I liked Krysies lesson plan. We had two students that left quickly because try thought they had a higher level of English. Sadly I didn’t know what to say at that moment. Also we had one learner who’s level was very slow. So I did my best to support her for a while and then she started to just writing and participate in class.

It was Julie S. First silent class. it was great, started of with utensils such as cutting board, cookie sheet, chop sticks, etc… had them say it, then work on “This is a ___ A what?! A___ Oh! A___” then had them right now each utensils that were brought, document search and listen and do. Great first day back for Julie and myself . Full of laugh and overall a great classApril 20, 2015 at 10:18 pm #5492QrysiSpectatorLesson Title: Out of the woods

Class started a few minutes late in hopes that more learners would show up, but in the end there was only three. We started facilitating the alphabet sheet and a few key words about Oregon geography. The rest of the time Ben had the learners write and repeat a few question about the NW and listen and do with a map of Oregon.April 27, 2015 at 9:43 pm #5514Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title: There are plenty of fish in the sea

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was only 1 learner today, and he was pretty advanced so we kind of flew through the plan. Krysie came up with some extra activities on the fly, so that was great. First was the usual alphabet, yell n spell, lesson title, some short dialogue practice, and something new and interesting that Krysie tried which was the showing of a short video about the Oregon coast.. she had the learner write down the script and then did some choral repetition. It worked out really well! Then was a fun TPR activity where the learner had to locate an object (sand, branch, pinecones, ski goggles) in the room. Great way to get folks energy levels up! Also was a listen/find with a map of Oregon cities and counties. There was some time to spare at the end, so we did an LEA actvitiy with the learner and then had conversation about ghost towns, and ghosts in general. Pretty awesome!

Did “this is a …” introducing more kitchen material. document search on a recipe and read recipe out loud. it was great although it was a small class everyone enjoyed their time.May 5, 2015 at 7:38 am #5550QrysiSpectatorLesson Title: Off the grid

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class started a few minutes late because we were waiting for learners to arrive. Ben started the class off with the alphabet sheet starting off slowly and switching to triplets. Once that was done, he came up with the title and an example. For the rest of the class, the learners wrote down all of the streets in the Alphabet District, and searched for different locations on a couple maps. At the end of the class, Ben played “Penny Lane” by The Beatles, and class ended on time.

Total Score: 35What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): this was a fun class with lots of conversation & engagement, and it was Gabby’s first silent class. She tried a new technique for silent alphabet with handmade flashcards. She grouped them (aei, bvp, jgy, etc) and would show the card and have Learners say the letter. She sped up to keep it challenging. Next she did “vocab/what’s this” by holding up a kitchen tool (wooden spoon, ice cream scoop), and see if people knew what it was called & wrote it down. We did “this is an apple” and challenged folks with “these are” tools. I was able to assist with teachable pronunciation moment with “ng” sound (straw vs strong). Toward the end of class a random question turned into a great higher level conversation about cooking & families & people even shared photos, etc. Everyone really enjoyed the class, great energy & connection.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was Julie’s no lesson plan and in my opinion all I can say is Great! We had three learners. They had a good time learning new words while doing dictation. Doing a lot of dictation really help them a lot to pronounce, hear and write. Julie brought some maps from downtown Portland.

Julie’s last observation class with Patrik. I may be missing a few things that Julie also did, but it was a great class and her last one with Patrik!May 27, 2015 at 7:06 pm #5623Julie ShannonSpectatorLesson Title: How would you like to pay?

Congrats Gabby on a great final observation class! It was another small class but there was good energy in the room. Gabby had people practice spelling their names quickly; vocabulary such as discount, sale, reduction, cash and credit; document search was creative with a few different activities based on a weekly ad from Freddies. First basic search, then she asked various questions about the ad like “do they sell a keyboard?” Or “what’s the most expensive patio set?” then she had folks pair up and make a shopping list with a $20 budget & report back to the group. It was a fun final class :)
