What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a REALLY large class and not enough room. It was a very mixed level group, and there were several new students. 4 students arrived quite late, about 20 minutes into the lesson. We also went over the allotted class time by about 25 minutes.Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: october 13, 2014

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began and ended on time. This was perhaps the largest class I have ever attended. Learners working together made it succeed. There was much laughter as well. A variety of activities were enjoyed by all: dictation, round robin on “How tall are you?”, practice writing fractions and finding inches on a ruler. A great time was had by all.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): First day of the money module. Class didn’t start until 6:15- there was a mix up about the rooms, the group that was in our room didn’t leave until 6:15. Learners trickled in by 20 after.. regardless, we were able to have a pretty solid class with a good mix of listening, writing and speaking. Lots of laughing during the “this is a…” activity. Good group!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class began and ended on time. With so few learners, after Alphabet Listen and Point, we were able to speed up Yell and Spell, also incorporating individual last name spelling. Lesson title and fractions dictation were followed by Ruler Listen and Point, “How tall are you?” round robin, and dictation of the first 6 lines of “The Measurements Song”. A recording of the song was played. An enjoyable time was had by all.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
What happened was that I had to teach and I supposed to be an assistant. Coling didnt show up so I had to teach the class and it went pretty good, i had 2 new students and they really enjoyed the class. We focused a lot in people’s profetions, i created a story with one of the pictures: “the bus driver” and i did dictation, pronuntiation and writing and reading, then we played memory.Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title: Green Thumb

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Overall a pretty solid class, especially since neither the MC or DJ (who ended up having to teach last minute, and coordinated/taught together) didn’t have much time to plan. We pulled it together quite well I must say! We started off with the usual alphabet and yell n spell and then talked about the lesson title, which was “Green Thumb”. We found out that not very many people in the class have a green thumb. We explored the topic of Green Streets via a document search and then some dictation with related voacb words and their definitions. We then did a map/direction related TPR and ended class with an exploration of a map of the Gresham area. We made sure to point out the Rockwood library. Fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started just a couple minutes late, but most learners were right on time! I was very impressed since in my experience, in many classes, several leaners trickle in at least a few minutes late. We started with the alphabet, Jane and Wes took turns calling out letters and made it extra challenging by doing 4 letters in a row towards the end. After about 12-15 minutes, we went onto yell and spell. I was also impressed by the strong choral response of the learners yelling out the names. They are clearly a well trained group :) Next Jane had learners dictate the lesson title of the day and informed the learners that they would be learning (and then singing) the birthday song since it was Wes’s birthday. First there was a dictation, and then everyone sang! Next Jane wanted to see if we could learn the birthday song in other languages. We found that in Russian, they sing the birthday song in our language? Not sure if this was true or if there was just a misunderstanding on part of the Russian speakers when asked if they had a song in their language. But we for sure learned the song in Spanish! One of the learners sang it for us while Jane strummed the guitar. Pretty cool! After this was a dictation of names of nuts and then a short dictation about peanuts and almonds. We then passed around several different types of nuts and played with the “these are almonds” dialogue. Lots of laughter during this activity! We closed with a quick, short version of the peanut butter song and then Jane announced that there wouldn’t be class next Monday. Great group, fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with the usual warm ups of alphabet listen/point and name yell n spell. Next was a listen/find with the deck of professions that were printed out on big sheets of paper. Learners were mostly at an intermediate level and also have been working with these cards for a while now so most seemed to be at ease with this activity- still great listening practice, and review! Next was a dictation activity introducing the lesson titles of the day which were ‘Cool your jets,’ and ‘storm off’. There was a little discussion about the meaning of these phrases. Then Joshua had picked a card (the cashier) from the deck of professions to work with. First he asked some questions like ‘what’s her name, where does she work, how many customers does she see per day, etc..” and had the learners write the questions along with answers. He then brought in the phrases from the lesson title of the day and created a little dialogue between the cashier and a customer which was then practiced by the learners via a skit. Last was a review of the lesson title from last week via a short dialogue. Overall, great class with laughter and lots of engagement between learners!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class began and ended on time. After Alphabet listen and Point then yell and Spell, we worked with the lesson title, “A Tough nut to Crack”, first dictating then explaining it. A recipe from the Food Heroes calendar was dictated, then maureen Quinn, our special guest from OSU, dictated a short description of her nutrition program. The class ended with everyone participating in the “These Are Almonds” dialog. For this we used several bags of various nuts and seeds supplied by Maureen.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began and ended on time. While learners were arriving we practiced Alphabet Listen and Point, then yell and Spell. Patrik presented various fruits (baby banana, baby lime, sweet lime, regular lime, pear, peach, grapes, cherries, guava, nectarine, orange, plantain, coconut, apple) and we all practiced the dialog: “This is an apple …”. Dictation was also involved. The learners worked well together, many helping each other. Much learning took place in this class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class! We started with Alphabet, did some work with ordinals and pronunciation of them. Then onto some dictation of directions which led into a fun improv listen/do/say activity using N, S, E,W. After this, the learners practiced speaking with each other around the room using general conversation questions written on strips of paper. Next we did a name spelling activity where learners spelled each others names rather than their own. After this, David dictated a few sentences about where he lives and then had two other learners talk about where they live while the others wrote it down. The whole class practiced speaking with these dialogues. With just a few minutes left, David brought out his ukelele and we all sang a short and sweet song (I forget the name of it, but it was very well received by all!)Brooke StadySpectatorDate and Location of Class: July 21, Rockwood Library

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):This class began at 12:06 but ended on time. The class was unpredictable from start to finish. First came a discussion of each person’s dinner last night, which all learners wrote down as a dictation. Then followed Alphabet Listen and Point, during which a group of Chinese learners entered the classroom. After a fast yell and spell during which each person in the room spelled his/her first name rapidly, we heard from our special guest, Martha Munoz of Latino Network, who introduced us to Proposition 88, explaining it and urging us, along with our family and friends, to vote in favor of it this november. The learners pointed to words and phrases on a handout Martha distributed about Proposition 88, which would pass a state law allowing immigrants with unclear or pending documentation to get a driver’s card, permitting them to buy car insurance and to drive legally in this country, until they can procure a normal driver’s license. Enactment of this law would provide safer roads for all, and reduce the fear of arrest and deportation of refugees and the tearing apart of their families, simply because they are in the process of becoming legal U.S. residents. Patrik hopes to utilize more materials on different topics produced by latino Network in future ESL classes. The unity and diversity of this group, the way various races melded together to work as one solid unit, was truly astounding and felt by all alike. Much learning occurred and there was spontaneous laughter and wholesome joking. This was the best class I have yet attended.

Following alphabet work and Yell and Spell, Wes answered questions from Patrik about his diabetes and the group recorded the answers as dictation. Wes then demonstrated his ability to take his own blood sugar without normal vision using a talking glucometer, and different parts of the glucometer kit were passed around the room, engaging everyone in the dialogue. This class enjoyed a lot of laughter and bonding, and it began and ended on time.

The questions: do you have any allergies?, What are they? And What happens to you when you eat or drink —-? Were answered individually and the group wrote down the responses as a dictation. Patrik spoke words or phrases from the Food Restrictions document and the learners found and pointed to them. Various dietary restrictions were discussed and a video of the song “Grapefruit Diet” was played. This group of learners seems to be warming up to each other and a sense of camaraderie is developing.

After Alphabet Listen and Point then Yell and Spell Patrik passed a food item around so every learner identified it round robin style, followed by dictation from various nutrition labels. The class then watched the “Bread and Butter” video, wrote down the first verse, then sang it to Jane’s ukulele accompaniment. -
