What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Everyone was on time for the most part.. A few trickled in a tad late.. Started with alphabet, again with a big focis on g/z s/x/h- played with 3 letters at a time which was a good challenge. Yell n spell was the usual. We used the same items as last week but did “these are” (heather got 2 of each). Great practice, tho they still had a tough time with it.. It was during this time that I realized how much difficulty they have pronouncing P, as in pans- many of them say ‘fans. So we did a quick activity where I worte pans and fans on the board and we practiced them for a couple minutes. Also Lienchi said Friends sounds like fans, and pens sounds like pans so we added that in there. Next we did a quick review of ‘what happens on line 2’ and their job titles. They were asked individually and then we pracited what’s his/her job. Lastly, we got started with specifics of their jobs ‘What does a panner do’? We only got thru 3 of them though.. Basically I had them tell me 1 thing they do, they worked really well together to come up with a good sentence, with my help. Then they wrote it down, it was written on the board and then we did choral practice, then round robin. Great class overall!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners were all mostly on time, a few trickled in a few minutes late but we started right on time. The group is starting to feel more cohesive- there’s one gentleman that doesn’t seem to be as interested, but definitely would benefit if he were more open to it. He’s not really disruptive but just hard to engage, and laughs at the others when they have trouble pronouncing something. Other than that, they are all a pleasure to work with, some of them very driven and motivated.
Today, we focused a lot on specific letters of the alphabet (g/z,x/s/h) then we did yell n spell… and then I spelled out some vocab words that they learned Tuesday with patrik.. this was a great segue into the next activity- review of ‘This is a’… I switched it up with the gloves (these are), which proved to be quite difficult so something to think of getting into next class.
We reviewd ‘what is your job very quickly, then practiced with “what’s his/her job” which was great practice with that grammar point as well as with saying eachothers job titles. Then we did a TPR with actions that they listed from last week regarding ‘what they do after they clock in’. That was great! Heather came in and talked about switching the classes around then we only had about 10 minutes left so we started the ‘what flavors of granola do you make’ but didn’t get very far with it.. I’ll bring that in next week and then do the listen/find with the actual packages of granola in the room. Would be great to eventually get some images of the machines they use, and.or other items they use on the line.Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: November 18, 2014

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began and ended on time. It was characterized by a lot of camaraderie, understanding and encouragement among the learners, who were very quick to help each other in a positive way. They are all going through the same hard experience of learning English, so all were willing to lend a helping hand to those who were struggling. We worked a lot on pronunciation; some of the learners pronounced “name” as “neigh”. We also shared with them the difference between “his” & “her”. David set up a table on which we placed real-world grocery items, which he divided into aisles: produce, paper goods, canned goods, and hot beverages (coffee and tea) and each aisle had a numbered sign in front of it. Jane would ask each learner which aisle a certain product was on and the learner answered in a complete sentence. Class ended with 3 announcements: today was the last Tuesday class for this year and Thursday will be the last class at East Gresham Elementary School in 2014. We did not forget to announce and invite all the learners to attend the November 28th potluck, and after class several learners expressed to Jane that they would really like to come. A great time was had by all in attendance.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): very nice class overall. Learners trickled in, with a total of 8 being there by about 20 after. Two gentlemen came in looking for the Intercambio that usually happens in the other room. One of them left – he was fluent in English. The other stayed- he was not a native speaker of English though I’m not sure what his native language was. His English was ok, but it seemed as though he could benefit from the class so we didn’t see it as a problem that he stayed. He ended up being somewhat disruptive but Ramin handled him pretty well. Besides that, the learners were engaged and interested in the activities. Class ended with a competitive document search which created much laughter.. great way to end!

This class began and ended on time. After our warmup activities Patrik introduced a round robin on texting. The learners asked each other if they text or not. A few do but many do not. We continued with Listen and Point on the phone tree. Announcements of no classes Thanksgiving Week plus a written flyer regarding our potluck on the 28th were given. Class ended with the learners writing down the first few lines of the song “Telephone Line” by the Electric Light Orchestra.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was the second class (my first) of the pilot we are doing with the folks at Bridgetown. It went pretty well.. learners were right on time, we started with alphabet with a focus on s/x/h/g/z . Then we did a name spelling activity, which was very helpful for me! Most of the class focused on having the learners talk about what they do at work (what happens on line 2, and what they do once they clock in). we wrote it all down, did choral response and individual practice. A little TPR too… I’m hoping to mix it up a bit for the next class as i felt like by the end, they were pretty tired of the same practice. But overall I think it was well received by all.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class began a few minutes late because we did not have any learners. Two learners eventually arrived. We also had one assistant from the library shadowing class. We did several Round Robin dialogues, and Listen and Do. Because of the small class size, the dialogues did not take long. We improvised with a dictation and choral response. Class ended on time.

This class began slightly late because we had to wait for use of the classroom. 2 brand new learners showed up, bringing today’s total to 11. The learners helped each other spontaneously during class activities and there was much positive laughter. Several questions were brought by the learners, mainly the differences between words like shopping and chopping, and a couple meanings of iron as opposed to the very different word item. In addition to the normal core activities we had a grocery store round robin after the lesson title dictation, and a shopping Listen and Do. Jane briefly demonstrated her use of the iBill, a machine which speaks the denomination of American paper currency. This class ended on time.

This class began and ended on time. We had an influx of new learners. Upon entering the classroom each learner shook hands with Jane and received a card with both a printed and a brailled number on it, which they kept for the remainder of the class. Calling on each learner by number greatly facilitated Jane’s leading of Yell & Spell. Jane assisted in leading dictation and modeling the Do You Text round robin. A Listen and Do regarding the telephone was added to our lesson plan, and the class heard a recording of the song “Telephone Lines” by the Electric Light Orchestra. There were several humorous moments during this class, particularly when Jane dictated a phone number superfast or spelled a long word like telephone very quickly. Sometimes the timing was perfect. Many of the learners plan to return next week for another telephone lesson.

Instead Jane gave a short dictation, introducing herself to the group. Yell & Spell 2 followed; due to the smallness of the group last names were spelled as well. Wash your hands dictation then listen and do were followed by questions about a sugar cookies recipe handout. There was much laughter and camaraderie among the learners, who eagerly helped each other.

This class began and ended on time. In addition to the usual lesson features (Alphabet Listen and Point, Yell and Spell, & lesson title dictation, as well as dictation of a few lines of the Measurements Song), a couple of new activities were added. Due to the presence of several new lower skilled learners the writing parts required more time than usual. After a question and answer dictation of several distances, we asked the learners to guess a few more, the furthest being the number of miles from Washington, DC to Moscow. We ended the class with a measurement terms scramble where the learners tried to figure out the mixed up words. The learners worked in groups, helping each other. This class began and ended on time. A variety of activities followed, despite the distractions of one learner’s children, use of a larger, unfamiliar classroom, and the frequent need to rethink activities due to the group’s skill level. The class was further complicated by the late arrival of several learners. Our activities included a song, dictation, and round robin, ruler listen and point, all teaching some aspect of measurement.
