What’s your name again?”), counting practice, listen & do mimicking using an ATM machine, and further practice with large numbers by matching populations to their corresponding cities, states and countries. Class ended at 11:39 with the song sung by all: “Can’t Buy Me Love”. After class we discovered that the box of loyalty cards was missing. We had our normal blue box but the smaller box of cards was nowhere to be found.

This class began around 12:08 p.m., due to organizing of the classroom. We had 3 new learners. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell we had lesson title dictation, numbers dictation, then question and answer round robins related to the Federal budget. Class ended with a reminder about setting our clocks forward for Daylight Saving Time, and Joshua led a very energetic TPR (Total Physical Response). Class ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with about 5 learners, by the end there were 10- most came within the first 10-15 minutes. The usual mixed level, multi-lingual group, mostly Spanish speakers. Higher level learners were very helpful with others during dictation activities. Mark started with the lesson title, then a Beatles song, first a verse/line was played, then Mark repeated it, then learners wrote it down. This took a good 30 minutes. Then we moved on to the introduction of a w-2 form, first they were passed around using the ‘This is a” dialogue and then a dictation explaining what the form is, what its used for, etc.. We did a TPR to get the energy flowing and then ended with a listen/find with words on the form. Overall, good class for an especially dry module. It’s hard to make this one fun/interesting, but at least a few learners appeared to be interested in the topic.. and mark did a great job with presentation of the topic!

This class began and ended on time. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell we had dictation of the announcements (no class this Thursday, and last class at this site will be March 12). Tax return forms were passed out and the learners pointed to words called out by DJ. We all then stood in a circle for payment types listen & do (write a check, online, credit card and pay with cash). Money was passed out to everyone along with Walgreens ads. We found the price of milk and all counted our money silently. Then we practiced asking each other how much money we had in front of us and whether it was enough to buy the milk or not. None of us had enough money. There was great camaraderie among the learners, all of whom stayed afterwards talking among themselves for at least 20 minutes.
