This class started and ended on time. After Alphabet Listen & Point we had Yell & Spell, followed by dictation and discussion of the term “maiden name”. We reviewed his/her name as well. The group then stood in a circle, each holding a card with an abbreviated direction written on it, and practiced directions. Learners threw a tennis ball while saying the direction they held. The final activity was division into 2 teams. Each team of 2 had 1 person reading addresses from a phone book which the other person wrote down. The learners encouraged & helped each other during all activities. A great sense of camaraderie has developed in this group.

This class began shortly after 12:05, due to organizing the room and arrival of several learners simultaneously. We had one new learner. Patrik attended & coached Joshua for his gentle intervention. After Alphabet Listen & Point, then yell & Spell US maps were given to each learner. All learners pointed to abbreviations as state names were called out. Dictation about the location of various national parks & monuments came next, & photos of these places were shown to the class. A festive atmosphere was created when one of the learners presented the class with pastries to commemorate the Chinese new Year. The learners wrote down the chorus of “This Land Is Your Land” & sang along with even more confidence than last week. This class ended on time.

Class began at 10:10 a.m. After Alphabet Listen & Point a new form of Yell & Spell was tried for the first time with this group. Each learner spelled his/her first and last name quickly. This activity proved very successful. Dictation and round robin followed. Then the learners were divided into 3 groups and asked to correct the word order of 3 scrambled sentences. This activity both engaged and challenged the learners, several of whom gave David positive feedback on it after class. We had one new learner today. This class ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class with a focus on spices! Learners were generally at a intermediate level besides one new learner who was at a very low level which made writing activities challenging. But, he had a lot of support from the learner next to him which was extremely helpful. They had a lot of opportunity to practice speaking, and we leaned a lot about a variety of spices; what they’re used for, what spices are used in what kinds of dishes, etc.. It was really cool that there was a nutrition class right before our class so the folks from that program left little fruit cups that they had prepared. Very fitting for todays theme of food/in the kitchen. No spices were used though ;)
We had a pretty good after class reflection but didn’t quite finish up since we had to leave by 8…Date and Location of Class: February 10, 2015

During Alphabet Listen & Point Jane challenged the group with triplets then 1 quad. After yell & Spell each learner named everyone else in the room. Since we had both male & female learners, we practiced “What’s his name?” & “What’s her name?” We had a round robin telephone call dialog. Our last activity was singing the song “I’m Alright.” This class ended on time.

This class began at 12:07 pm due to several learners arriving after noon simultaneously. We had 3 new learners, but one was new just to the Rockwood Library site. Joshua used this class to fulfill the requirement of teaching without a lesson plan. The activities were quite varied: Alphabet Listen & Point, yell & Spell, dictation, round robin, listen & Point to state names on a map, state name word scramble, & Direction Listen & Do. There was strong camaraderie in the class & the learners worked together to help each other. This class ended on time.

This class began at 10:10 due to the late arrival of the learners. We had 1 new learner today. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell much class time was spent helping learners with their pronunciation. Learners asked each other their names and also recited the names of everyone in the room. Jane led Spell 5 using words related to the telephone etiquette module. This class ended on time, with the learners very enthusiastic to return.

This class began at 10:05 a.m. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell we had dictation on the title of the lesson followed by a round robin on the dictation. One new learner attended. The camaraderie has been very strong in this class and many questions were brought up by the learners, who wanted to know the difference between various expressions they have heard, such as “Thanks” and “Thank you”. Next came another dialog which was first dictated, then modeled, then the learners practiced it in small groups. At times there was laughter among the learners, though they are very serious about their English practice. Class adjourned at 11:38.

Class began around 12:08 pm. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell, Joshua handed out maps of the U.S., one side having the state names, with state abbreviations on the other side. Learners pointed to states & we had dictation then round robin about states on the West Coast. Dictation of a dialog on their favorite state was followed by another round robin. Dictation of the chorus of the song “This Land Is Your Land” followed, with Jane and Joshua leading the learners in singing it. Class ended on time at 2 pm.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started just a few minutes after noon as we settled in and learners were arriving. At first there were only 3, and by the end there were 8! It was a typical multi-level, multi-lingual class. We started with alphabet and yell and spell then filled out loyalty cards. Next was “The title of todays lesson..”. This was pretty difficult for most, as literacy levels were pretty low for many of the learners. And although some learners understood the meaning, it took a while, along with the use of their L1, to get there. Thankfully, there was a lot of assistance for the lower levels between the MC, DJ, assistant and 2 very helpful learners in the class. Lots of team work! We then did some work with ordinals and addresses which proved to be great practice for all, especially with the ordinals. We did a listen/find with one of the handouts on wildlife that was sent by Ivy, and ended with a TPR activity. All in all, a great first class back! We learned a lot about the group, had a quick but thoughtful after class reflection, and came up with a good plan for the next class!

This class began at 10:15 due to Laura’s announcements. Alphabet
Listen and Point was followed by Yell and Spell. Dictation (the lesson title) came next, followed by choral response. The learners engaged in a round robin where they asked each other their phone numbers. Several learners then told what they did over the weekend. All learners wrote down each shared story. Choral response followed after each dictation. We had 1 new learner in attendance. The learners all helped and encouraged each other. Due to circumstances beyond our control, this class began at 10:30 and ended at 11:30. All participants are now apprised of the new class time (10-11:30) set by the school. We had 5 new learners. Most of the class time was spent welcoming the learners, having them spell their names, asking each other questions in round robin format, and having them take dictation. Then they asked each other about the dictation. All seemed to feel comfortable and indicated interest in returning on Thursday.

This class began and ended on time. After basic warmup activities the rest of the class time was spent dictating, then singing the Christmas carol “Silver Bells”. Some of the learners wished us Merry Christmas as they left and said they’d be back in the New Year.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started and ended on time, give or take a few on each end.. about half were there right at 1:30, the other half trickled in a few minutes late. We practiced our usual letters on alphabet listen/point/ Today was the first time I had them all sit at one table and it did feel a lot better. They were more engaged with each other and the more advanced learners were helpful with the lower levels. Since there were only 8, it didn’t feel too crowded and I was even able to sit with them some of the time which I love to do, rather than tower over them. I also encouraged them to try writing everything out before I wrote on the board, which was also useful. We did a name spelling activity but I had them ask each other to spell their names. SO ‘whats your name? Can you please spell it?. Great practice! The main focus was trying to get each of them to say what exactly what they do on the line in their specific role. Last week we did 3 of them; panner, delumper and oven operator so we got all the rest except one, the kettle operator because he wasn’t there and the others didn’t know exactly what his job entailed. It was a little rushed at the end and they didn’t get a ton of choral practice out of it but we got a lot of useful info to use in the future. I told them classes would start back up in January and they would be informed soon of the specifics. As they left, some of them told me ‘Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!’ it was really sweet :)

This class began and ended on time. We had two new learners. After our usual warmup activities including Spell 5 Patrik worked with the learners on confusable rhythms. Jane brought in a Nativity scene which lights up, snows and plays “O Holy Night”. The learners were intrigued by it and learned much vocabulary from it. We ended the class with dictation of, then singing “Silver Bells”. Most of the learners had never heard this song before.
