Lesson Title: Keep your family safe
Date of Class: Oct 16, 2019
    Time of Class: 2:00 PM
    MC: AmandaAdventurousTraveler
DJ: MC Entered attendance, no DJ
    Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: Andres, Judy (library volunteer)
    Module: Healthy Homes
    How Many Learners: 14
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): We need more loyalty cards!!! ASAP!

    Self Evaluation

Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 8
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 8
    Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 8
    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 7
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 8

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a listen and point with an infographic on safety in the home. We then tried something a little different. There was a sheet with 4 photos of different home emergencies. Next to each one said “what happened” and “what could you do to stop it” or similar. Learners came up with the sentences about what happened and then we all wrote down the same sentences. I liked this because it challenged the higher level learners to create sentences, but still allowed for straight dictation for the lower level learners. Once we wrote all the answers down, we did a round robin: “What happened?” “He fell down the stairs!” “How could you keep it from happening?” “Keep the stairs clear.” This worked pretty well and I may try to do something similar in the future. This is such a consistent group of learners that they have all of the standard techniques down, which makes it easier to try out some new things mixed in with the standard ones!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): today I had two learners at about the same level, which worked really well. One had come from the Rockwood class – there she relies heavily on her friend at Rockwood to help her, and here she was forced/able to really push herself without a stronger english speaker to lean on. It was great! We did round robins with materials from trees (chestnut, bark, leaf/leaves, twig, branch). We then labeled a parts of a tree graphic (which added apple, flower, trunk, roots). We then played a memory game with images matched to words of tree parts (plus orchard, forest). All of these activities worked so well with this level of learner. At the end of class a woman came by to ask about it, and she is planning on joining us next week!

Date of Class: Oct 09, 2019

    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a listen and point on an info sheet with natural cleaning recipes. Then we did some round robins with white vinegar and baking soda. Then we did a bunch of say and do around cleaning the house – polish the furniture, fold the laundry, sweep the floor, vacuum the carpet, change the lightbulb, clean the windows. That was a fun and really active part of the class. We finished with a couple of dictation sentences and had people saying them one at a time as fast as they can, which caused lots of laughter. Fun class! Amber shadowed us from the carpenter’s union, and she is very motivated to introduce our learners to the apprenticeship opportunities. I would love to work with her to create a lesson around it, and maybe do a field trip to the training center???

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We dictated the NyQuil advertisement (nighttime sniffling, sneezing, coughing,…) – there were TONS of good and hard words to spell. We did a quick round robin with nyquil, and a word search of a visual advertisement. We then quickly invited folks to come pika watch with us on Friday!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was my first class all alone with 10 people – it was harder than I expected. I rely so heavily on having helpers to make the dictation go smoother, and to make for more lively round robins, etc. It felt a little less vibrant without other helpers! We looked at the PPS school calendar, wrote down my daughter’s freshman schedule and then round robined “What do you have 2nd period?” etc. Then round robined with different school supplies “Can I borrow a ______?”

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was Laura’s dress rehearsal, and she did a great job. We also had Jan, who is a brand new shadow. It was a fun class learning about pikas. We did sentence dictation about pikas, which we paired with images of pikas, talus slopes, etc and sounds of pikas short and long calls (which are adorable). We then watched a video about pikas and did some dictation from the video.

We then dictated questions asking about the letters (ex. How much of a raise did Melody ask for?) and then round robin-ed the questions. We then round-robin asked for a raise. We went through the material quickly, and used the remaining time dictating lines from Dolly Parton’s song “9 to 5.”

We did some dictation of sentences from the pamphlet, then listen and point using the pamphlet, then a round robin with pictures illustrating some of the actions from the pamphlet. This was a really cohesive lesson.

The plus side of having one learner is that she was able to really spend some time working on the dictation on her own, without the pressure of other faster writers.
