What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just one learner for a while, but two more peculated in. One student came to another one of the classes offered here, but she wanted to come to our classes because the other ones were “too advanced”. Group was really good at rolling with the language given to them and were easy to laugh.

One new person, but her kids were pretty rowdy, and it made it tough for her to participate. I took the group out into the library for this reason, and that was pretty successful.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We focused on insect pollinators. We went through some different kinds of pollinators, had a dictation about them, did a word search with related words, and a few round robins. Students seemed interested and engaged with the material and each other. The Spanish speakers and the Russian speakers exchanged translations for the pollinators, which was fun for them and cool to see that connection! Ramin was organized and poised and very helpful with the students.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners asked about the word hypocrisy, translated it on their phones and asked about how this manifested itself in the people who settled America. Giggled at the portraits of the stogy old white guys on the flashcards I had and passed around during Round Robin. This was a pretty high-level class, so I challenged them with a couple intricate sentences. There were three different languages spoken in the class of six learners of varied ages and personalities. They enjoyed coloring in the original colonies on blank U.S. maps I passed around. Very fun, very positive class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners wrote down and read out loud dictation about how to get a library card and find a book. Then everyone went into the stacks to select one English book, tell the class why they chose it, and read a sentence from it. Great energy and good engagement from nearly all learners!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Nick did a great job with his Dress Rehearsal! This was one of the biggest classes we’ve had at Rockwood in a long time–11 learners and five different native languages spoken!!! Nick dictated several sentences pertaining to his fourth of July itinerary which included food and beer. One of the sentences included “washed it down” and those learners who use their translators were tripping over this until we mimed drinking beer to wash down the food, to much laughter. The class had a lot of levels and people from all over the globe who wandered in after class started, but Nick kept his cool and was able to work one-on-one with most of the learners.

Learners were awesome with helping each other with spelling and words. We were a little unprepared but made it work well!
